I agree completely. I've actually been recovering my old Twisted Metal games because I've had the urge.
A lot of people bash Twisted Metal 3 because of how slow and clunky it felt and how awful the stories were (which they might've been) but it was better than the PS3 Twisted Metal imho, which only had 3 storylines I think?
The selling point of Twisted Metal was that multiple combatants all had a wish they wanted granted and they fought to the death to get it.
Car combat, as a genre, is almost as dead as the psychological horror genre or the sci-fi RPG genre. Kind of sad considering all of those are my personal favorites.

I figured it out a while ago as to why Car Combat is dead. And the reason is that Car Combat is basically a translation of Arena Shooters to Consoles and game pads. Since Arena Shooters are dead, Car Combat is dead in turn.
Also I think 3 was lambasted of going from 2's Grimdark to III's wackiness. Though you are right about TM '12, which focused more on online play rather then the single player. The 989 games had good soundtracks though
