This is what has happened to many studios over the past 15 years, if you can stay independent, you're allowed to do alot of things, even takes risks that can bankrupt your company but once you get bought out, corporate culture comes in and you have to play by their rules, make the game this way and it has to sell millions to make the stockholder happy.
Examples are anything EA has bought, Massive Entertainment that is a slave pit for Assassin's creed, that kinda thing.

I think that MS' strategy is to acquire as many studios as they can to have more exclusives in the future for whatever comes after the Xbone but I don't think they understand why they're in deep water. They "won" the 7th gen by default, Nintendo wasn't even competing in the hardcore market and the PS3 was so unwieldy to work with that most jap devs thought it for a failure and switched gears to make games for the 360, it's because of it the 7th gen had so many shit games. But now? Both the Switch and PS4 are successes in their homeland and japs are all-in again, did they really hope they'll just keep doing what they were doing during the 7th? These days the japanese are more likely to release a game on PC than on the Xbone and exclusives have nothing to do with that…

Game development is expensive and mid to large size indie studios are always scraping to stay afloat even when they have a hit. Stability means that they can keep on working on what they love even if they have to sacrifice some of that freedom. It's a catch 22, they can stay independent on the verge of collapse but be free with little to no money OR be bought have their finances cover for a while and keep working until their overlords fuck up and decide to close down the studio

I'm gonna be honest with you I like Dragon's Dogma but that game is really far from being a good example. The gameplay has its moments but it's a fucking grind, the world is incomplete, the story & plot (alright in terms of presentation and weirdness) is filled with so many plot holes and inconsistencies is not even funny and its far from being grounded in any way shape or form.. the only characters I remember from that game were the Dragon, the dude with burned hands and my pawn. Also japanese making games with western settings is not the same as making CRPGs or games with decent writing or a well thought out world
