I never really played the game because frankly it looks sort of shitty, but Not Important kinda grew on me. He's like the definitive edgelord character model who, unlike Shadow, has his own content that isn't borrowed from a Linkin Park song and can be quoted.
Hatred may have a been a mediocre product of its time, but I'm kinda glad he's around for the memes, especially the ones that "humanize" him in some way. Triggering SJWs was fun too. Even earlier, during the turn of that decade, something as apparently innocuous as Floor 13 (a Virgin-published game) where you basically are the head man of Britain's equivalent of its Glow-In-The-Dark agency was ripped to shreds in Computer Gaming World, which was for a time the US computer gaming magazine. Specifically, it was panned for being 'dystopian and fascist' and 'banal evil' (to loosely paraphrase what the reviewer said at length) to suggest that democracies kill their own citizens via hidden internal security services. They game itself has little to no swearing, no graphic visual content at all (hell the whole game's in black in white), but it was nevertheless disturbing for the time. It's only been reevaluated as a bit of a cult classic in the last 10-15 years.
You might not like it, but that's how it was back then. Keep in mind that this wasn't just something solely due to the preferences of Christian conservatives, which has been suggested by historical revisionists: the CGW reviewer who did the Floor 13 review was a leftist (the EIC of the magazine basically said during one issue's opening letter that everyone working there was a Democrat, after someone complained about a environmentalism game or something).

Terrible is a strong word, but it definitely needs work. I thought the core gameplay idea was fun, but between the off-screen damage (which wasn't really an issue until you reached the city), the aesthetics which did more to hinder contrast than emphasize it, and the really inexcusably bad performance, it needs work. Of course, the issue is that games like this aren't really made anymore. Sure you get top down shooters every now and then, but there aren't too many games that are even mission-based anymore, let alone offer the type of ramping up gameplay that Postal offers. There's always GTA but it would be nice to see a game that focuses on it. Plus I don't think the wanted system is very good in the newer GTA games, Rockstar was retarded and thought that players wanted to die instead of having a fun shootout when they go high wanted level.

You know, now that we are talking about 90s and edge, I remember reading an old PCG…I dunno, around '97 or '98, where they were talking about basic ideas for "controversial" games readers proposed and why they would never get made. One of those propositions was for a game…I believe tentatively titled "Assassin", where you'd be a professional assassin and the last level would be involve killing certain leading US politicians.
PCG basically said this proposal was not going to fly with anyone, since no one would accept killing respectable anyone like that in the context of a game. Of course, under 10 years later, we can immediately think of not only the arrival of the Hitman series but Blood Money and the last few missions of it in particular.

Hojo was going to breed Aerith and Red XIII.
This is Red XIII. You stop him and add Red XIII to your party early on. Hojo is also clearly a sick fuck of a scientist who actually created the villain and is responsible for pretty much everything wrong in the game, and you end up killing him way later on.
In an earlier part of the game Cloud gets roped into crossdressing by Aerith, since Tifa's using a geisha evaluation thing to get close to Don Corneo, a local mob boss, who has information the group needs.
To do so, you have to get parts of the disguise from across a town and filch shit from the local whorehouse, and you can enter the Group room or the Fuck (it's censored) room. Entering the group room means that cloud gets implied rape from a group of gays, entering the Fuck room and cloud has a schizophrenic episode before he can actually bang a woman that actually sets up his character and foreshadows some shit later on. The Group room stuff is played for laughs and clearly is baited to make it seem like cloud would get it on with chicks before the gays show up.
You can also spy in other rooms and one of the rooms has the main corporate villains getting roped into the president's cult sex fetish funtime or something.
After that it's pretty much standard fare, but it was one hell of an aneurysm at the beginning. Mainly to set up just how much of a Sodom and Gomorrah shithole Midgar is compared to the idyllic natural shit that's going on outside the city.
