There are a few games that throw you straight into a very confusing situation, often they put you in a place in which the most important events have already happened as in the case of Dark Souls, but what about games that place you straight in the middle of something really important happening without much explanation to leave you confused and wondering at first, and figure out what exactly is happening for yourself.

Transistor is a perfect example of this, as the story doesn't really take place after the end, but just as everything is only starting to fall apart while still leaving out some of the most important events out so that the player can discover what exactly went down on his own.

There's a term for this, in media res.

You are right, I'm familiar with the term but I forgot it, thanks anon.

Metro 2033 started in media res, though in hindsight it seems odd for Miller to explain the basics of survival to Artyom after everything he's already done.

Won't lots of games fill this criteria?

Starting out super-overpowered only to then almost immediately get cucked out of your guns/gear by the villain and then spend the rest of the game building up your powerlevel to where you were at during the game's intro is an effective — if overplayed — vidya trope.

I guess FF8 would could too, technically

E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy is like this. Bonus points for not really explaining anything until the very end.
