I played these a long time ago but I remember Armageddon having the biggest variety of weapons and the best team editors and map editors. After Armageddon, they began to streamline and cut out weapons and features and Worms 3D was total crap. Trying to migrate to console killed the franchise, I believe.

Worms armageddon definitely was the best with all the weapons and ability to influence the map seed. I pirated worms 3 (android) and the anti pirate system makes all your worms use pirate voice and wear pirate hats. They also only get 1 health and are always sick so you can't heal. It actually made the game challenging and fun.

I find it to be the best, as is I still play it today with a small group of friends. Ropes are easy to get into but the momentum you retain from them along with the way you bounce off walls allows from some nice moves, there's a healthy amount of weapons that act unique, and the artstyle is timeless. My only gripe is the mortar is useless.

In the gba game world party the mortar wasn't effected by wind and had a set velocity so it was easy to know where it would land. Don't remember if it performs the same in armageddon.

From memory most of what the PS1 version cut were the voices, amount of worms and teams you could have in a game and the level editor, plus the resolution was scaled down. Some of the missions and challenges were possibly changed/removed but the core gameplay was mostly left untouched. Although trying to do tricks with the Ninja Rope was almost impossible compared to what you could do on PC (quick swapping is out because of no hot keys). It was watered down but I wouldn't call it consolized.

It was obviously World Party but then Team17 gave the Armageddon code to Cybershadow and Deadcode and got a fuck ton of necessary updates that put it way over World Party now. 2 was also a good contender since it has better weapon customization but all the other features edge it out.
Of the 3D ones Forts Under Siege was my favorite, that's all I have to say about them since they are not that good.

There is even another update in the works but it's taking a long time (Some disagreements between the two maintainers I mentioned).
About the updates themselves, they fixed a FUCKTON of bugs, and increased the limits of everything you can do, for example the size of maps can be HUGE, so is the amount of mines/barrels that can spawn. Many more things are configurable and you have support for modern resolutions like 1080p. There is also the replay system, every match you play is recorded in a very tiny replay file that can be played back with the game at any moment and converted to frames to create a video. I think the game has better mod support also.
I'm probably forgetting a lot, if you look through the changelogs there is a ton of work in each update.

If we talk about Vanilla World Party and Vanilla Armageddon World Party is superior due to more content, but the recent versions of Armageddon are very superior even to the remade version of World Party because two spergs from the forums made it into an actual masterpiece, so it has full mod support and allows fuckhuge maps.
