After having playing over 2k hours of Chivalry I wasn't feeling it for this game, mainly because it just felt like Chivalry with better graphics, not to mention that a lot of the cancer mechanics were carried over. However after seeing the last dev update I might give it a shot because it seems like the devs are actually listening to people and are worried about balance and shit. So yeah, is looking alright but I'm not holding my breath.

It's true the community is what killed this game in the long run but the devs are also to blame, they split the playerbase with the deadliest warrior expansion, did little to address balance issues, bugs and common complaints from its playerbase and then just added cosmetics & some new maps. As for the community I find hilarious how I'd get kicked out of fight club servers for feinting one attack because it was "cheesing the game" but spinning around like a ballerina, attacking the sky, hitting the enemy with the tip of the end of your swing, etc. wasn't considered cheesing.

In the Chivalry community it is pretty much an accepted tactic to kick players who are better than you and stopping you from winning the objective.

Chivalry's combat was supposed to be about footwork, spacing, stamina management and a bit of ingenuity with your attacks, feints & kicks, that's how the game was designed but itself it needed a bit of tweaking and balancing, something that was never done by the devs because of this people found ways around the system by abusing the engine, hit boxes and a bit of lag, this was what would be considered high level play. Mechanics such as 360 hits, reverse attacks, accelerated/decelerated swings, etc were the mechanics that you needed to master to git gud at the game. Having said that, I'm not going to sit here and pretend that glitches becoming mechanics in a mp game is a bad thing or that high level play in Chivarly didn't require a brain. But the issue is that the game wasn't balanced around its core mechanics nor was it balanced around any of these new ones, this created a shitty meta where 99% of duels would be knights with swords because why would you play or use anything else if knights could tank the most hits and swords were the most effective weapons. Also, these mechanics made it so that playing in 3rd person was superior to 1st person in a fucking first person slasher/brawler. On top of that, there was this autistic hate for feinting which made no fucking sense (again, it got me kick off servers & fight clubs more than a couple of times), the argument being that feinting was unexpected unbalanced and "low skill" tactic to get cheap hits… what and the other so called mechanics weren't? How's spinning your mouse around like a fucking retard to get a hit confirm any more skill based than pressing a key? Not to mention it all looked janky and stupid as fuck.

Thankfully I got a key early while they were still cheap, having a lot of fun with the alpha but eager for the game to be released.

alpha would mean that you are playing as a fucking stick man on blocky terrain; I know that because minecraft has polluted the masses no one knows what the fuck an alpha is anymore, but if you have a character, there are animations, and there are assets, and hell, they even look good, that's a fucking beta if not a full retail release despite the lack of official release. They're not going to put anything else into the game, it's going to look like that when it goes out, it's going to maybe get minor tweaks; it's a fucking beta, end of story.

That's pre-alpha or only something for paid testers to bug test a map before placing assets. If you're going to do it properly then the beta phase is when the game is feature complete.

that's some shitty new garbage that you kids are learning and you need to fucking unlearn it fast; these are corporate tactics to make you think the game isn't as polished as it's going to be when it finally "releases" but in reality you're playing a nearly complete beta release of a game.

Alpha is the primary stage of the game, it's where the game is a concept, it becomes numbers in a computer, code on a file, and text in folders. You flesh out how the engine works in the alpha, and late into the alpha you figure out how to implement assets into this abyss you've created; think of the alpha as buying a bunch of sand, some 4x4s, some nails, and a shovel. When you're done with the alpha you have your sandbox. Now what most AAA devs realized is that you can build a sandbox based on a real location, or make a very easy sandbox with a preexisting engine, and then they'll just shape it however they do, usually in very uninteresting ways, and put some characters in it. The true working man will turn that sand into a dungeon and a castle where they take the player to the depths and back again for the final showdown with their great rival.

This is the beta; you start to mess around with mechanics, physics get fine tuned, elements are added to the world, light, color, a sky, and all the fine details are added. The beta is where testing occurs

I repeat, you faggot, you cannot play an alpha, it's like saying you're playing command prompt. The beta is where bug testing occurs, because there are actual bugs to test

Not to say you can't have bugs with the base engine, but it's easier to fix things when the only variables are the engine and lines of code you write instead of models interacting with the edges of a map. The developer and the testers will then take the time to put things down in the world, feel it out, and then repeat this until the game is full of shit, and then further testing will be completed, such as checking the boundaries of every map, testing out every possible move along the edges of the world to see if you can dip out of the box, killing themselves in every possible way, seeing if enemies interact the way they need to, trying every method possible to kill an enemy to see if there are any flaws or techniques that may seem too overpowered, etc.

tl;dr Alpha will not have assets, beta has all assets.
