Yeah, I feel the same way, and it was really weird feeling for me. I'm not one to wreck random havoc and such in those games, I usually prefer following missions, but GTA4 still had me hooked doing random shit even after finishing the story missions.

The reactions were good, but it just never sat right with me. Especially the baseball bat. It just needed to have more weight behind it. Maybe it felt a bit too slow paced for my liking. While the older GTA games didn't give you much of a reaction once you punched someone, the speed at which you hit someone made you feel like you actually hit something. When GTA IV came out I hated it because of how sluggish the driving mechanics were compared to SA, but I've come to appreciate it. All the writing is pretty good, especially the radio adverts and the random conversations when driving to missions. pirate it and use xliveless, i'm able to play with a 1070 at max settings, except for level detail distance and car density, because the engine allows you to set it higher than it can handle resulting in ctd, set both around 20 - 30, and you'll reduce those crashes from 100 times a day to around maybe 2, plus this game does reach most of the time more than a 100 frames stable which is really nice to see on a 144 hz monitor

If you push Dardan off the ledge in the mission where you kill him, one of Niko's possible responses is "ARRGH I PROMISED MYSELF I WOULDN'T KILL PEOPLE HERE". He also genuinely didn't want to be a low life in Liberty city and thought he was escaping his past life but he found he couldn't escape it regardless of what he tried.

This cutscene really stands out because Niko admits to murdering children. And he clearly suffers from ptsd because he talks about himself in the third person when describing what he did. You can tell he's talking about himself because of the way Faustin's wife asked the question. "Don't you worry about your soul?" "The creature that could do this… doesn't have a soul". It's just thrown in there but it implies so much about the character. None of the earlier or later games have writing this subtle. Even Lost and Damned/Ballad of Gay Tony the characters were just caricatures in comparison.

I'll also add that Niko's entire quest in the game is to kill Darko Brevic but something Darko Brevic points out to Niko is he's exactly the same. Earlier in the game Niko asks Patrick McReary for money inorder to assassinate someone and asks for 5000$.

When you confront Darko Brevic he admits he gave up Niko's squad for 1000$ which he spent on drugs. And when Niko gets angry about it he says "How much do you get paid to kill someone?". If you kill Darko Brevic Niko immediately regrets doing it because he realizes he wasted half of his life chasing this man. And if you don't kill him Niko realizes that hunting him was a giant waste of time and he should've moved on with his life a long time ago.
