No. In fact, you shouldn't get hyped even if you think there's something worth looking forward to, cause you never know how the suits behind it all will try and fuck you. Anyway,

>What did you think of the REmake 2 demo?

>How about the Pathologic 2 beta? Is Pathologic even horror?

Didn't play either one, I'll wait until they're released and we can see real footage of the game.

>Favorite horror trope?

Not sure about that, I have to think about it.

>Are jump-scares gay?

Yes, they absolutely gay, but I mean they're just another tool in the tool box, so maybe they won't be so gay if they're used correctly.

Finishing up Silent Hill 1. Lots of mindfucks that make me excited to replay and scrounge up every bit of lore I can. I was excited to play SH2 but it can fucking wait.

My friend and I always do October game streams, I play the Horror games because he's a pussy but he plays a few horror-motif games to compensate. He wants to play Geist this year and I have yet to pick what I want to play. Maybe I'll do Fatal Frame.

Last year we played Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Luigi's Mansion PAL Hidden Mansion and I actually got him to play Resident Evil Remake. The best time we had was playing ObsCure co op.

Man, just about everything about Darkwood is great, but the sequence in the end to get the best ending is the most bullshit thing I've ever had to do in any video game ever. Worst part is I did it, and still somehow died on literally the threshold that would've taken me to the credits. Really soured any subsequent playthroughs, but damn that atmosphere and sound design is fucking spooky.

I find most horror games fall flat. Most of what I find gives a better horror experience is a game that isn't normally scary and perhaps gives you a pretty good sense of control over the game and even being fairly powerful. Suddenly it throws a curveball where you're suddenly in an unsettling location, facing unsettling foes, and it's better when it's just not really explained as to why the hell everything is just "wrong".

Jumpscares are the sugar-buzz of horror. only good for a "boo" and anything can be in place of the things that jumps out.

What I've found is that something that doesn't jump at you, possibly doesn't have any music, and is just THERE like it's always been there but clearly doesn't belong is often the most disturbing. Granted, it needs the right setting and ambiance.

here is another writefag.

And the interesting thing is, you don't need to "make up" too many horrifying things in the ocean as it's gone through a whole platter of horrifying creatures, but adding some traits straight from nightmares can help make them more horrible.

That said, I think this "pressure" game that doesn't exist would have potential to exist.

>random spawn point in an underwater base

>2 to 8 minute timer before earthquake hits that damages the underwater base but also opens a fault that unleashes shitloads of ancient and fake monstrosities

>need to find items to repair the escape vessels

>as time goes on, creatures may destroy sections of the facility

>to re-reach these areas (and some others), need to put on a deep sea suit and walk/swim around to get materials

>this is where you can get killed by either man sized creatures or bus sized creatures

>you can repair two different subs

>one is pretty speedy but it makes shitloads of noise and is likely to get one of the massive fuckhuge creatures to chase and devour you

>the other is a slow, traditional deep sea sub, but it's quiet and you have to do a progressive sneaking pathway to work towards he surface and safety

Throw in a map boundary during the final escape that is a giant tentacle that snatches you away into the void and we may have something.

A small indie game call Blood Bath Bay has the deep sea diver aspect and the horrifying "things" coming out of the dark to chew on you, but good luck finding any vids of it that aren't youtuber bait.

Marrow some sort of metroidvania with otherworldly horror elements. prticulary being hard and punishing just because (can only attack in certain directions, no map specially cause you need to backtrack, could only find one full playthrough in YT)

You play as some guy trying to save some orphans taken by some creaturesinto a mountain, revealing a buried city/town filled with fucked up beings worshipping some otherwordly god.

Exoder by the same author, pure platformer, each area has its own gimmick, similar elements like otherwordly horrors and such, also very hard to play)

Fear & Hunger, some sort of rpg maker game with detailed sprites, dark heavy ambience and dsimemberment mechanics. Also has a "Head or Tails" mechanic when exploring and looking for items.

>that Poughkeepsie Tapes video

That fucking movie is all over the place, it was so disappointing. The actual "tapes" were all really well-done, they were all really unsettling and really made me feel like I was watching the recordings of a madman. But the absolute shit-tier acting during the "interview" portions of the mockumentary are a constant reminder that it's just a movie and makes it so much less scary. Also,

>the killer could be in THIS VERY THEATER RIGHT NOW OH NO

Anyway I've never been very interested in survival horror games but I've decided I'm going to try and play through the Silent Hill games for the month before Halloween. Gonna get the PC versions of 2 and 3 running thanks to this handy little guide and I just started emulating 1. I've played it for about 10 minutes so far and even though I haven't found it all that scary so far the game has great atmosphere. Took me a bit to re-acclimate myself to the PS1 tank controls I remember as a kid but it's not that big of a deal. Game looks pretty nice too after playing around with my emulator's video settings for a bit. I'm looking forward to seeing how the series progresses, even though I doubt I'll be able to get through them all before Halloween. I'm wondering though if Silent Hill 4 is worth playing, it's included in the guide but I'm pretty sure fans of the series don't like it. Should I even bother with it?

>Favorite horror trope?

That I find actually scary? Body-horror and grounded-in-reality psychopaths(like in Texas Chainsaw Massacre). But for cheesy horror tropes nothing beats skellies.

I was actually thinking of doing that once I've got all the fixes and whatnot copy-pasted but I'm hesitant to do so. The first reason is that with the improved FMV's/audio files it would be quite large for my shitty upload speed but the second reason is that the guide says that they're currently working on a way to get around using WineD3D For Windows for people with Nvidia cards. I wouldn't want to upload an archive claiming "it's got everything you need pre-installed" while people with nvidia cards get weird graphics glitches when they use it. Whoever's working on those mods/guide seem relatively active so hopefully soon we'll have an extract-and-play archive we can pass around the sharethread for anons like me that are looking to play for the first time while avoiding troublesome PS2 emulation.

Blood Bath Bay is pretty good if the deep sea bothers you, though it may turn into a type of comedy after you listen to your diver's exclamations when he's being attacked.

Alien Isolation is sorta fun, though for the best playthrough is to not fight any humans and instead bait the alien into butchering everyone.

And as other mentioned ,Darkwood is spooky shit.

Apparently he started with a Newgrounds flash (again, self deved) and eventually moved onto a 3d project. So far your goal is to explore and collect 30 snails that are supposed to be a cure for… I think a Zombie outbreak on the surface? Not sure. But you have to platform, run, dodge and use your 12 shots sparingly as it takes 3-4 shots to kill one of the danger fish and you don't get anymore ammo, so it's best saved for a moment where you keep getting caught by a specific fish again and again.

>hyped about

The only horror game to be hyped for is REmake 2 right now, and I don't feel too much hype for it in all honesty. Still playing it Day 1 as I'm an RE fan, if I imported Gun Survivor 2, I'll play a high budget REmake of the second game.

>REmake 2 demo

The RE Engine doesn't look too good in bright areas. The Leon demo looked much better, as do the few scenes we get in the car garage.

Gameplay is what I expected, REv style where you can walk and shoot, but not RE6 style with quickshots and sliding.

>Pathologic

Don't care

>Favourite horror trope?

This isn't a trope, but I love facial body horror. Rewatched Day of the Dead, and the opening scene where you can see a zombie with its full tongue flapping out cause its jaw is torn off is cool as hell.

Kids who are supernatural or monsters are also cool. Saw a bit of that in the first REmake 2 trailer and rumours say Claire and Sherry's game with have a Lisa Trevor like child zombie

>Are jump-scares gay?

If they're undeserved, yes. Jumpscares that are few and far between are fine. Best ones are hidden jumpscares, like in RE1 '96 where you can go to the front door and a dog will jam its head through it. That should've been in REmake instead of the gay ass 'dog jumps through cause Chris/Jill is retarded'

Nintendo still co-owns the Zero IP, and the switch is essentially a standalone wiiU gamepad that can go main console. It can't use the dual approach but I'm pretty sure a better Maiden of Black Water could be done on switch.

The primary problem is that the game's unique brand of gameplay literally only works if you're standing up, able to turn around without any restrictions, and for some reason, P05 at no point instructed the player to do it, leading many who assumed it could be played seated to just dismiss the gameplay as shit. I never imagined a game not holding your hand and letting the player discover the meat of the game by themselves could spell its own doom, but here we are.

Nigga, the happy ending is the Promise one and that was in the original version. Wii version includes Shadow Festival, in which Mio arrives too late, is swept up in the Repentance, and becomes one of the damned spirits. The other is Frozen Butterfly, in which both Mio and Mayu's minds fucking snap and they just stay in the village, Mayu taking care of Mio like a doll.

I need more games like Demonophobia. I'm not a sadist, but I really love the atmosphere and the absurdly autistic sociopathic heart the devs poured into this game. I hate rape stuff with men in it, I think it's disgusting and degrading, it's a good thing Demonophobia has none of it. Yeah, the sexual violence is even more terrifying here, but I don't feel as much disgust as seeing rape.

I had a chat with some thai guy who was one of the playtesters for this. It was a joint project consisted of a bunch of programmers and 2chan artists, and it's one of the pioneers of the relatively obscure ryona trend in japan. The sequel Xenophobia was made by a completely different guy and it never got finished, just a passion project after all.

Do you guys have any horror games or anything really where the villain is a human, but the story still centers around paranormal happenings, and where the human antagonist is the cause of those happenings and is deliberately causing them for the sake of an agenda, bonus points if also paranormal in nature for example killing people in a ritualistic manner by the use of mind control so that you can turn a location into an eldritch version of itself but stories where the antagonist is just using his powers for a more down-to-earth goal like killing people for the sake of revenge/power/whatever are still alright.

You know what would be cool?

With poltergeists, you often have the explanation that they actually are the latent telekinetic powers of a still-living human who has a bit more emotional baggage than is good for it.

What if you had a poltergeist which was projected by a living human but actually does not know that? Like, say, imagine you have Adam Adamson, who has the means to project a poltergeist, but said entity actually believes it is the spirit of his late aunt Edna, whose tough love still produces intense fear in Adam.

From there on, it basically turns into a vicious cycle - Adam believes Aunt Edna is after his ass for one reason or another. Said belief in turn powers the poltergeist, and whenever an exorcist drives out the damn thing, "Aunt Edna" immediately comes back because Adam still believes she wants to haunt him.

You'd have to answer the would-be-ghost questions which only the actual Aunt Edna could know. Not that the entity would gladly watch on while you try to undermine its own existence.

I can tolerate jump scares because they're more nuanced and varied than anons usually imply. Take fatal frame. These games often use jump scares, but they're always pretty low key. The ghosts appear suddenly, but quietly. They use eerie sounds, not loud ones. Furthermore, these jump scares aren't the be-all end-all of the scene, as you're expected to either fight them afterward, or just photograph them as vanishing ghosts. There is a jolt, but they're only meant to keep you on your toes and maintain the tension, not raise your fucking heart rate.

Cry of fear, conversely, uses literal fucking screamers. Not all the time, but even once should be a federal offense.

You can create tension by the way of sufficiently terrifying ideas. Lovecraftian horror doesn't need jumpscares, because it's supposed to induce existential dread, induce an existential crisis in you. Think about it this way: Why would the literary genre of horror even exist if you needed jumpscares to scare the reader? You can't just write "AND THEN A SCARY MONSTER POPPED OUT", you instead need to write something disturbing.

I remember a shitty walking simulator horror game, I don't remember what it was called, which made you go through a small house looking for tapes that liken the way that the house is built to anatomy. And it was fucking terrifying just because the idea itself was scary, the problem was it would be better in text form instead of a shitty walking simulator.

The whole idea was that your house works kind of like a person, with the kitchen being the stomach, the corridors being the veins that circulates people, the bedroom being the brain, even the visual imagery is disturbing enough, but the ending was what made this story trully terrifying. It ended on the note that the bedroom is not only like a brain, but also like teeth. As we always lay to sleep during the night, giving ourselves on the mercy of the house to protect us from all the danger outside. We trust the house, but we grow weak and helpless in this very moment and we don't exactly know what might happen during that period. Maybe someone will sneak into our house and kill us, maybe the ceiling will fall on our heads. It ended with the explanation that the bedroom is like teeth, because it's the place where the house can betray us and grind us to dust. The idea itself is creepy in it's own right, it stays with you, and you start thinking "maybe I'm really not that safe as I thought I was", this is how you should build fear in viewers through horror. By making them realize some uncomfortable and deeply disturbing truth that will stay with them, or by making up a theoretical idea that is equally as scary as the truth and stays with the viewer as well.

I guess I will give you a more serious answer since that was decent post though.

Thing is you're right. Literature isn't scary. It can be creepy or disturbing, but you can't scare someone with words. In a way horror writing is a bit like erotic writing in that you're ultimately trying to achieve an end which would work better via a visual/audio medium. But that doesn't mean you can't have some degree of success. What you're getting at is that there is more than one way of approaching horror and the way you prefer (and plenty would argue is better) is the approach which goes about being creepy/disturbing as opposed to being tense/scary.

I want to see more games with symbolic enemies

like silent hill, cry of fear, and the suffering, where every enemy is a representation of something beyond simply being creatures of this world (like in every other game)

the malefactors of the suffering embodying the various methods of execution as well as the history of the island

the monsters of the other two titles embodying the various mental problems of the protagonist (cry of fear, sh2) or the history of the girl (sh1)

the bosses of rule of rose representing various adults and the abuses they were either subject to, or subjected others to (most notably the mermaid being a young woman who was sexually abused and blackmailed)

hell even the ghosts in fatal frame represented actual victims of the history of the mansion and it's hidden practices of human sacrifice

can anyone mention other games with symbolic enemies (enemies that represent something else)?

-

the second type of enemy i like are human's who were made into monsters through means that can be found in our world, rather than by a curse, a possession, a virus, or some futuristic transhumanist technology.

the people you fight in the game of condemned are barely recognizable as human, most are homeless people who been changed by squatting in abandoned buildings or sewers, junkies who altered themselves with drug abuses, fetishists who had themselves surgically altered/mutilated out of mental illness, also people who were tortured into homicidal rage by serial killers or grotesquely burned by fires set by arsonists.

These guys looked inhuman, but they were all 100% human.

it's the same kind of horror you get from the cenobites, in that they appear as surgically altered humans that could very well exist in our world, rather than as the eldritch horrors they actually were.

the condemned games also did a good job of making human characters look like monsters, even without the metal cancer and brainwashing, they still be scary as hell.

anyone have any other games with "monsters" in them that are actually mundane humans?

another interesting idea for enemies would be humans with birth defects, like the the hills have eyes remake, they are humans, but with differences that set them apart from the rest of humanity, two heads (some form of conjoined twins or parasitic twins), atavistic traits (like tails, webbed digits, or bodywide hair), being excessively short (dwarfism) or tall (gigantism), having traits from the opposite sex (women with unusually high testosterone production or unusually low estrogen production - or both, the strong woman or amazon, men with unusually high estrogen production, unusually low testosterone production - or both, the hermaphrodite), skeletal deformities (such as hunched backs), an inability to produce pigment (albinism) or an inability to stop the production of pigment (melanism), or a disfigured face (from, say, congenital syphilis), being particularly obese (one a rarity, and often played up as a cannibal) or having a skeletal appearance (usually due to a genetic disorder rather than an eating disorder), or simply looking like a corpse (ala cesare from the cabinet of caligari).

All of these have been used in fiction as signs of inhumanity within humanity.

Have you played The Suffering? The Festers are slaves that were left to drown or be eaten by rats on board their ship when it crash landed because the slavers rightfully thought that they would kill and eat them if they released them. The result is a grotesque creature with it's insides crawling with rats that attack the player. A lot of the creatures in the game tend to be a product of the fucked up nature of the prison built on that island.

>and the puzzles were the pinnacle of ridiculous use bizarre object X on place Y.

The only thing I disagree with because it's no worse than some of the puzzles in RE2/3 (looking at you water room) and is a moot point. The rest I agree with mostly, because it was the first Resident Evil game made fully in 3D and didn't have the advantages that prerendered backgrounds did on limited hardware. CV however looked fine on the Dreamcast and HD ports (aside from the shitty darkness the port had for some reason) CVX looks better but misses the softer shadows and older aesthetics. The advantages of using 3D backgrounds however mean the fixed camera can be dynamic and move in interesting ways with the level, which offsets the complaints of not seeing an enemy coming around a corner and gives the developer more tools to mess around with. Ideally, this is what they would have gone with going forwards with the series.

Now lets talk about actual flaws with the gameplay and not subjective aesthetic shit. There is a lack of enemy variety in the game and Bandersnatchers are boring after the first couple of times you see them. Controls don't feel quite as tight because you are no longer superimposed onto a 2d background and feel more weighty. The biggest flaw however is the Antarctica shift mid game when you are suddenly playing as Chris and might have given Claire some of your best options for what you assumed was a final boss fight which totally caught me and many others off guard at that point in the game, there was a sudden difficulty spike that cockblocked many who bothered to get that far. It's because of this that I never actually completed the whole game until like 2 years ago despite watching a walkthrough years before that. The HD port as I mentioned earlier is noted to be very dark, like they toned down the lighting a bit but it really just effects visibility of the player who had to tweak it. It's also only playable on console unlike RE4 which got a new Steam release that fixed some of the old port's problems.

Now onto the good, the "why I think it's awesome" part. The aforementioned 3D environments and camera angles were neat, and a great experiment to push the series forward with. I know there are advantages to per-rendered backgrounds (less performance intensive and you can render them at the highest resolution possible before scaling them down to the standards resolutions) but I hold it that dynamic fixed camera angles are superior to static camera angles without abandoning a large part of what makes Resident Evil, Resident Evil. Despite the lack of enemy variety there was definitely more detail and thought put into how Zombie behave and they are at their best here. Despite the fact that Steve was a bumbling Canadian Leonardo DiCaprio, Alfred unnerved me. Imagine a cross dressing freak tormenting you and fucking up your final escape plans, being at the mercy of some loony freak who used to torture people to death is terrifying in it's own right. Especially when you realized he only was the head of the training facility through nepotism, and the fact that the Umbrella higher ups needed to dump him in some corner somewhere where he wouldn't be an issue. Though he ended up making me laugh more in the following years because Alfred memes always made him a clown fag joke character. The gameplay is also just harder than RE2 in general. RE2 is probably the easiest game of the 4 main games made in the original timeline before the writer died, you have way too much ammo even if you forgo grabbing any on the way to the station. CV is actually complete and much harder than the previous games without resulting to designing some enemies around a stupid dodge mechanic like RE3.

At the end of the day we may not agree on everything, but at least you're not a hyperbolic faggot like the other Anon.

Silent Hill 4 was hated simply because the core mainstream crowd of purists doesn't accept any game that doesn't star Alessa in any way shape or form.

It's actually really deep, plays off of a meta-narrative of the rise of the hikikimori and voyeurism (the first .gif is a nod to this, your gameplay even involves trying to spy on others outside your room) . It's also a Silent Hill game that the original Team Silent wanted to make outright scary.

The idea that something is watching is spooky. As animals, we've evolved the ability to pick up fear from watching our peers. When we watched our moms or siblings scream because of a spider, we learned that there's something about spiders that is to be feared. But what is the reason for that fear? It's not the fear of spiders, because we've never had a reason to fear them until we had learned they were feared.

The fear however isn't coming from the spider itself however. They might appear ugly, but when that fear was learned, it wasn't because the spider was threatening anyone. It was simply because there was an implied reason; and that reason is unknown. The fear of the unknown is naturally inbred into humanity so that we may acquire the ability to perceive threats from otherwise innocuous things.

That's what the video is playing on. There's a perceived threat, something that will likely kill you if you're not careful, something that is unknown, and worse yet– unknowable. Without anyone around, you have to rely on your own paranoia to identify threats, and you do so quite readily. That's why the knock at the door is so terrifying.

Here is the best thing to do with a jumpscare:

>game is a little spoopy

>jumpscare early on

>player will instantly suspect jumpscares for the rest of the game

>there are no more, everything else is leveraging on tension

>you are so busy expecting jumpscares that you miss the actual spoopy stuff the first time through

>second playthrough you find much more subtle things that plague you

One of the best examples is from PT. Everyone was so obsessed with the spooky ghost gal that most players missed out on more subtle things. For example, you can hear a radio/phone call that says pointless shit, but in the middle of it, suddenly lists off a series of numbers. Well, because it's a puzzle game, you will try to remember them, and a common manner to remember numbers may be to repeat them out loud over and over again as you wander around… only to eventually discover the killings and horrible things were done by a person who was said to be constantly repeating "a series a numbers over and over again like a type of mantra."

THAT is the layer of spoopy I'm looking for.
