Actually what's really interesting is that if you take the top section's ratio and add the coin/move column from the bottom (represented by a net gain in movement and/or coins), DK ends up having the best score.
So as far as risk/reward goes, you either get 5 coins (1/6), or move 10 spaces (1/3), or whiff (1/2). But over a longer game on average, you'll get superior movement and coins even if you miss a few rolls. He's THAT good. Bowser is second runner up, having the highest potential movement overall, but the coin cost affects his ratio.

A single joycon, on its own, is novel that it can be an entire controller but ultimately non-ergonomic. I'd still say it's worth the risk in most cases even once you get established. The extra reach those extra few spaces can give often leads to a second star in a turn since all the maps are so small. Not to mention that rolling a 0 can even have utility by letting you trigger an ally or event space a second time. You can always fall back on the default block to help get set up as well.

At the "Last 5" turns event either Koopa Troopa, Bowser, or Whomp show up and give 10 coins to a player.
Koopa Troopa always gives the coins to the player in first place.

Whomp always gives the coins to Mario. Even if nobody is playing as Mario.
So technically playing as Mario gives you an advantage over playing as any other character.

Anyway, I think the intuition that most people seem to have is right. Since you have the option to always just use the regular dice, characters like DK, Bowser and Diddy are the best because you'll only use their block when you're on a beneficial space and are happy with not moving. Characters with blocks that are the most different from the normal block are better because you always have the option of the normal block, so Yoshi and Monty Mole are pretty poor.
I don't know how valuable the +/- coins rolls are or how much an individual coin means in this game, but if they're important then it makes Bowser worse than DK/Diddy and Goomba/Rosalina a bit more valuable. Source: I never played the game I just like the dice autism.

After playing a few parties, it's not quite a huge advantage but it has some turns that make them completely busted. You can't be too much of a statfag in an individual game since you can only have up to 20-turn games you're pretty far from standard deviation territory. The fruit map also fucks things up since you have to land on a specific warp pipe space to travel between the top and bottom levels or use a late-game Gold Pipe to reach the star if it's on the other half.
I actually like the consistency of Shy Guy's 4 block, since the meta as far as I can tell is landing on ally spaces or getting the ally item as early as possible. Allies give you an extra 1-3 spaces each every time you roll, let you use their character dice block, and they can even help in some minigames to give you an advantage over players without allies. For some fucking reason, Nintendo made it so YOU CAN'T TURN OFF BONUS STARS so the person with the most allies will get the Buddy star for free and almost certainly get the Movement star as well just off of the extra spaces the allies give over time.

Shy Guy's 4 block seems pretty powerful, along with the other members of the GET squad like Diddy Kong and Wario. Having a smaller space of possible outcomes makes it easier for the player to make an informed decision, which makes the difference since the dice blocks mostly average out otherwise.
If there's a map with a buddy space within 1-7 spaces of the starting line then there might be a board-specific meta for what character you'd pick to make it the most likely to hit that space on your first turn.

Mine and Ruins both have an ally space 5 from the start, so I guess Boo is top tier? Nobody has more than two 5-sides, but at least with Boo you have the best odds of rolling a 0 and getting another shot turn 2. I explained that pretty poorly. I meant the odds of getting at least one of those two out of the possible options is pretty high. You only get two bonus stars at the end, but the only one's I've seen so far are Buddy, Movement, Event, and Minigame. There could be a shopping and/or red space star like in previous games but I haven't gotten either of those yet.
Worst case though, that's 1/3 odds of getting one of those, and because of the 20-turn cap making star counts average around 3-4 in my games, (and the player having the most allies usually already in the lead by being able to reach more stars) just getting one of those is gonna clinch it.

I actually agree. An ally should be just that, an ally who gives you the bonus dice block. By giving them an auto 1-2 block added to your number, it almost ensure that rolling a 1 never happens unless you roll a 0 by using a special block, thus removing a lot of the risk/reward the special blocks present in the first place.

Hammer Bro has three 5's and a +3 coins to roll again, so he might be the optimal choice for those maps. You get a buddy as soon as possible, then use that buddy to try and move further and get the buddy star/movement star at the end. It's kind of interesting that Hammer Bro is strong this way despite being tied with Rosalina for the lowest average movement.

I've watched people who've played every MP and they pointed out that the characters with consistent rolls like shyguy and dasiy are the best due to being able to place yourself where you want over praying to to RNGesus.
While coins are a bit more valuable you're not moving if you get it (which is a double edged sword as you get to stay on a spot you get the same effect as if you landed there, so if get on a good spot and have a postive coin then it might be the best roll you can make. On the other hand you need to get stars to really win so you sitting there can fuck you)

In earlier Mario Parties, especially on the N64, there was always speculation of whether Donkey Kong had a much bigger hitbox compared to the rest. Because of this I assumed that DK was probably the lowest tier in the earlier games because some minigames seems to really screw over DK, albeit much more subtle then most would notice.

I just realized. While I get it's part of the aesthetic (MP3 takes place in a Toy Box and MP4 also uses a box/cube theme thanks to being inside the Party Cube) I really don't like how Mario Party 3 and 4 boards take place in some vista floating in space. The rest of the other boards in the series felt like they were in a real place. Horror Land as depicted here is a good showcase of this, as it takes place off the beaten path of a road deep in the woods.
