That screencap is complete bullshit and I don't know why people still bring it up. Undertale's kickstarter was mildly successful but not that much talked about until the game actually released. Before that, Toby was only really known amongst people who read Homosuck, since he made music for that. I distinctly remember the game only blowing up a few weeks AFTER it released and did the rounds on tumblr and whatnot. You'd figure if it were some marketing firm behind it, they'd have drummed up the hype drums way before that.
It simply has a lot of things normalfags liked, and I still think it was mostly the music that carried it. Practically every song has several million views on youtube. Naturally journos are gonna jump on it as the second coming of Christ because they'll do anything for clicks. If they were pushing it and nobody had heard of it (like with Gone Homo) it'd be a different matter, but it was absolutely a reactionary thing.
Honestly, I don't like the game, but it's simply another indie success story. LISA went exactly the same way, it had a mildly successful kickstarter and didn't blow up until half a year after it released, which is when it went on sale. Don't believe everything you read on the internet.

Even looking at steam analytics, the game at anyone time never had more then little over a thousand players playing it, and that was when it first came out. That little uptick in jan of 2017 was cos of the dunkey video, and it never reached it's initial release peak, it was that small.
Lisa to date, is still a largely underground game, there's no token diversity and no "you're special cos you dyed your hair" message attached to it which make it incredibly hard for indie and SJW folk to get into it.
