>SMT4 was excellent
No.
No it really wasn't.
Don't get me wrong it was alright and not a bad game, but it has a ton of issues.
The story is a bit of a mess but not too bad, the whole Masakado shit comes out of nowhere just to give Flynn a power up. Isabeau also needs to learn to shut the fuck up.
Gameplay wise they fucked over STR builds by making every str/gun skill cost MP, making str useless early on, even gun builds are a better choice because you can exploit elemental weakness with it as well.
Smirk system is way too random and your partners will fuck you up more often than not.
Skill Inheriting is also way too easy, to the point where you don't even need to change builds with new demons, just Inherit the same skills that worked over and over again, you can even overwrite a demons stock skills.
I can appreciate the freedom but later on in the game I was barely changing skills at all, just copying whatever worked on to my next demon.
Also SMT4's alignment system is the worst fucking attempt they've ever tried on that fucking shit, good luck getting the Neutral Ending without a guide, it's about an 8% chance.
What it did had was a good sense of atmosphere and a fantastic soundtrack.
> already have apocalypse but saving it so have a legit challenge to look forward to
Don't
SMT4A is a travesty, it shits on the original plot of 4 and replaces Flynn with that horribly designed main character, they "fixed" the partner shit but they are even more annoying.
>get a new demon
<Wowly whiskers you're amazing nanashi!
>don't get a new demon
<You should really get this demon nanashi! It's super strong!
Every. Fucking. Time.
I guess this warrants an explanation.
SMT4 had a split in the dev team, the Old guys and the New guys.
Old guys wanted to make a standard SMT title, while New guys wanted to make one with a "happier" spin on it. Most of the New guys ideas got scrapped all together, but there were a few that remained.
SMT4A was done by the New guys, this was the game they originally wanted to make, as such it feels completely different from the other games in the series, calling SMT4A nu-SMT isn't far off, it really doesn't feel like it belongs.
You will notice the tonal shift immediately once you reach your first hideout and listen to the music there.
Also every character acts fucking retarded yet suffer no consequences for their actions despite nearly dooming the world many times, but no biggy because it all works out in the end since it's the MC's party.
Kill your friends, kid.
If you want another good SMT title for the 3DS I heavily recommend Devil Survivor Overclocked. It plays differently than regular SMT games but once you get used to it you'll find a system that rewards team composition much more. I played through it recently and had a huge blast with it.
Just don't get the EU version as it's broken.
Naoya is a good cousin and he will never do you wrong.
