Breen was right.

Humanity had no hope of survival against the combine. The entirety of earth forces were decimated in 7 hours by a small scouting party and the entire game you're fighting the equivalent of out of shape mall cops.

I'd agree with you if not for the fact that A. the Black Mesa team actually has a plan to cut Xen off from Earth, which, if successful, would mean that the mall cops would be all you'd ever HAVE to fight, and B. post-Combine Earth was clearly a fascist hellhole and due to the anti-procreation field, humanity was slowly dying. It was basically a choice between rising up and hoping to beat the odds or just quietly laying down and fading to black. And humanity will NEVER take the easy way out. Well they won't in stories, at least; in real life they'll take the easy way every time.

I also remember some celebrity they brought on to shill their game spoiling the plot before release but it didn't fucking matter since you already knew exactly where the game was going three minutes in.

As for the thread topic:

<Dagoth Ur.

>Learns that the (((Dwemer))) are trying to create a god out of the remains of a dead god.

>Scrambles up a force to stop them.

>Stops them so hard they collectively cease to exist.

>Has to decide what to do with the keys to godhood.

>He knows their power is too great and will only ever be abused.

>Wisely suggest that they should be destroyed.

>Doesn't trust the shifty fuckers around him, knows they're definitely going to abuse the fuck out of them.

>They come to the conclusion that they should totally be preserved and never ever get used for real we promise no lie.

>Doesn't buy their bullshit and siphons just enough power from the heart of Lorkhan to protect the tools from the shifty fuckers practically drooling on them.

>Didn't count on his best friend taking their side so it turns out he didn't quite siphon enough.

>Those shifty fuckers you didn't trust kill you

>They also kill your best friend who trusted they wouldn't ever abuse the fuck out of the heart of Lorkhan because they promised for real they made a pinky promise.

>They immediately abuse the fuck out of the heart of Lorkhan just like you thought they would.

Spoilers for OFF

So what do you guys prefer, living in an Orwellian nightmare ruled by incompetent, abusive and insane God-like beings that berate you everyday, use your bodies to create narcotics or plot your fucking destruction while your ruler does absolutely fucking nothing? Let me remind you that you are also living in an artificial world made of artificial materials that make everything look fake and unpleasant. If you think that would drive you insane, well all that surround you already are so don't even expect a normal fucking conversation well unless you are talking to Zacharie, or the Judge, but the first seems to be just as aware of the fact that the world is ass as he seems content with helping Batter end it, and the second is at the brink of insanity having secluded himself from the rest of the zones, building a fucking drug den just for the sake of somehow coping with all the shit that has happened, which grows even fucking worse when his brother dies If you had a chance to end it all, wouldn't you? I'm not surprised that Batter considers this his holy mission, for all it takes he's just mercy-killing everyone by this point.

That actually depends on what exactly the Culters and Jians disagree on, and how much their squabbles were affecting the efficiency of EYE, both of which are pieces of information we are not given in the story. If the two sides had some kind of irreconcilable difference that could not be compromised on and EYE's operations were suffering because of internal politics, then Rimanah is right. If making peace was possible (real, stable peace, not the unsteady one that exists at the start of the game), or petty internal arguments weren't affecting EYE's operations, then your mentor was right.

>>15510524

I think that the problem people have with The Batter is that his approach is incredibly heavy-handed. The guardians were all good people once, and might have been able to be persuaded to become good people again. But that's not the story of OFF. OFF is a story about mercy killing.

I'm sure some kind of OFF/Undertale crossover where persuasion happens is a thing somewhere. But unfortunately it also probably sucks.

Star Ocean 3. The bad guy just wanted to purge an MMO, that he owns, of rogue AIs that respond to basic computer maintenance by trying to kill people. Seriously, of all the problems with that stupid, completely unforeshadowed twist this is one I'm surprised people rarely mention.

His sister's only argument is they're advanced intelligence and should be treated as human because they're advanced. Keep in mind that "human" characters are actually the extreme minority in this MMO, as genocidal aliens and lots of other monsters vastly outnumber them.

Undertale gets a lot of shit but it actually handles both the pro-escapism and anti-escapism extremes simultaneously in its two main endings, which is unique if nothing else.

Pacifist: Pro-escapism. Befriend a bunch of friendly monsters. It beats real life.

Genocide: Anti-escapism. All the friendly monsters aren't real. Kill them all and get access to the two best boss battles in the game. If you do a genocide run more than once, the character at the end will outright tell you to stop because you've finished the content and there are other, better games you could be playing instead.

A lot of people never get to see this dynamic for themselves because getting all the dialogue in the genocide route requires multiple playthroughs, and resetting the game at various points in the final battle.

Nigger the whole point is that you are not supposed to treat it that way. The whole genocide route is filled with things that are supposed to make you unpleasant for the sake of berating you for not treating it as anything more than a fictional world. The game is trying to tell you that despite it's being a game, the world inside of it is very real and alive, I'm not saying that it succeeds at doing that but it's what it's trying to do. The genocide route is you breaking that illusion and the game trying to make you feel uncomfortable for that.

On the other hand, now when I think about it, it could be considered anti-escapist, because I think the genocide route is supposed to represent you not letting go of the game, replaying it until you get bored of it and destroy the experience for yourself by pushing the game to it's limits and breaking the illusion of the world that it was trying to create so I guess it could be considered anti-escapist in that sense.

We're not arguing over whether the message matters or not because that's up to you, we're arguing over whether the message is escapist or not-escapist. The fact that you don't care about the message doesn't mean that it's not here.

On the other hand, that's a fair point, but that's:

This is one of those niggling questions about the Mega Man series that's never really explained or explored. There's a lot of room for individual interpretation and a lot of really interesting things touched on but never taken any further… The nature of Proto Man's "free will" or the hinted at angle that the Robot Masters in 9 went rogue out of a sense of self preservation (that was of course dropped because that's too interesting so we just had to have Wily mess with their programming instead) are the big ones that come to mind.

I've always liked the idea that Wily was desperate to prove himself and became obsessed that his creations were better than mere tools to be used for human convenience. That his machines were perfect in ways that man was flawed. It creates a nice parallel to Dr. Light creating X as the first free willed robot (actually and by design free willed. Proto Man was a bit of a fluke and more of a gray area) and then sealing him away for fear of how humanity might react to that.

>>15525824

If I recall correctly:

1.) Wily and Light are only partners in the English translation, it's not mentioned anywhere in the Japanese story.

2.) Megaman X was sealed away, not because of, (or at least not just because of), how people would receive him, but to receive 30 years of ethics testing, until the pod's program deemed him ready to interact with mankind.

If you're just taking a story that's been adapted into a video game and counting it, then that's dumb. Talking about Future Trunks killing Frieza in Dragon Ball Z isn't video games. But talking about Future Trunks joining the Time Patrol is. And then that would make discussion about stuff that isn't original to video games possibly relevant, as it would make sense to discuss other things Trunks did as it all informs his role in the video game original stuff. But in this case, just taking stuff Griffith did in the manga first which happened to get video game adaptations totally doesn't count.

But the whole thing about X being the first robot with free will is dumb anyway, because you're gonna have a hard time convincing me that Rock never had free will, especially if we're counting things like Super Adventure Rockman. It almost would make sense to argue that it means he does not have to follow any programming, such as how Rock was programmed with the Three Laws and was reprogrammed by Wily in the future, but then the Sigma Virus reprograms Reploids all the time even though they're supposed to have X's free will. So how is that free will at all? It's the exact same thing that happens to the older robots.

GUN killed his whole family, and a bunch of other scientists and their families aboard the ARK, for the crime of trying to cure AIDS and saving the world from aliens. GUN is still in power today, yet we're supposed to consider them the good guys? This is even as they do idiotic things like locking up Sonic because he looks vaguely like Shadow, even though they know exactly who Shadow is and Sonic is a celebrity who has saved the world on countless occasions. Yeah Amy is stupid enough to mistake others for Sonic, but at least she doesn't know about the other people she's mistaking for him, while GUN knows perfectly well who both Shadow and Sonic are. Then they chase you down with a giant truck that smashes and kills everything unlucky enough to be on the roads or sidewalks as it takes up entire streets. It runs over Big the Cat. But we're supposed to forgive them immediately after and think they're the good guys, even as all the stuff they did 50 years ago comes to light.

And what is Eggman's crime? Sure he keeps trying to build Death Stars, and he blew up half the moon that one time, but GUN has their own Death Star too. Oh, Eggman used to capture animals? Only because Sonic keeps recruiting them to work for GUN. At least he doesn't kill them. All he wants is to create Eggmanland, a giant amusement park. Certainly better than living under GUN.

And I would certainly say they were intended to have at least a bit of moral greyness in both Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog, even if you were still clearly intended to side with them in the end. They're also in Sonic '06 but yeah not really important to the plot of that game, other than establishing that Shadow and Omega now work for them, and that they have jurisdiction in Soleanna, which might have been a detail they never thought about, but has strong implications for their role in Sonic's world.

We've only seen them openly operate in one known country: Sonic's version of the U.S, to which they answer to the president of. Soleanna was them sending a total of three agents to it, and that was purely to infiltrate Eggman's base and take the scepter. The rest of what Rouge, Shadow, and Omega did was their own decision. The G.U.N. of old took out the Ark, but, as far as we know, all they knew was that Gerald allied with an evil alien to create a giant laser cannon and a bio-weapon. The G.U.N. of now is led by one of the Ark's denizens and a close relative of Maria's, and has only acted in defense of the world, their one, single mistake being the arrest of Sonic (who then resisted, beat up their men, damaged an expensive helicopter and several of their robots, and tried to escape). And you can't go "''but they sent a giant truck that was rampaging through the streets, so that makes them bad" when Sonic does the exact same thing to every car he runs into. Furthermore, G.U.N. is explicitly absent from Station Square, Grand Metropolis, the cities in the Riders games, and every single nation in Unleashed.

At no point do the games even imply that Eggman has any animosity towards G.U.N, aside from them getting in his way. He didn't care about them in any game prior to SA2. His single line where he mentions his feelings towards Gerald is just him saying he looked up to the guy as a child. Eggman's only depicted motivation has been to rule the world and build a themepark in his image.

Nothing supports Eggman's goals as noble aside from game theory-style stretches and massive assumptions based on tiny tidbits of information.

Gerald drove Gerald to insanity. He made a terrible decision to secretly ally with extremely evil aliens, without telling anyone his true plans, and got bit in the ass for it. I'm sure never advising the king the battle was a bad idea, fleeing as the battle's already fucking started to ensure the king's doomed, and grabbing power for himself was completely candid, anon. Have a bit of a critical sense regarding people of power instead of sucking the dick of the first one you see flaunting a pretense of breaking the mold.

>I'm sure never advising the king the battle was a bad idea

He says this when you meet him. He says they should wait for reinforcements from Redcliff. Cailan says "we just need the grey wardens" and "maybe we should wait for forces from orlais" which causes Loghain to go nuclear.

>fleeing as the battle's already fucking started to ensure the king's doomed

He only did this because he felt Cailan was leading everyone to their deaths and he needed to take over to prevent the country from being occupied again

>grabbing power for himself was completely candid

This was the guy who was best friends with the guy who originally took over the country from Orlais. It's like Che taking over after Castro's son dies. Loghain's daughter is actually in-line for the throne and you're told the public want her as queen in some capacity.

the more you think about the grey warden's from an outsider's perspective, the more retarded the entire thing is

it's like some french king bringing in a bunch of hindu mystics who claim some hindi deity is gonna come and slay everyone, but only they can kill him

>did nothing wrong

>would have killed his country with the blight, only failed because a nice shapeshifting old lady rescued the people

who could save it

You can say he did nothing wrong based on what he knew, but what he knew was wrong.

and if what he thought was right (which is way more likely than the mysterious gyspy order being right) he would have been saving his country

the king is still to blame no matter what you think, he should have done more to bring his vassal or general or whatever loghain was to know what was going on instead of acting like a derp

>Star Ocean 3. The bad guy just wanted to purge an MMO, that he owns

A highly popular MMO that the entire world, not just kids and otaku teens, play, this is like someone suddenly deciding to purge fagbook, jewtube, rebbit, cuckchan, this place, etc without warning, and without even justifying himself.

>of rogue AIs that respond to basic computer maintenance by trying to kill people

The sentient AI was peaceful until luther introduced his data erasing program, i mean if you consider genocide of innocents "basic computer maintenance" that's alright, but people were getting killed in droves just because the owner thought that his NPCs gaining sentience was an error.

>Nier

Wrong.

From Nier's perspective

>shades start fucking attacking everyone, so you fight back

>living a happy live with his daughter

>daughter has a deadly disease

>shades keep fucking attacking

>your daughter gets fucking kidnapped

>with the help of a >girl whose only relative was fucking curb stomped by shades, you set out to save her

>while you fight everyone to save your daughter not a single fucking person thinks it'd be a good idea to explain anything to you

>save your daughter and selflessly scarify your existence

From shadow Nier perspective

>Humanity's only chance at survival

>waits with his daughter at his side

>wait more

>one fucking thousand years later still waiting

>can't wait anymore, going fucking insane with wait to the point where shades are going nuclear

>takes what was supposed to be a non-sentient robot body to put his daughter's spirit in

They were both good dads blinded by love for their daughters who just wanted to help them. Everything considered, neither of them did anything wrong.

wrong, there's another spin-off in the works, and Spike Chunsoft was hiring modelers and the like to work on "a Danganronpa game"

so it was basically just killing off all the past games on the series and permanently tainting any new ones all for the sake of a twist

Was Mother Brain right to go against the Chozo and Galactic Federation? While the Space Pirates are not innocent in the least and signingup with them is questionable enough to label as "did nothing wrong", the future showed the Galactic Federation was also no good either.

>I'm sure never advising the king the battle was a bad idea

They're talking about exactly that when you meet them. Cailan is a dumb gung-ho chad with ONE capable grey warden, two nerfs and a crappy battalion and he thinks they can beat a fucking army from hell cos he has his best gold (bad idea) suit on. They should never have been there int he first place.

>fleeing as the battle's already fucking started to ensure the king's doomed

A battle that was doomed form the start which would have gotten all his men and him killed leaving Anora to rule an increasingly war-raped landscape,

>grabbing power for himself was completely candid

I agree the powergrab is a bit much but what's he supposed to do? He's the most likely candidate and even if his info is wrong he's the better choice over Anora, he even plays within the rules and becomes reagent not claiming anything absolute.
