Overload was released this year is the best FPS released in the past decade, and is SEVERELY underrated. Everyone who likes first-person shooters or has played Descent needs to try this. I can not stop shilling it enough. For starters:
>is shockingly well-optimized for an Unity game with plenty of graphical options to boot, in developer streams they said they basically had to rewrite Unity's rendering code to get better performance (it won't run on your Pentium 4 toaster because it's still fucking Unity though)
>programmed by the actual creators of Descent and it shows, the ship handling feels incredibly smooth and responsive, while movement techniques such as tri-chording, afterburn boosting, and immelman turns are still present
>ACTUAL GOOD FUCKING HAND-MADE NON-LINEAR FULL 3D LEVEL DESIGN AND A MINIMUM OF TEN SECRETS FOR EACH LEVEL, with 15 30-minute sized levels, all of which are excellent and challenging to navigate as one fully utilizing your spatial awareness, as one should expect in a 6DoF game, see automap in pic related
>sizeable varied enemy roster of enemies with different roles and behaviors, on top of Super variants which give existing bots different more dangerous weapons which can change how they function, like the dumbfire rocket launching bot gets homing missiles and the stealthy creeping melee enemy gets a fucking cloak
>the AI is really good, they can dodge your shots to a reasonable extent without feeling bullshit, on top of being able to lead their shots so you can't just fly circles around them and never get hit, you have to mix up how you move
>the AI can even react to your headlights being on or flares being shot around corners, though you can use this to lure them out as well
>enemy types have distinct behaviors, some will hide around corners to ambush you, some will perform hit 'n run attacks, some will just stay away from you as far as possible, while others will charge you head on
>the hit 'n run enemies are especially used in large and dark non-linear cavern areas, they thankfully don't deal a lot of damage but they're right bastards
>your melee attack involves ramming into enemies directly which briefly stuns them and gives you a little health back, which is fucking cool
>your shots also apply physical push force, so if you shoot a bot's sides instead of his center you can actually push it away and throw off it's aim
>you get eight weapons and eight secondary missile types, each of which are distinctly different and feel satisfying to use, and are also well balanced
>the soundtrack is done by the composers who worked on Descent 1, 2 and 3 respectively, each adding their own unique flavor to the OST and doing it quite well
>the sound mix is well done as you can at least hear what's going on in the other 240 degrees around you
>graphically it looks quite decent with a lot of satisfying visual effects and distinct enemy visuals
>the dynamic lighting looks really nice which it should considering you spend a lot of times in large and dark caves
>new game+ remixes all the levels to include more tougher enemy types and endgame enemies into even the earlier levels
>difficult but fair, Insane+ gives you only 5HP per shield orb instead of the usual 5/10 and even disables mid-level saving, but still manages to never feel like bullshit
>arena-like lockdown ambushes and secret levels where you have to kill X amount of quickly spawning enemies before time runs out add some bits of variety
>the upgrade system is actually quite well realized as it works like augs in Deus Ex where picking one option for a weapon upgrade locks the other one out, so you can't have just everything
>comes with a fully functional multiplayer mode
>and a level editor, in fact there's a community-made level pack DLC out for it already
>story is actually rather intriguing, but is unobtrusive and can practically be disabled entirely
<the boss fights are kind of lame, they're not frustrating but you can cheese them out fairly easily with power-ups or some of the most powerful missiles
<multiplayer is matchmaking only and largely inactive, you'll have to get a match going on the game dicksword and hope you're not playing against some Descent veteran with 20 years of experience
<a little too much of the secrets are just feeling on walls for secret doors which hold a single secret missile pick-up (the hidden door textures are noticeable if you know what to look for), I wish there were more switch puzzles
<I wish there were more levels where the exit is further away from the reactor, escaping a level with only 3 seconds on the self-destruct timer felt tense and rewarding as shit
I'd post a magnet link if I could actually find a torrent of the latest version with the community level pack, which is also quite nice as it was largely made by people who had experience making custom Descent missions for many years (though the first one is kind of shit)
