I have to say that the game is slightly gated by stats and a dumb skill "tree" with a binary single target hueg dmg, gay aoe dmg and a couple dead paths that are just a line of stats, real fucking creative.

Some of the quests are fucking stupid, the good quests are the one that isn't complete garbage. Also unlike hyper light drifter or other shitty indie games, your movement dictates your dash but I find punishing your dash to be fucking stupid, you get punished by spamming where you can wait half a frame and immediately zip around, it's dumb and bad but it could be worse.

Half of the enemies are kind of good where you can punish their attacks but some of them are outright poorly designed, who the fuck decided to use a stupid level gimmick as the ONLY WAY to hit them, absolutely pants on head retarded.

The best fights are definitely with apollo even though his moves are souped up a bit.

Using pixel art != going for a "retro" style. Sometimes it is and usually games that do are garbage and wank, but sometimes people use pixel art because they're just not very good artists. The thing is that pixels allow you to create something that's visually appealing, but doesn't take massive amounts of time and effort, leaving that time and effort to be used on other things such as, you know, the gameplay.

Let me give an example of effectively used pixel art. I'm a big fan of a mobile game called To Arms. It's 100% pixels and quite frankly looks like crap. But I still love it because the graphics are not part of the experience. It's effectively a deck-building solitaire game with little pixel soldiers and workers instead of cards. So good animation and super-detailed character design are not important. What IS important is simple recognizably and visual clarity. Take a look at these sprites. Try to assign names to them. I'll bet you'll get more than a few of them right.

Here's the answer key:

Cleric Nun (with Nun-Chucks) Monk Paladin Skeleton

Gladiator Viking Barbarian Felinomad (ok you probably didn't get that one) Necro Guard (if you guessed something like Blackguard, that also counts)

Zombie Werewolf (this is probably the worst one in terms of art) Princess (I'd also accept Priestess) Sergeant Demon

See, there are tons of pixels but everything is still super recognisable. Plus, you can get a general idea of a unit just at a glance because they have consistent key features. Some of them hold weapons, so they're probably going to be helping you fight monsters. The ones with glowing eyes and monstrous appearances are generally enemies to be fought, not recruits for your army (the Felinomad being the only exception to this rule). The ones with pointy ears (except the werewolf of course) are elves, and will almost always have the elf feature of swiftness (which effectively means drawing extra cards). Later in the game, you'll see the mousefolk, which can clearly be identified with their mouselike features such as whiskers and rounded ears. Pirates are another faction that appears later, and they have easily identified pirate-like features such as eye-patches, cutlasses, and bandanas. The Viking is easily identifiable as such, and has the interesting feature of counting as both a pirate and a warrior; although it's not immediately identifiable as a pirate, it makes sense that it counts as one thematically. It IS easily identifiable as a warrior, and is fittingly introduced with the warriors and then slotted in with the pirates later.

See, it's things like this that separate functional "bad" art from simple garbage. The visual design is incredibly simple, but gets across every point it needs to get across. You'd never

You'd never mistake any of these sprites for any of the others, and you can get a basic understanding of a unit by appearance alone. Simple game design choices make the visual features of these sprites stand out more, and give the player a good understanding of how to interpret them. It's not about how much EFFORT you put into your art, it's about how much THOUGHT you put into it.

See that's awesome, but probably took more effort for a similar quality of final product than non-pixel art would have. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, beautiful pixel art can be a selling point of a game, but it's usually more efficient to use other techniques, so most developers don't use pixels when good art is big important feature.

The difference here is that those games were developed in the mid/late eighties-early nineties, on old hardware that had hard color limits which forced devs to get more creative woth their coloration and shading.

Cross code, on the other hand, has the luxury of using the entire hex color wheel without color limitations.

The artstyle for character cut-outs reeks of tumblr and low effort. The examples you posted have detail that is orders of magnitude greater than cross code.

Those examples are all from visual novels too. A bunch of still images. If you look at something like Rusty, it's not nearly as good-looking as those. The CC devs also had to work with limited money and talent resources. Would it really have added that much to the game if they used all of the colors or polygons instead? Don't really get where the tumblr connection comes from. It's wapanese, sure, but wouldn't a tumblr game make the mc overweight or something? There's a big rift between your expectations and what they realistically could have done. It looks serviceable, the gameplay is fun to me, it's a great time killer, it just feels genuine.
