Honestly, the best you can do is a mix of both. Make a good filler but also make an story mode with the anime story so far. Anime games are made so you can involve in the plot and live it through gameplay, and having something additional like it's own original content it's pretty nice.

So they did not only changed the art style, the current one being FUCKING SHIT but they also did it during the most boring arc to date. I started watching Shingeki no Kyojin like a month ago. I keep hearing it was pretty good, and in all honesty it was. I was really hyped during the whole thing and I watched the first season in just a week even during my work. Then I hit the third season and I honestly don't want to watch anymore. The opening was enough for me to feel sick of my stomach The ending song is pretty good, though. Glad the arc already ended.

I gave up on the story after the protagonist went from a batshit insane "shoah all the titans" nutter to some PTSD suffering, cowardly little bitch that constantly gets one upped by everyone else in the cast.

It was especially jarring how in one scene he fails to use the gear properly during training because it was not calibrated properly (but still impressed the trainer) and then a few chapters down the line he's a bumbling oaf that can barely avoid smashing into a wall. He goes from a relatively smart guy with a streak of crazy to a complete imbecile that needs everything spelled out for him too. It's likely one of the worst cases of flanderilazion I've ever come across.

It didn't help that the story was giving these Lost vibes by piling question upon question I knew the author had no good answer for and that it was all going to crash and burn the moment he was forced to answer any of them. Glad I didn't waste my time.

I admit, the whole "We become good soldiers" hype was way better than "Eren is a titan" shit. I went in blindly, I didn't have a lot of spoilers about it or knew anything about it at all. That's just generic shounen shit problems rather than general protagonist problems though. I will say though there is a proper and improper way to make a character who is a hot headed idiot and that's to make him stupid at everything except fighting. Kengan Ashura does this well with Ohma not being a knuckle dragging retard but you can tell the only thing on his mind is that he wants to fight and get stronger and everything else is just second priority. Then when he actually enters a fight he does have to make decisions albeit latest chapter giving him anime powerup about how to win and how to fight to win which he's good at. I will say for all One Piece's troubles Oda has managed to keep Luffy completely from falling into this trap as well. I've never felt like Luffy is a retard in fights and anything Luffy gets to use is either him creatively using his powers (as opposed to getting new one's) or training his Haki (which is the only bullshit "power up" that Luffy ever receives, but he still does his best to use it creatively.)

They're made for little boys, which while not as common as they used to be in Japan are still the most relevant target for manga sales.

If we're just comparing Kengan Ashura I will say that most of "other things going on" aren't relevant to the fighters as the premise is that companies are just using fighters to solve disputes. Therefore there is a strong disconnect from the fights and the fighters, and the politics and power grabs companies are making since that's the very basic premise of the manga.

You're definitely not as "Shounen" literally means little boys, so don't feel bad for not liking it. The things that draws me to the medium the most is that most Western entertainment has completely forgotten how to do a black and white morality story about a guy who is just a good guy winning against he bad guy who is just a bad guy doing bad things. Sure neutral character's pop up from time to time to spice things up but the return to basics makes for a refreshing palette cleanser from anything like, say, Golden Kamuy which obviously has some straight up good guys (Sugimoto is definitely not a bad guy, Asirpa is literally an innocent child being used a map decoding device) and some straight up bad guys (some of the criminals who get killed off quickly are very obviously just murderous assholes like the doctor) it very obviously sets up a very grey field for the teams and power structures involved which is very interesting and rewarding, but gets tiring when it's done again and again and again story to story to story. The worst example of this being Thanos's change in motivation in the latest capeshit from "I am killing half the universe to impress death itself" to "I need to prevent overpopulation by killing half the universe as opposed to doubling the resources available"

The entire point of the Shirou vs Gil match up is that it is the worst possible match up for Gilgamesh, who can win against any "user" by just throwing things they're weak against at them, while a "collector" like Shirou does not have a strict weakness other than being a human in general. Gilgamesh is treated as being a King who doesn't know how to fight properly who just overwhelms his targets from a distance while Shirou can keep up with and even surpass GoB launch speed using projection to deflect Gil's NPs. Him and Gilgamesh (or rather, Gilgamesh's Gob and UBW respectively) are of a similar nature and a similar league, allowing Shirou to win because while they both of access to practically unlimited NPs Shirou is better at fighting than the "King".

Haki was introduced like 200 episodes ago. The first power up luffy get is his Gear Second and Gear Third. And I loved them because they are perfectly logical for a guy made of rubber. But then Haki is introduced and it literally becomes power level. Sure, since then he is cleaver using both Rubber and Haki, but doesn't change the fact that is power level shit. Basically,technique doesn't really matter anymore since haki works with "will power".

OP is so long that it's hard to gauge when things actually started happening I apologize.

Thinking about the arrival of Haki further it might have been a "nerf" to the Logia users that Oda had made and unknowingly made too broken as fuck. The only way Luffy won against the two Sand and Lightning asshole is because he discovers the water trick for the former and is completely immune to the later, otherwise Logia users are just OP is fuck for not taking damage for most attacks under normal rules pre-haki. This left two options to Oda

>have every fight with Logia users from now on resolve the same way the Crocodile one is (discover weakness -> apply weakness to baddy -> punch really hard) This fails to take into account any Logia user that just flat out has no "reasonable" weakness like the Light Admiral. As far as anime powers ups go it's very reasonable compared to say, Naruto or Bleach, where the introduction of the ability just makes MC faster/better/stronger with no interaction. It's very obvious that Oda probably wrote himself into a corner with the Logia users so he created a system to counteract they're OPness, however the pendulum has now swung the other way where now Luffy can solve every single Logia fight quite easily since he just counters it flat out now, regulating such fights to other character (Zoro taking on the Snow Harpy).

Further damning evidence of this is how the Zoan users get a "buff" around when haki is introduced because they were the most underwhelming of the three until they introduced Rob Lucci and co's hybrid forms if I remember correctly. I do admit that Haki is a bullshit anime power up, but unlike Naruto or Bleach, it applies to almost everyone. What is the real bullshit Haki power up is Haoshoku which only special snowflakes get to use which in my head marks the first time Luffy is just given something to make him stronger and different from most other people with no work on his part.

In the end I will say Haki is a bullshit powerup but I believe it's more of failure on Oda's part to create a "balance" for the Devil Fruit users and over correcting rather than something akin to Naruto's "chosen one" bullshit. Still bad but it just feels different to me.

Personally I always felt that Haki was just a 'barrier to entry' power for the One Piece high end. I mean Mihawk was doing wave slashes in some of the first chapters. I think for a while the plan was to just have the 'seastone' stuff become more and more common to counteract devil fruit, but since that's kind of a kryptonite that just ends the fight instantly he probably felt Haki would allow for more tension and less binary situations. There's certainly that element as well, but that's barely acceptable as an excuse. It's similar to the introduction of Bankai where, yes, to be the big cool guy you need to master your sword or whatever but for MC it just makes his faster and stronger. I don't know, I hate to keep comparing Naruto but Naruto is just the poster child of this even more than Dragon Ball Z. There's a difference between a power up actually augmenting what the character can do and just making the character faster/strong/better. You get Naruto's bullshit Sage Mode or whatever where it doesn't do anything interesting it just makes him "better", you have Goku's transformations that only make him "better". You get Ichigo's mask thingy that just makes him "better". Compare to say, Naruto learning how to use Rasengan where yes it's just a new method of attack but it's not just juicing Naruto it's a new option in fights. Busoshoku Haki appears very close to these sorts of power ups and honestly does most of the same things which is why I understand the complaints about it being a bullshit powerup but it does actually augment Luffy's ability to fight by allowing him to hit Logia users, which an ability that augments is different in my mind. This one also doesn't get stronger by yelling, it's only useable based on personal stamina and as Luffy demonstrated he can't use it non-stop he has a very vulnerable rest period he needs to recover from though time will tell if this weakness remains. Kenbunshoku Haki as used in combat is in a similar place where on the tin it says it allows you to dodge better in practice it makes you "faster" to react to things since you are sensing said things sooner, there's barely an augmentation here but if I were to stretch it it does allow you to "sense" other people's presence which doesn't allow sneak attacks but it's splitting hairs and I'd say it falls into a similar camp of a boring power up. Haoshoku Haki is the biggest problem child as this is literally the one where you yell to be stronger (or in this case you technically make the opponent weaker by "putting pressure on them) and only special snowflakes get to use it.

Honestly if Oda had introduced Haki without Haoshoku it would have been perfectly serviceable but he didn't so oh well.

I admit it was kind of neat for the anime take a chronological approach showing Annie, Berth and Reiner as kids after the first Colossal appearance but the manga going straigh for the second one while throwing few flashbacks had a better pacing. Everything aftwards was shit and by the time second season was released, I had already dropped the manga and series altogheter. Everything I read about current happenings with my friends just makes be feel better with my decision.

FighterZ story was nice for the character interactions but it took way longer to finish due to clone bullshit. If you can't offer better experience as gameplay, just make it short then instead of having 3 different ways to kill Android 16. I'm completely fine with a non canon new take on story as long it's fun like only a few of those side movies TOEI puts on theaters or BD/DVD.
