1. Ultimate General: Civil War
Made by the Darthmod team, a true TW successor project, it's tacticallly even superior to TW, too bad it lacks the strategic map part.
If the dev went up and make Ultimate General: Napoleon, it would be grand.
2. Cossacks 3
Come out a long time ago, more AoE than TW, but notable due to the sheer scale, you can surely perform linear tactics with it.
3. Ancestor's Legacy
More Company of Heroes than TW, but the presentation & gameplay are solid, the campaigns are lengthy and cool and you can scratch your TW itch even with the smaller unit count.

The Seven Years War is very similar to TW games except its campaign part is realtime. The devs are currently working on a US Civil War game.
Don't know if Graviteam Tactics games count but the tactical part plays similarly to TW games. It lacks the campaign part though.

Cossacks 2 has an OG Total War style campaign map, it's decent but as an RTS game, micro-heavy (you must manually order every company to fire and retreat etc).
Pike and Shot / Shadow of the Shogun are turn based wargames and both have OG-TW (Risk style) campaign maps and great mod support.

These are the kinds of threads this board should have more of for all the complaining we do about AAA titles. Related to the thread topic now I recommend Ultimate General: Civil war. There's no overworld map to move around in or towns to build up, it's just battles, typically in sets of three with two minor skirmishes and then a major battle of the civil war. battles you can recruit more men, horses and cannon with the money and manpower you earn from your performance in battles. I believe they were talking about adding into the game a feature where the harder you beat the enemy also makes a difference to how strong they are in later battles allowing you to effectively bleed the union or confederates of soldiers. The battles can get very intense and seem to drag on a bit (only really happens in the large battles of the civil war, Manassas etc) I do find that a bit draining and need to take a break after larger battles sometimes, but your mileage may vary.
Also would it be worth making a general thread for recommending lesser known alternatives to AAA games? Given how pozzed and shitty the industry is these days it would be nice to build up a list from anons about good lesser known games and smaller devs that aren't pozzed or just shitty.

At least Medieval 2 mod content will always remain far superior to anything CA puts out. The final version of the Italian Wars was released last month, it's great.
Some other TW-like games may be those old Warhammer Fantasy ones, Shadow of the Horned Rat and so on, although I don't know much about them.
Dawn of War 1's Risk campaign with persistent upgrades, units and defences etc sort of fits the bill but is again an RTS rather than a large-scale war game.

Short version is they ran away when the going got tough. Slightly longer version is that they were ordered to pull out and consolidate on the mainland to defend against barbarian incursions. I just tried out Ultimate General: Gettysburg and lost pretty badly. The game is interesting. At first I didn't like that you have to drag units to move but it does allow you to control your units path better than setting waypoints like in an RTS so I think once I get used to it I'll like it. Having to place artillery in locations where they have a good view of the terrain is also cool but I'm not good at it yet. The Union cannons always seemed to be in just the right places to hold up my advance. Grapeshot is hell. Finally, fuck you Stuart.

Yes. I know how to play the game. But the entire mechanic and logistics of pike and shot is about achieving high saturation. The entire system fails when you can stack 100 soldiers on top of each other and move around as a blackhole of rifles getting far superior engagements. Same applies to pikes. Its not even the only problem. The fact that a cheap cannon can solo the most expensive ships in the game in a couple seconds while said ships cant even damage the cannons is just bizarre. Bring a great big warship to bombard the enrmy from offshore and have to run away because there's one cannon ont eh beach firing back. I don't know. It's very hard for a game to replicate what the Total War games do.
The problem that has plagued TW since Rome 1 was how the series would expand it's concept.
They tried different combat mechanics in TW Empire, but it was so poorly executed they abandoned gunpowder at Shogun 2. Combat was never expanded upon in a way that synchronized together. Naval combat was kept separate and gimmicky.
Combat was basically the same thing every game until Warhammer came out. Every Iteration on it was more style than substance.
Many of the campaign map mechanics in these games also don't synchronize well either. A lot of the things they added were passive systems and gimmicks. The Senate in Rome 2 for example doesn't really do much or have any visible affect on the gameplay.
Warhammer is probably the best TW game right now because it has been able to break the trappings of the old games. Anything not implemented dev's is pretty much covered by modders, they've even modded in a naval combat prototype into the game now.
A lot of the Old games never really innovated with gameplay but Warhammer definitely has. With both Campaign and Combat.
This "women-generals" news is ages old by the way. They only recently said "lol don't buy the game then you nazi's." and everyone is riled up over that.
Don't really care because only a moron would buy Rome 2 anyways. CA seem really in love with the Rome sub-series for some reason. It's gotten so many updates that it never needed nor deserved.

There are many strategy games that can have you controlling 1000's of units fighting at once, but just because they have that gimmick doesn't make them a Total War Alternative.
Ultimate Ebic Battle Simulator I think is the best example of this issue. Where, beyond the simple spectacle of 1000's of units fighting each other, their's not much there. Nothing that would make it an Alternative to Total War's Grand Campaign mode. Ultimate General's isn't like TW in this respect. It's a series of predetermined battles, not a dynamic campaign. It looks fun, but I wouldn't compare it to TW.
Same goes for all the other grand strategy games posted in the thread: Paradox games, 4x games. Yes they have a similar feel to then tw grand campaign, but they never let you peer into things at the individual level. Hearts of Iron never let's you see the individual soldiers gathered together ready to fight each other at the squadron level. All you see are miniatures on the map, not on the battlefield.
Total War is the best game in this respect. Where you can take on the role of a nation's leader, make complex management decisions for that nation, engage in your own foreign policy, and then fight your enemies on a pitched battlefield with the thousands of individual soldiers that you, as a leader, assembled together.
No other game really gives this experience, or at least none that can achieve it with the same level of polish and scale that Total War has.
That's why through all of CA's bullshit people will still play these games.

They exist they're just not out yet. Darth's Ultimate General is start of things to come, Knights of Honour 2 is being developed by Non-CA Black Sea and they get really angry when people ask them if CA is involved. I think Black Sea Games is intending to be a direct competitor with their former employees who went off to work at Crytek. Because Knights of Honor 2 will be a direct competitor just as the first one was, the only difference its that its full real-time. My earlier post about CA having killed the studio is only true for Knights of Honor 1 hence don't buy it, pirate the fucker. But the sequel is full indie and its looking great. We haven't seen battles yet though, they've been saying that we'll see more next year.
