The first two are similar and are very good games. The third goes in a different direction but is still comparable to the first two. The fourth is a lot more action shootery but its okay and if you played the first three then you might as well finish the story. I remember MGS being kinda short even though it has two discs but you go from challenge to challenge back-to-back and its a frantic pace because of it.

Also, it's the logical thing to do. Playing games in order of story is retarded since franchises tend to retcon themselves with new entries and prequels tend to have little nods to earlier release games with references that will be lost of a player if they didn't play the earlier games.

one of the few games where "it aged like milk" applies. It's not entirely its fault tbh, a lot of the charm was discovering secrets and easter eggs in a pre-internet society (yeah there was internet at the time but everybody got their game news via paper magazines). It's very basic gameplay wise

overrated thanks to the 2deep4u story. Gameplay wise is more fun than the 1 but there's more backtracking (and there was a lot of it in MGS 1), level design leaves a lot to be desired and you're constantly stopped by cinematics/codec calls

>MGS 3

genuinely good but you have to get used to its quirks in terms of controls and mechanics. It's maybe the first MGS that can qualify as a real stealth experience (less arcadey, no radar, sound and visibility matters), it also offers very creative ways to get past enemies. Cutscene to gameplay ratio is well balanced and the codec calls are very fun. Story is cheesier but not in a bad way

very good gameplay in the first 2 acts, then it becomes utter shit. Prepare for several long cutscenes. When people joke about 4 being a movie, they aren't joking that much. The worst in the mainline solid games

Ground Zeroes is fantastic even if it's just a level. The Phantom Pain was a letdown. Very repetitive, lackluster level design, too easy. Absent and nonsensical story. Open-world destroyed the game. Good things are freedom of playstyle, replayability due to the previous point, lots of mods for PC.

Here I can agree, definitely play Snake Eater over the original release, same with Substitute over Sons of Liberty.

Still holds the record for longest series of cutscenes and longest cutscene in all of gaming, I've yet to play it but I'm looking forward to emulating it in a few years.

Pretty much encapsulates what's wrong with 98.6% of the Metal Gear fanbase.

Anyway, here's what you really need to play, in order:

MG1 MSX, the original

MG1 NES, dummied down a little but iconic soundtrack, also important for what's next…

Snake's Revenge, not terrible, but Kojima thought he could do better and asked for a shot, leading to…

MG2 MSX, which is not-skippable; then…

MGS1-5, in order. Then maybe finish it off with…

MG1 (again)

Don't bother with any of the other shit, it's not important.

Play MGS 1, 2, 3 and GZ, don't bother with the rest.

PW isn't bad at all, but the campaign is really short, the meat of the game is in all those bonus missions you unlock by S ranking story missions, they're more or less the same except bosses now have 10 times the amount of health so you really need a friend to get through them, there's also the few stealth missions that require you to completely ghost through enemies, the monster hunter fights, the boss rematches and those stupid date missions.

Still, it is worth to play it at least once just to see a 50-something year old man, who sounds and looks like a pirate, fight gigantic mechas with vocaloid voices using a shitty rocket launcher while girly j-pop plays in the background.
