Also you don't seem to realize that 333 would never be a valid number sequence in an IP address and thus makes for a poor example. The range of a number is 0-255. If you want to use your example, do 00.11.22.33 or 001.002.003.004 or the more sensible w.x.y.z. The only IP addresses that can use a 333 as a value are IPv6 IP addresses. Minecraft doesn't do IPv6, and no one fucking uses it anyway.

Because Minetest isn't developed to compete with Minecraft, it's developed as a "modding engine" and the thought process is "mods will fix everything", except they don't as they are dramatically worse and the modding community is a small speck compared to Minecraft's in terms of competence, productivity and collaboration. The game dramatically lacks mobs and combat and any mod regarding those is shit, plus there aren't good modpacks like Minecraft has. The engine seems to perform better, but the only real advantage other than that is infinite Y axis (endless sky, endless caves) and support for fancy custom sloped blocks. Here's a question, why hasn't any mod try to tackle volumetric fluid?

I was just thinking about this, there was one or two minecraft mods that attempted it but in a terribly inefficient way, where water slices could potentially be left sliding around on land forever.

I was thinking of how depleting water bodies could work, and I thought if you took some quantity of water from a lake or something, it would do one sweeping calculation on how many water blocks are connected by the horizontal, then subtract a float value from each water block in that layer that determines how 'full' the block appears, eliminating the need to actually create or destroy a water source block in a body of water. I guess it would be tricky for extremely large bodies of water, maybe for every adjacent block of water it would have to decrease the float value by 1/(x blocks)? Then if there is a water block with an air block adjacent to it, it creates a new fluid block and performs the same calculation subtracting another 1/(x blocks). Transporting fluid may be a huge issue, like if a player places down some bucketed fluid, I can already imagine it would create a ridiculous number of fluid blocks adjacent that would either spread paper thin across a flat plane or reach a hole to settle in… Assuming a fluid block placed from a bucket would have a float value of 1 to display a full block height, and the check for air blocks adjacent would create new fluid blocks and update their 'fullness' by subtracting 1/(x blocks) in the group, would it ever really reach a value of 0?

Maybe I'll actually load up minetest again and see if I can implement that. I've already mostly laid out the logic for it, except for cases when fluid blocks encounter full/non-full fluid blocks beneath their layer and what happens when there's air beneath the fluid block.

Might be an issue for checking air blocks below fluids, might have to do something like prevent falling or propagating downwards and create a 'stream' node between fluid and ground, then create a fluid layer below that and decrement the topmost fluid layer's fullness value until the new fluid layer reaches max fill. Shit this is getting complex.

So, I think the entire update check would have to run something like this:

After worldgen, you'd consider unloaded blocks as a solid boundary for fluids and physics purposes, with some checks to make things resume proper behaviour when the blocks are loaded.

Ideally you'd want the render distance to be a tad shorter than the loading distance, to keep the transition seamless.

It took me a while to figure out how to make a fluid block with a non-standard height, and it has some interesting graphical issues because technically it's defined as a 'flowingliquid' in drawtype, which means it renders it as the sloped water that extends from a source.

Single rows of the block do not render at all, a row has to be at least 2 blocks wide to render because of it's "slope".

This was the only way to set how tall the water block is, I could technically set the drawtype to nodebox and adjust the height that way, but that creates more problems, because that changes not just how it's rendered but also the hitbox of said node, which the flowingliquid drawtype does anyway, but I think that it also changes the visibility factor, like if the player is submerged in the fluid blocks they cannot see through them as they're not transparent.

As I was afraid, setting drawtype to nodebox causes the block to loose transparency. Also cannot seem to get the height of the nodebox geometry to go below 50% so it's stuck at being slab height.

Nodebox is defined as {x1, y1, z1, x2, y2, z2} where y2 is vertical height and default value is 0.5, making the value larger makes it go above the 1 block height, lower makes it slab height.

Ah, so y1 also determines the height, but inversely to y2. So if y2 is set to 0.0 then it makes a half block, but that's extending from the vertical center, same with y1, so if you reduce y1 to -0.05 it reduces the block size from the center down, leaving a carpet thin block that hovers above the ground.

Here we go, got the node box to a carpet thin layer that orients downward. I think it had to do with setting the second paramtype to 'facedir' so that it faces a particular direction when placed.

So the y2 value that makes it thin will need to be set between 0.5 and -0.5, the closer to -0.5 the thinner the layer but I still can't get opacity on it like default water.

Next I'll see about getting the block to spread when placed down, but I'll have to either set a hard limit on how much 1 fluid block can propagate outward until the volume of the layer cannot be spread out any further or make it so the layer dries up after so many ticks. Maybe the former would be a better solution, but then I gotta decide how much fluid is technically stored in a fluid block.

Receive messages that your allies need help or mining operations have stopped working.

Save your allies from the mobs.

Well this went fucking smoothly, tried to add an active block modifier that should run every second that performs a check if air is a neighbor to the fluid block (at least on one side) and then add a new fluid block to that side.

I guess because I forgot to add a conditional that checks whether or not the block at that position is air, it created a bridge off into infinity going through everything else.

Although even after adding a check to see if node at pos = air, it still does the same thing. The timing of the ABM seems pretty fucked too, setting the interval for how often the ABM runs has no noticeable affect when in-game but when reloading the world save it performs the ABM like a billion times at once.

Rewrote the ABM function, told it to print out the name of the node at the position it was checking, I think the reason I ran into the problem was that I was reusing 'pos' since that variable is obtained by the abm function, despite setting the local 'pos' variable to pos.x + 1

so I named the local variable side, and set a local name variable of that side position, print out the name, and from there was able make the conditional work and it only replaces the adjacent node if the name matches "air".

What I'll have to do now is figure out how to read/write the metadata of the fluid node so that it has limited spread and setting the capacity based on how many tiles it should spread out to.

Got it to spread on all sides, took a while to figure out how to iterate through the nested table of the positions to check. ABM is still too fucking slow though, if I put a function into the node definition to run on_placed it will spread pretty quickly.

It might be quicker to run a voxel manipulation, which updates a wide area at once, but if the fluid block is only going to contain a small volume and spread 3 or so blocks outward then it shouldn't matter.

Alright by switching to using the on_construct call I'm able to set the metadata of the block and fill out surrounding air blocks instantly. I was confused at first and thought it was placing fluid blocks somewhere weird but quickly realized that a 3x3 area fills out 9 spaces, so all is well. It's practically the paint bucket tool now.

I'm not sure how I have to handle the fullness value when it fills out an area, Assuming the player places fluid via a bucket, the metadata should be set as that of a full block, unless I want to change the fundamentals of bucket transport which wouldn't be a terrible idea. Otherwise a bucket would hold, let's say 13 units, so a 3x3 area with 1 extra space on each side would fill out.

Getting the fluid block to construct like if a player places a solid block inside the layer and removes it might be a problem.

Depends on your definition of fun.

Decided to try working on a water block that 'drains' downward, so I made a new water block with a quarter height, and a water pillar that spawns when there is nothing but air under it. The pillar block when spawned will check the position below it and spawn another until it reaches a solid surface and creates normal fluid block.

Now there's a couple of ways I can go about this, as it doesn't look very good with the bottom fluid block not being connected to the pillar, best way maybe to define an 'end of stream' pillar with the nodebox being double the length downward, that way it renders through the fluid block, other option would be defining a special case nodebox for the bottom fluid block that renders a second nodebox inside it, I think the other option is better.

I also thought about the pillar block propagating all that distance, I could potentially just change the nodebox to extend all the way down instead of creating node after node until it hits bottom.

I also added an ABM function that removes and fluid block with a fullness value less than 2 so the thinnest layer will just evaporate after a while.

Water physics are actually similar to minecraft's by default, I'm just trying to implement physics that I think are better, by taking advantage of volumetric capabilities.

To me it's just stupid that for multiple water blocks making up a layer, that each block acts as it's own body instead of making the layer act as the whole body. If I can manage to finish this, then water will behave more like it does in terraria, so if you dig under a pond it will drain out until either the pond is empty or the cavern is flooded.

No more infinite water and flowing slopes.

Although, minetest has no native methods for weather, and the mod that exists is literally a cloud over your head that follows you and emits rain particles, which is garbage.

The way water works in Minecraft is balanced for gameplay reasons. Trying to move water around with buckets is damn near impossible without infinite sources, and water that only flows so far and out of fixed sources is one of the cornerstones of nearly every type of farm in the game. The Terraria method works perfectly fine… for a 2D game! Trying to make it work in a voxel game is just going to make things difficult for players, especially ones more into building.

You'd be better off applying this to a roguelike game than a Minecraft clone.

Since water is already a nigh-infinite resource, making it infinite through neighbor checks is redundant, and it's because players are limited to only having buckets that makes moving water difficult, not because water is finite.

Mods in general always seem to focus more on decoration than substance, because it's easier to just add in fluff than come up with complex or interesting mechanics that make the gameplay more engaging.

One of things that really needs to change in minetest is the look of menus, opening your inventory or accessing a crafting grid or chest looks more like an interface made for a website than a game.

I find it interesting that the water expands specifically in one direction, I assume that's the first cardinal point the function searches? I don't know anything about Minetest's api or what the block's data structure looks like, but what if you added a "viscosity" threshhold and counter. Like this:

>counter resets to 0 for that fluid block if it successfully spreads itself. The new fluid block counter starts at 0.

Something like this would solve the infinite and immediate spreading your video shows. It would also provide a way for different fluids to spread faster or slower, by just changing the rate of incrementing that counter value.

The main problem seems to be with creating the fluid block with a metadata value different than the parent block.

It always creates the new block with the default value, I might need to spawn a different block with no metadata and then update it.

Because it ruins the gameplay experience (I already mentioned that it would break many overworld farms to fuck with water physics like this) and adds NOTHING. You have a nice circular argument: "a game should be more like reality than it is because it should be more like reality, therefore I'm doing this because it should be the way I'm doing it". Really, as the one making the claim that it's an improvement, the burden of proof is on you to show what it adds aside from "muh realism". Which you have not done.

You've got a cute tech demo, nothing more. It's impressive from a programming standpoint, but inapplicable to a real game because it causes more problems than the existing system.

I don't see how, unless a fluid layer dries up when it reaches it's lowest possible value. Farms would still check to make sure there's a water 'source' neighboring it.

Also it's a moot point if these physics are moved into a separate subgame.

As far as 'proving' my claim, it's kind of hard to 'prove' it's going to be a better mechanic than what exists, when I don't have it fully implemented, so yes it's a tech demo.

Many farms rely on the predictability of water flow, especially when it only goes in one direction and for exactly eight blocks, to move around mobs and/or entities. It works specifically because the water DOESN'T flow realistically. Comparing it to Terraria is irrelevant because Terraria doesn't have farms like Minecraft does, so water can just go anywhere and nobody cares; the water is purely decorative, not functional.

If your only goal is to implement a new system as a "subgame" then I fail to see the point of doing it with this. Minetest is a Minecraft clone, where the purpose is to (probably in futility) match the function of Minecraft while lacking its obvious flaws and limitations.

But it remains an irrelevant modding platform because nobody is concerned with making a GAME, just with fucking around with things like this.
