Previous TR games were the perfect mix of puzzles, combat and exploration, TR 2013 is action all the way through; lara handles her bow like rambo, she has special executions if you get close to wounded enemies with a drawn weapon, she can drop from buildings/trees to stab enemies in the neck and she somehow manages to overpower and kill 2 fully armored men a ruskie and a undead samurai that are easily 4x her size, all while being hilariously whiny, up until a certain point, halfway through the game she gets a piece of shrapnel lodged in her stomach, but she still bulldozes a camp full of soldiers and climbs into a crashed airplane, only then she finally bothers to remove the shrapnel from her bellly, but the crazy bitch cauterizes the wound with a dirty piece of rebar and a lighter annoying and incompetent during cutscenes, her death scenes were ryona-tier (the very first possible death has a random mook stabbing lara from behind and dragging her corpse away to fuck it) and lara herself looked kinda asian and had a pear shaped butt with perky breasts, obviously this kind of game was cool in a year where everything else was a boring FPS with RPG elements/a walking simulator, but RoTTR and SoTTR are the exact same fucking game only with worse graphics and a protagonist that got uglier and uglier.

In short they couldn't market this game as a stronk female game because they'd get called out by Game journos for lying about it edging closer to the old Tomb Raider games.

Isn't this exactly what happened with the original Tomb Raider trilogy on the PSX? TR 1 was a smash hit on PC and Playstation - TR 2 did moderately well, and TR 3 ended up being shit on for being the same fucking thing over and over again. After that, TR was a running joke for TLR and Chronicles. AoD on the PS2 never really had a chance, even if it were a good game (which it wasn't). They had to put the series on ice before coming back with Anniversary and the Legends Trilogy.
Honestly, I don't think the franchise ever really recovered from the rapid-fire release of 1, 2, 3, TLR, Chronicles way back when - not like it could have anyhow - and the first chance to really reform the image of Tomb Raider (whether you like it or not, it was a clean break with a markedly different style), and they completely fuck it up.

It seems like game Publishers don't realize that annualizing every franchise is a bad idea. I can't think of anything outside of sports games that makes sense to release one of every year.
I wonder if it would be better if they did one big franchise game per generation? Or at least give a three to five year gap between each big game. That would give other games more breathing room and allow for experimentation with new IP. But I doubt the game industry will ever do such a thing.

I really hope the Hitman series does well. I don't play them, and don't really care about them all that much, but all the same - they seem like a really good example of a game series which cultured a die-hard fanbase that made the property valuable and greatly esteemed the developers. Then a larger publisher comes along and consumes them, churning out shitty sequels and fucking up the formula until they drive enough customers away that the behemoth regurgitates the company and property. If they go back to trying to make a good game that the fans want, and continues to be a success for IOI - then that's a… a proof of concept. A shining example of how actually appealing to your core fanbase by giving them what they want, rather than fucking it all up to make it HUGE with casuals, can be more profitable in the long-run. Not everything has to be lightning in a fucking bottle. Sometimes, just having something good that lasts is good enough.
Or I could just be talking out my ass, since I have no frame of reference as I don't play those games. They could all be garbage, and Square the best thing that ever happened to them, and the fanbase just likes shovel shit down their throats like a fat fecophiliac family at a turd buffet. But even so, if that's what the fans of the series want - if that's what they'll pay for, and have invested time and money and dedication into, then why not let them have the turd they want, in the series they've invested in?
