I fucking hate that shit. Starting you off with all the abilities then gimping you is one of the worst things in vidya. MMX3 did a neat take on this. You could play as Zero at any point who was basically a slightly better X, but if you died as him you lost him for the rest of the game and got the bad ending, BUT if you toughed it out as X you eventually got all his updates and surpassed Zero in almost every way.

As much as I loved SotN I still hated that. I’d say about the only time it’s acceptable is when you’ll surpass what they initially started you out as before the gimp.

This hurts melee combo games more than most others. In most the things you're missing are just the fastest cars or strongest weapons, but the fundamentals are still there from start to finish. But if you make me grind before I can do anything more than basic air and ground combo strings you've stripped actual mechanics from the game that are needed to make it feel more than a PS2 musou. I like unlocking new weapons. I don't like having to pay to dodge or perform a rising attack.

The main reason that happens is the game expects you to have played the game without importing your save. It's pretty clear importing save games was something they only added really late into development.

If you start the game without having imported your save Geralt starts with a generic Witcher silver sword that he sticks into the Dragon's mouth. Then when you go to Flotsam you're given a quest to craft a new one. When you import none of that happens.

I would have preferred to lose the magic sword (and other fantastic gear) altogether than to get a useless memento. The gear in general in Witcher sequels was handled sloppily. I liked the more restrained but meaningful upgrades in the first one more.

I remember reading about a roguelike that did this years ago, but I can't find it anymore and I'm starting to wonder if it even existed and I didn't just imagine it. I remember it being called something like "one more dungeon", but if you try searching for that you just get some pixelshit roguelite shooter so it probably wasn't actually called that.

Warcraft 3 The Frozen Throne. Sure, it's an expansion to Reign of Chaos, but you start with Arthas full power and you start getting weaker by mission.

Huh, so I wonder then why more games don't do it? Seems like a pretty good way to reform scrubs, because you invite them in with a really low bar to entry that lets them cruise along with minimal effort - which would appeal to casuals. And if you take away the powerups/moves/health gradually enough, it'll always just be a minor tweak to a playstyle they're already accustomed to. Up until the point they're already heavily invested and having those little prideful moments of beating enemies/bosses they wouldn't have been able to earlier. Makes them less likely to quit the moment they hit resistance.

Which seams like a more natural progression to me. As you get better, you learn to be able to do more with less.

DMC, Bayonetta, and other such games are boring overrated gay shit for faggots.

It's to ease you in. If you had a full moveset from the start, most players would probably just learn to do one or two things that kind of work for them, and then stick to that. You'd have a fireball spam in fighting games problem.

But that's fine. Let them fireball spam. Then take the fireball spam away. There's also plenty of ways you could tweak the gameplay to encourage diversifying the moveset by applying selective resistances or adaptive animation triggers for dodges - while still making the moves themselves overpowered and easy to pull off/spam. Core mechanics should always be effective, however - to encourage players to get accustomed to them early on. Mastering them would still providing an increasing difficulty as they leave you more vulnerable to attack than the flashier special movies and it becomes easier to break your character by their diminishing HP and Defense.

This is my only problem with it in most games, you get so much neat shit late game yet you don't really get to experiment with any of it unless there's the off chance a NG+ is actually worth it.

It does. I remember playing DMC3 and thinking it was shit because there were only like 3 moves considering it was the PC port and I was unable to stumble upon other styles since getting into the game was just spamming random keys

Picked it up again a few years later and I got into it, but it was an awful start.
