So i'm replaying both of these for the first time in like 10+ years and holy fuck did i forget what a flawed but fun exercise they are.

Take the multiplayer campaign idea of Left 4 Dead and take Code Veronica controls but allow free movement while aiming and you have a solid idea that in the day of small player online horror games like Dead by Daylight you would think of longform campaign would be super popular.

I completely forgot stuff like the arklay mountain hospital in file 2 that was a undiscovered outbreak from years ago. It fleshed out the area and made you want to know more about the arklay area.

Why do you think we have gotten multiple REmakes and ports but Outbreak was forgotten?

Because Mikami did that four game exclusivity deal with Nintendo, RE0, REmake, P.N.3 and RE4, now Outbreak was a good idea, but too bad it was terrible in several design choices, and how static it was for a multiplayer coop game, while having little innovation aside from online multiplayer, because back then, online infrastructure for the PS2 was pretty much outdated by the time it was released, there was a lot of fun shit, but my god, they forgot the fucking fun while focusing on the online coop gimmick.

It was rushed out, they cut a lot of content, like the prototype cover-system and guns, they really had no idea what the game would be, but hey, Space Jill Valentine Bounty Hunter Lazer Dancer, there's also the fact they might have recycled some assets from Dino Crisis 3.

That intro is probably my favorite intro ever, I feel as though it summarizes everything I love about the RE franchise without saying anything.

But yeah, Outbreak was ok. It needed polishing up on infection mechanics, but I can't say much about co op because I bought it after online bit the dust.

I bought the game when I was drunk, brought it back home and installed it, and immediately regretted buying it upon sobering up. Like waking up next to an ugly bitch. Ended up selling it to a friend for $20. He still thinks I ripped him off, and last time I talked to him, was still trying to get his money back.

Good news, anon. You can still play both Outbreak games online, even if you emulate it. There are fan severs. It's still pretty fun. It's great if you have a few longtime fans of the series that are really good at the general RE gameplay, because some of the later campaigns can be difficult because people apparently can't get used to tank controls if they didn't grow up with them, so eventually these games will die with the oldfags who kept them alive.

I got my ps2 modded and connected to the outbreak private servers but getting friends together to play online is like pulling teeth.

I used to play on emulator but the chance of crashing or disconnecting was just too high.

Knowing Capcom, they lost all the source code and assets for Outbreak. Here's hoping that in REmake 2 there's a possibility that it could be used as a base to make a proper online coop game that didn't have long load times and shit designs, and that goddamn infection meter.
