Never got the chance to play it but that game looks like the type you can't just fire up to kill a hour or so, you gotta have your head in the game the whole time. From watching this apparently perfect walkthrough, the game does look somewhat formulaic like there's a correct way to do things and you gotta stick to that. That said, the game still looks pretty cool, Tsuchibayashi's stellar designs certainly play a part in that.

In summary, when you try and lay some combos on him, the boss will always block your attacks and then follow up with a forward thrust attack, which itself can be interrupted by a low kick. So, the goal is simple; bait him into initiating this pattern, interrupt his thrust attack, and repeat. The result is that you're basically stun locking him, and in this way the entire first phase of the fight can be circumvented. During the next phase, since you'll have built up enough chakra, you quickly kill his phantoms and perform a stealth attack for the tate.

In Shinobi, there are specific levels that can be fun to replay, my favorite is 8-A. You can replay any level you want, if you just have an hour or two to burn, because there is a level select and the levels themselves are small enough that most can be completed within a period of 5 minutes. Nightshade has a challenge mode with a series of levels, so you can just play that if you only want to experience the combat.

It's pretty simplistic, once you learn enemy patterns you will find that most of them will be handled in the same way; killing them with frontal attacks, breaking their guard and then attacking, paralyzing them with shuriken, or going for backstabs. Most bosses will summon minor enemies that you can kill in order to build up a killstreak and get a finisher on them. So, the point is that there's an optimal way to do things, but you are given the magic scrolls which give you an alternative, and of course you can ignore enemies and beat bosses to death with your sword, but neither of these strategies is ideal.

Okay game with an identity crisis that shits the bed half-way through.

It starts as an action platformer, ends with trying to be a metroidvania without only 10% teleports.

Also, the latter half of the game feels rushed as fuck, the plot is all over the place, the dialogue gets really lazy, and the ending… well, without spoilers, you kill the final boss and the credits roll, no cutscenes, no closure.

Also the music gets really annoying, and for whatever reason, even though their main inspiration was Ninja Gaiden, the music uses a Sega Genesis-esque soundfont.

Not only that, but the songs are really repetitive, they always are a ~45 seconds loop, AND THEY HAVE THE SAME FAST-PACED TEMPO. Really, just check the OST to see what I mean.

So all in all, just pirate it if you want to try it, not worth a buy.

I disagree. I loved it.

This is not the kind of game that needs any plot to begin with, and the little it has is pretty good, if a little too goofy at times. It's true the last few levels feel kind of disappointing, especially since the rest is so good. The music did not seem out of place to me, it reminds me way more of the nes. It's a matter of taste, but I did not find it repetitive or annoying in the slightest. Some tracks are a little underwhelming though.

Also it's not a "metroidvania". There are no items to pick up, no stat gains, only a couple of upgrades to unlock most of which are unecessary. It's a platformer heavily influenced by both ninja gaiden and metroid.

It's a pretty short game anyway (12ish hours unless you want to 100% it, which is pointless). I'm not shilling for it, I pirated it anyway, but this game is really good.

I love ninjas armed lotsa guns. This guy's a fucking cyborg ninja riot officer with a missile launching shield and a hugeass flamethrower.

100% agreed. Outside of three tracks that actually benefit from the looping(Ninja Village, Searing Crags, Quillshroom Horrors) the whole OST is 90% a pain in the head to listen to. The Catcombs, Bamboo Creek and Music box are the only decent tracks, the rest, especially the Folorn temple, are fucking ass to listen to. And it's funny how the 16 bit of the OST is mostly worse than the 8 bit.

As for the game itself, it's way too easy to be any good in my opinion. It starts off really solid, with movement options just getting better and better as you get more abilities and the rope dart is geniuenly one of the most enjoyable abilities to use to get around, but then that all just stops when you get the metroidvania part. The levels are too small and too linear to make it any good of a metroidvania and there's little in the way of optional content(yeah big whoop whirlwind shuriken except that it serves no use except that it can clip through walls and as such can make the switch puzzles in the final level worthless, you're too powerful and everything dies in one hit(including the green enemies after a later upgrade which serves no purpose either.), and the killing blow is that very few of the levels are fun to go through again, after you've gotten health upgrades, shurikens and the rope dart/wingsuit aerial attack. all challenge just vanishes and it never shows up again not counting a few power seals.
