So, i wanted to get into SHMUPS lately, what are some good one to start? i'm trying Blue Wish Resurrection Plus and i'm liking it.

Also my first one was Shoot the Bullet because it didn't need the shift button that is in a weird position on my keyboard.

You're free to post as many 2hos as you like

Just play the Cotton series of games

fed058  No.15594535

Whatever the fuck you do don't fall for the original hardware meme. 200 bucks for UN Squadron is just retarded, especially when it lags to all fuck on SNES.

I can find very little on Google, can you please sell me on the serie. It would be really cool to see where to start, i'm all in for new shooters

Start with Fantastic Night Dreams on the Turbo Duo, then optionally Märchen Cotton Adventure 100% on the SNES, then Cotton 2 on the Saturn and lastly Cotton Boomerang.

also the music is really good

ZeroRanger was recently released and it's REALLY GOOD. The pixel art itself is just alright, but the cinematic presentation and manic pacing of the game completely elevates it to another level. The green-orange color palette works really well too on top of being very striking.

Gameplay-wise defeating each boss lets you pick between two upgrades, like side-shot/back-shot, homing laser/charge shot, and sword/drill which can hold off bullets. The stages are heavily designed around these abilities with enemies coming from every single direction and stage hazards blocking your path. The game is fairly generous with terrain/enemy collision as you have to get hit thrice in a row before you lose a life for good.

Scoring comes down to simply killing everything as fast possible and finding the secret medals, while speedkilling waves prompts bonus enemies to spawn which are worth twice as many points. It has a very generous extend rate so that even if you lose several lives, you still feel like you can make it to the next 1-up instead of having to reset after a single mistake.

I'd also go as far to say that you can actually get spoiled for ZeroRanger, as the experience wouldn't hit you as strong if you've already seen the full video on YouTube. Minor spoilers ahead:

The second loop is also fucking nuts in terms of how much effort went into it. New backgrounds, remixed music, enemies with more aggressive attacks on top of additional new enemy formations, and even additional boss phases. But the second loop can go full nuts from the start as you already have all your weapons from the first loop and really tests all tools at your disposal.

It's also great how the story (or perhaps presentation for lack of a better word given how the story relies more on visual storytelling instead of copious dialogue dumps) actually makes you want to keep playing through the second loop, instead of unceremoniously saying "IT WAS AN ILLUSION BY SATAN, DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN". If you want to get to the last stage of the second loop, you have to do it without using continues.

There's a free demo available if you want to try it out, I highly recommend it whether you're a scrub or eat 1cc's for breakfast:

Crimzon Clover is really great. I can't really say much more than that because it's just a really solid shmup in every way and doesn't build itself around any specific gimmicks.

41daef  No.15595251

Axeley was my first one, and I loved it wasn't very good at it, but I loved it. Perhaps Gradius or Ikaruga. Both very different types of shmups but good starting points.

Play Touhou.

Also I just noticed it but OP, shmup isn't an acronym you dipshit.

Look, there are other scrolling shooters, too. Some would say they are even better than Touhou.

I can only play Yagawa STGs these days. Everything else feels extremely dull.

Bakraid > Batrider > Garegga > Ibara > Muchi Muchi Pork > Pink Sweets

So, do you guys like STG Weekly? I find it interesting and helpful but I rarely can stomach one and a half hours of pure 1cc autism. Would love to though

You can also try the x68000 version as it's considered an upgraded version of the arcade one.

It's freeware for DOS, you can get it off your abandonware site or from GOG (for free). The game has a health- and shield bard, and you can use your score to buy upgrades for your ship in between missions. There is also an arcade mode where you pick up upgrades along the way instead of buying them. You can control the game using the keyboard, a joystick or using the mouse (best method).

Health bar, hands down. With one-hit death I feel like I'm not really fighting but playing through a puzzle. Or at least do it like Contra and respawn me where I just died. Or at the very least allow me to touch the walls, I hat it when I barely touch a pixel of the wall and explode instantly.

Another shitty CAVE game with an afterthought of a scoring system completely divorced from the rest of the game's mechanics.

>>15597753

Bakraid can never be better than Garegga and Batrider if nothing else because of it's incredibly boring soundtrack.

a8a1f0  No.15610228

>>15595251

Ikaruga is a terrible starting point for the genre. It's a very static puzzle game masquerading as a shooter and most skills you pick up playing it won't apply to others.
