Remember when some Star Citizen offshoots were kickstarting a spiritual multiplayer-focused successor to the Descent series called Descent: Underground? Now they're slapping on an actual singleplayer campaign onto it, and are just calling it Descent (2019) instead. They've released a story trailer where the reboot is just about miner wars instead of destroying robots taken over by a virus, and a gameplay trailer can be seen in embed related, which looks janky as fuck, shit music, UI and framerate included. At 0:06 you can even see "Objective text goes here" in the top right corner under all the objectives. Multiplayer will be about classes with skill tree upgrades and shit.

This is inevitably going to get compared to Overload, which is a spiritual successor to Descent by the actual original Descent developers released this year, and even at a glance looks better in every way compared to what they've shown here. It'll probably worse better than Overload too, which is doubly ironic considering Overload runs on Unity (but is incredibly well optimized for an Unity game).

Also Overload is the best FPS released in a decade, go fucking play it

>that framerate

Made it 13 seconds in, completely unwatchable. Why would they willingly release that footage to the public?

So they can live on patreonbux for years and never have to release anything

This shit pisses me off so much, by using the same name as the original game they make it impossible to search for the old one. This is 100% on purpose.

Unity is a decent engine, but since you can develop your game with it without having to pay royalties (last time I checked you only have to start paying once your revenue exceeds a certain limit), every idiot and their grandmother has hopped on the bandwagon and just slaps some shit together with no regards to quality.

DEAD ON ARRIVAL:

>Eric Peterson1 week ago (edited)

>We love Overload, and their creation of the original inspired us to make this, unfortunatly there was some fight long before we started this where they broke with Interplay, and each party owns so many pieces of the title that when we started we couldn't use the old assets, so the choice was made to reboot the franchise with an all new origin story - which is what this is - we are sort of doing what Star Trek did in reimagining the game as an all new product - and as such it was decided to call it simply Descent and then the year. Hopefully folks will like it, and try out Overload too - those guys are good developers and along with us and a few others are trying to resurrect an entire genre…….so Descent (2018) made the most sense.

>Avatars and garages are planned for future releases as we build upon the story and move Descent forward with DLC and subsequent story releases.

There isn't anything inherently wrong with Unity, other than that it is licensed, and it's a great way to distribute a game across all operating systems easily. It's almost as if people who are bad at developing games make poorly optimized games.

Crowdfunded = shit.

The current IP holders must feel awfully threatened by Overload to be making bold moves like this. I think probably every one of Descent's small but dedicated fanbase is well aware that Overload is the actual continuation of Descent.

Wasn't Overload crowdfunded?

It was. They also started the Kickstarter much later than D:U and released a polished full version after an Early Access phase which went off without a hitch, while the D:U team went silent (up until now).

If these are successful, what's the chance at a Terminal Velocity 2/Remake?

I still have vivid memories of playing the shareware version and not knowing where the fuck to go (I was like six).
