I've always thought Titus was a great character. I am currently replaying this game now and I've been thinking a lot on why it is meme'd on as it is. I really think that being a product of its time is the main reason it has a dedicated following of haters.

The story itself is rather Japanese in nature. It is written not only by Japanese and for the Japanese (duh), but it is also written of the Japanese. The main characters are based on perceptions of certain religious and regional caricatures; i.e. Yuna is a self-sacrificing priestess/idol, Rikku is the ditsy girl from that different place with the accent (I don't know enough about Japan to say where), and Wakka is from the island-sticks. And, therein lies the problem when the game was brought to the US at the time it was. The early 2000s saw the likes of One Piece and Naruto debuting with their dub/localization being what they were. It was in this climate that FFX was localized. This climate of shying away from being too Japanese led the localization crew to want to eschew some of the original subtleties in favor of flavor that they believed would be accepted by American audiences. However, also do to the times (that is, less money and effort were put into redoing things like lip-flaps and other quality things), things were not changed across the board and led to a game that could be rather emotionally confusing at times. Thus, we have an oriental story being put through an occidental strainer and getting something that only mostly resembles the original.

The voice acting is often criticized, with the HAHAHA incident being most spouted. Now, with modding being available, players can listen to the original Japanese and the English voice audio. With this and taking a retrospective on the story, it points very strongly to the dubbing job being botched in some key places. To put it out front-and-center, Tidus' character was mismanaged. In what seems to be an effort to have westernized him, Tidus is portrayed less as someone who is passionate but very out of place and more childish in voice (though, the two characterizations can be somewhat close). It is not clear whether this was a failure of the of the VA (who has portrayed Johnny Test, Ratchet and Obi-Wan Kenobi), the voice director, merely a product of the limits the that the game's design had forced on the localizers or some combination of the above. In fact, said design limitations are probably the reason that so many scenes in the game feel awkward.

Personally, I like the English voices for Yuna, Rikku, Wakka, find both the JP and English VAs good for Auron, Lulu and Kimahri and liked the JP voice for Tidus. And, to disclaim, I cannot understand Japanese and can only glean context from years of exposure to Japanese culture. My opinion on the whole game is that it is a very good game that suffers from a few prominent window dressing errors.

FF1 - 4 warriors try to save dying world from 4 fiends and evil god that caused it two thousand years ago.

FF2 - JRPG version of Star Wars

FF3 - Same as FF1, but with difference being that some old wizard, fucked over his one disciple by making him mortal. Therefore game events

FF4 - You try to stop some edgy faggot from collecting 4 crystals from 3 different worlds which he needed to kill some eldritch abomination

FF5 - You try to save everything from being erased by some crazy evil warlock, which was only created by entire world negative energy hitting lone tree on hill.

FF6 - You try to stop one empire from conquering world in the end you fail, because one of their genetic experiments went completely insane, somehow got power of god and used it to destroy world

FF9 - "Normal" fantasy world, which is divided into underworld and overworld. But that divide was caused by two world cores colliding and one dying started to leech power from healthy one. One of them gets destroyed. I forgot which.

FF10 - Your MC got warped 1000 years into future after his hometown was destroyed by giant whale

FF12 - Modernized FF2 with you trying to stop some god helping human evil emperor son, from making entire world belong to man and him alone. In the end he was successful anyway by princess of your country destroying the only thing gods could use to guide/control world. You can see how future of that world looks like in FFT.

FFT - Medieval world with magic and some remnant technology from FF12. You are noble who was part of royal knights, until MC got tired of their hypocrisy and decided to leave to work as mercenary. Everything worked well, until he found that church and royalty was build on lies too. You try to get 12 Auracites before Church or anybody else gets them, because they contain former gods sealed scions, who were reduced into mere warmongers to unseal themselves and conquer world. In the end all scions and entire royalty was killed off and MC leaves continent with his step-sister and took Auracities with them to seal them where nobody will find these.

For the rest I either know jackshit about them or don't care at all. Honestly, all of these read like some writer wrote these stories while being stoned.

I wasn't being ironic when I said that. Sazh is the only remotely likable character. Except for that scene when he goes to kill himself. The whole scene was composed like a melodramatic soap opera expecting you to tune in next episode. Except "next episode" is five minutes later when we see he's fine; to the shock of absolutely no one.

I felt the same way about Hope and some guy I argued with about this game IRL said to cut him some slack since he's a kid. I had to tell him it didn't matter since it's stupid to write in an annoying as fuck kid.

I feel the same way about Vanille, but what got me most about her fake happy routine was it was so sweet and laid on so thick it was diabetes inducing. In addition to that it's as cringe inducing as Tidus' laugh, except stretched out over several hours. They wanted to make a character who was suffering inside, but put up a strong exterior and that's a good trope, but they made the exterior as irritating as possible.

As other anons have stated there is no overarching plot to the series. There are several repeating elements, figures and themes, but they all take part in their own, separate, continuity.

The only exception being 12 and the Tactics games sharing the setting of Ivalice, but their stories don't intersect afaik.

Not sure. The wiki page for the Cloister of Trials says you don't need the Bevelle treasure as well, but all the old posts I see on gamefaqs and neoseeker say you do, but it's impossible to miss anyways. Perhaps when I was younger and didn't think it through properly I assumed that since all the other treasures were optional, and the cloister could not be revisted, that you could miss out on Anima.

That anon should note however that several Al Bhed primers, 3 in Home and 1 just before the Bevelle cloister are missable.

I assume my misunderstanding came from when I played it as a teen for the reason I wrote. Indeed from what I read after the other anon responded to me it is impossible to miss the Bevelle treasure. However I think him and the wiki saying it's not a required treasure is for this reason. There are 6 cloisters and 6 locks on Anima's fayth so Bevelle is definitely required.

Valefore being female isn't surprising because I always thought its chest kinda had breasts. However there is nothing remotely feminine about Anima except for the name itself. It matters not since I was wrong to refer to it as a "him", and even now I'm being stubborn by calling it "it."
