Nintendo always suck shit with fan games, but as a general rule of thumb for most companies:

For example, Pokemon is an OK RPG that falls apart when you look at how the mechanics work. You could make a comfy rpg with simple combat, or make the combat tactically deeper (rather than just having wider options). Monster catching RPGs are always hard to do as nearly everything the game can throw at them, the player will also have the potential to access. It's like with a TCG- a dominant strategy can form with "the best" creatures.

Speaking of, I know Pokemon Sage was using Essentials as their engine, so does this mean they're fucked? Those guys were cucks anyway. Good designs tho.

Even small changes to the gameplay make a massive difference to Pokemon and make it deeper (bigger stat-boosts/nerfs but they degrade 1 stage every turn, include 5th and 6th moves in the form of Protect and Dodge, less micromanaging with natures and IVs or provide an easier way to manipulate them). Even World of Final Fantasy did something different with the monster catching forumla with it's dumb towers and ATB system.

Truth is, Pokemon fan games are easy to get attention for (large audience already exists) and easy to make (turn-based combat, no timing elements needed for puzzles, 2D sprites). If you wanted to make a video-game and get attention, it's a great way to "cheat". The alternative is not just learning to make a video game where things are not turn-based or on a grid (which leads to clipping, getting stuck in the geometry, and more complications), but making new assets (possibly even in 3D!)

Learning to code AND be an artist/modeler is intimidating. So you end up with fan games of 2D rpgs, or SJW hipster walking simulators with fake pixel art in an awful art-style (because the creator cannot draw or make & rig a 3D model). Hell when I've thought of making games, most of them were fan-games of existing properties to get more attention on it, even if the assets would be original.

I understand where you are coming from. Unless you have movement as a mechanic like Tactics Ogre or Fire Emblem, it does boil down to the economy of your turns. How much damage you can inflict while not dying. With the exception of games where you have limited healing (once per battle), everything is a variation on trying to maximize the number of turns you spend dealing damage. Buff up a character to score more crits, make the other guy suffer DOT then use attacks that deal extra damage to targets suffering DOT, or just wailing on the fucker with your most damaging attacks.

Pokemon has lots of different options to deal damage, but they all pale in comparison to either "Use the best Pokemon and keep hitting them hard" or "buff up this powerful Pokemon and keep hitting them hard", mixed in with stuff to hinder the foe like lowering their attack or boosting your speed. In other RPGs, you at least have more viable options on how you deal damage, and enemies can hit a hell of a lot harder since there's no competitive scene it has to work for.

Since fucking when? The top of the VGC roster for usage has been heavy hitters or self buffers for ages. Weather gets some usage since it makes shit stronger or faster, but I don't remember seeing entry hazards for a long time. Hell I don't think I've even seen Will-O-Wisp or Thunder Wave for a year or two. Everything gets cock-slapped by Landerus or one of the top 10, while the top 20 support it.

And stuff like Mega Necrozma would have been ideal as bosses. All they need to do is make Gym Leaders & bosses have their ace be above the level curve. Maybe even lock you into the gym until you beat the leader or black out and have to start again. You can't give your enemies the same tools the player has or its dull. The enemies need to have better tools, so the player has to play smarter.

i mean, my "smash fangame" idea would have replaced the second jump button with an "extra button" that when held with the special (B) button produces different versions of special attacks. Kinda like custom moves, but instead of choosing a customization you just use different inputs.

Just make your own IP, you idiot. Ideas are easy. The coding, art, assets, everything else is the hard part. Make a collectable monster game and call it something else. The mechanics can be identical and they won't be able to touch you, because you can't copyright game mechanics.

The only reason to call it "Pokemon" is:

1. You love the game that much and want to show that, in which case you follow the previous advice in this thread and release it quietly and anonymously, and don't play it up like a retard.

2. You don't think you can get as much attention with your own IP, in which case, you are admittedly trying to profit by using somebody else's property. You are lazy, trying to benefit from work somebody else has done to make the name recognizable.

3. You can't come up with original ideas, which also falls under the last category. Don't use a popular IP. Find some shitty ideaguy to do that for you; there are shitloads of them here alone. Most of them suck, but there are a couple good ones that crop up here and there in the "post your game idea" threads.

If you are using somebody else's copyright, you know you are working on shaky ground. These games aren't in the public domain. Sure, you can say Nintendo is shitty for doing this (and people always come in with the "if they don't defend it they lose it" excuse, but that applies to trademarks, not copyright. You don't have to defend copyright to keep it.), but you know that you are working in a legal and moral grey area, and for very modest benefit at best. Maybe Nintendo is shit, but if you were talking up a fan game and got shut down, you are stupid, regardless of whether or not Nintendo is shit. If you really want to do a fan game to show your love, follow scenario 1 above, otherwise you're begging for it.
