From what I remember, BG3 was in the works a long time ago and it would be set in the same continuity of events of BG 1 & 2, but would feature a new protagonist instead of Gorion's Ward following a new storyline with important hooks into the previous games.
Also, they could always just retcon Throne of Bhaal and provide a proper closure to the series since that was a pretty shit expansion that basically railroaded the player in a series of rapid fire and under-developed setpieces which only justified themselves as being an excuse to throw waves of high-level enemies at the player.
Though I wonder if it would still utilize the 2nd edition rules - or are they going to be a bunch of pussies and use more modern editions? What the fuck are they even up to now, 4th or 5th edition? I spent $300 on campaign material and books and shit back when I was a kid, and quit when TSR shitcanned all that investment by dropping support for anything that wasn't 3rd edition. So I have no idea how modern D&D rules even work anymore. I heard they got rid of THAC0 altogether.

As for bad writing, the revision's additions range from not-so-terrible to awful. Glint is insufferably gay and hexxat is so underdeveloped, she was just a token dyke for muh lgbt representation.
