I just started playing this so I figured I'd make a thread. So far I'm still wondering what weapons to go with and what stats to level up. How does leveling up work in Nioh, is there a level cap?
Going through the first levels in london and japan it almost annoyed me how similar it is to DS in some regards, though combat feels way faster, which is a plus.
Also. what do you guys want from Nioh 2

The combat gets more unique once you start ki pulsing, switching stances, and unlocking more moves. I mainly used the katana versatile and kusarigama op both of which were fun. I'm pretty sure there is a level cap, but that's only for when all your stats are capped out. I want them to make really high quality environments and enemies in Nioh 2.

That's what I started out with. I'm still figuring out the stances and why I should switch between them instead of staying on mid-stance all the time.

>How does leveling up work in Nioh, is there a level cap?
Stats are mainly for what weapons/techniques/stuff you can equip or are able to use, and there are a bunch of NG+ modes and extra difficulties/modifiers so don't worry about capping out since you'll eventually get there as you keep playing. Your armor and weapons have levels of their own and that'll be your primary method of progression. The weapons are mostly balanced but the Kusarigama was added later in the game's development lifecycle and it has great reach weighed against attack speed and damage. Katana is your best bet for when you're learning the game because it's middle-of-the-road.
>>15532009
The stances not only change your attack movesets but also how you fight defensively; it changes how your blocks and dodges work for each stance.
All in all Nioh is a wild ride that does so many things so right it sets a new standard for soulsborne games, and it puts DS3 which came out a few months before it to absolute shame.

Read the description of flux again, watch the demo video, then try it out on low level missions.
Ki pulse/flux is essential to mastering the combat, and getting the most out of it.
Also, it just feels damn good to do a mid stance combo, flux into low stance, do a heavy combo, flux again into high stance, and use a skill like quadrisect or quickdraw.

Once you unlock them switching stances lets you use more special moves. Switching stances also gives you access to different moves, and that is an essential if you want to play better. Swing vertically if you're in a tight hall. Swing horizontally if you're surrounded. Kick a yokai to deplete their stamina. Use strong knock back to throw people off cliffs. Use a fast low stance attack if you don't have much of an opening. Go all in with high stance if you deplete someone's stamina. There's a best move to use in every situation, and that is determined by who you're fighting, the environment, and how much of an opening you have to attack. You'd have to find something really over powered to be the best in any variation of those three factors. Like the other anon said there are also different properties on the stances themselves. You don't want to get caught blocking an axe/hammer in low stance instead go mid. You don't want to roll around a lot in high stance instead go low. You don't want to attack someone's guard with low you'll be deflected instead go high and you can hit them like normal. Combat is more rewarding if you branch out on which moves you're using.

Guess this means Nioh 2 will be a prequel or side story and not Meiji/Satsuma rebellion era whackyness.
That's unfortunate because Satsuma rebellion is exactly the right time period for effective sword and gun combos. You have have mostly percussion cap guns surplussed from the rest of the world, some cartridge revolvers and the rare (end-game) Remington rolling block (Japan had a few at this point in 12.17x42mm RF) and pistol caliber lever action rifle.

I remember some anon talking about the horns MC gets pierced with in the trailer could be referential to Nobunaga taking the arrow from his neck and wearing it like horns.
If it does end up being the rise of Nobunaga, I would be fine with that. Although, It would be nice to see the game story continue until Hideyoshi's death.
I still think Nanbokucho or Kamakura period would have been good, but the suker punch game removes the option of mongol invasions for some time, if not forever.

Is it possible to switch around weapons mid game or will you lack the skill points to use varied weapon sets effectively until NG+ or something?

I don't mind the loot part, but stats and leaving the door open for min-maxing always tickles my autism in a bad way because I always feel like I have to get it right from the start or else I'll miss out on something. I prefer to have fixed stats and focus entirely on gameplay so I don't have to worry about it. That's more of a personal quirk though.

You can switch mid game, no problem. Those books of reincarnation are purchasable at the shop, and in WotD up, they become mission rewards.
But your first playthrough, you may come across four or five in the wild and not in the shop.

I like Nioh, in the same way I like a lot of games that aren't all that great. It lacks depths, and the weapon mastery system could have been used for so much more. The combat was nice, the new weapon styles that it brought to the genre was nice. If only it wasn't so god damn simplistic and boring.

I liked the story but they should've considered adding a lexicon of some sort to the game, because most monsters and characters in the game all had connection to Japanese history and mythology, something i got aware of halfway through and had to use the internet to look up.
However, the game was fine and fun, most fun i've had with a new game in a couple of years. Some bosses however can be dick-hard, especially if you do not use cheese-tactics.

What the game really needs is more enemy variety with more unique mechanics and less reskins
Also I'd really enjoy it if it was open world, or at least the stages was more like episodes with large maps (for example if each region of the last game was a single map), but I really doubt it's gonna happen. This may interfere a bit with the replaying of missions, but they could go around it - for example if you beat the boss of an area you can do a mission in a walled of version of it..

Go with what weapons you feel like. My first playthrough was primarily axes with odachi and katana as secondary weapons. Going to focus on spears, katanas and kurasigamas my next one.
I'd like Nioh 2 to cut out the fluff and filler, the grinding and farming. Too many missions, too many repeat areas, too many repeat areas. This would all be fine but the game is pretty long with a heap of content (can be a good thing), but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Hopefully Nioh 2 learns from the mistakes of Nioh 1 and fixes them all. More enemies, more variety in their attacks perhaps, more locales (as much as you can in Japan). I'm assuming Yokai forms take the place of spirit animals or perhaps they're going to really crazy and let you have both.

Areas get reused for sub missions, but they enemy placement and shrine placement will change. Main missions will always be new stages, and there sre a handful of sub missions which use areas of maps that were previously unaccessible, or a new map entirely.
Here's a pro tip: Tonfas suck ass. The combos are fun and look good, but the damage output can't really compare to other weapons. The only exception being if you gear your set bonuses for tonfa gun.

Tonfas have lower HP damage than other weapons but higher Ki damage, more mobility, and Demon Dance + Kannagi. Those two skills give you i-frames when you Ki pulse and let you animation cancel any skill attack by Ki pulsing. Their damage is lower than other weapons because they allow you to play incredibly aggressively.

That sounds cool as fuck. Are gun-tonfas a late-game weapon?

Only one tonfa in the game has Gun Tonfa as a guaranteed effect, Sarutobi's Gunsticks, and Gun Tonfa won't show up as a random effect outside of the Abyss. The earliest point the Gunsticks can drop is from the boss of the first mission of the second DLC, so quite late in NG. The Gun Tonfa effect also only works with Crimson Lotus and Devastation; the "thrust" finishers. It's very cool.

Alright I'm really having a hard time getting used to the combat, Especially against bosses that just eat my attacks and continue like nothing happens. Fighting the bat slut right now and she's kicking my ass.
I try to look for the moment when she's recovering from attacks, but I can never pull off more than one or two hits safely. Is it supposed to be a pokefest? The fast nature of the combat and the switching stances to recover Ki makes me think I ought to be able to land at least a combo or two but the fact that they hardly get staggered and can't get parried means I'll always eat shit when I try to commit to a combo.
Doesn't help that I haven't really found my jam when it comes to weapons yet if tonfas really are going to fall off quickly. Kusarigama is hard to get used to, axes too slow and katanas are alright, but I still eat shit with them. How do I get good?
8d987b No.15541557
>>15541316
Most bosses have very quick recoveries and basically infinite poise, unless you ki-drain them which gives you a good opening. Most bosses can be ki-drained pretty easily with Kicks or Headshots, or Salt/Water Pots in normal difficulty, some bosses will even ki-drain themselves by spamming combos and shit. But in higher difficulties they get so much ki that these tactics become less viable.
You don't need to switch stances to ki-pulse, just tapping R1 is enough, there are some skills that you let you do other shit by switching stances whilst ki-pulsing, but I never fucked with those. You can also get the skills that let you ki-pulse by dodging and you can kind of ignore R1.
Tip for Hino Enma, when she flies into the air hitting her with a quick ranged attack will knock her down and ki-break her, giving you a nice opening. Don't forget to also dispel her Yokai Realm puddles with perfect ki-pulses or Kekkai Talisman, if you don't get rid of them she'll have pretty much infinite ki.

f95949 No.15543572

Tonfas don't fall off, they never start. That aside though axes just take a much slower playstyle, and don't really boast the damage that makes it worth it on bosses, they will ruin normal enemies though. any double weapon (tonfas/2kat) both have bad dps but are more reliant on being able to dodge and find smaller openings (except for one move on the 2kat that does good damage, but is a hilarious crutch). Kuri is the god king of DPS, Spear is living weapon's wet dream, and 1kat is good for basically anything.
Pure ninjutsu is a valid way to play once you get some items. Omnyo is used mainly for buffing, avoid sloth talismans though because they're a massive crutch that's only going to hurt you later.
