What games let you play an ice mage/cryomancer and actually have it be useful?

Maybe I'm crazy but usually whenever ice is put in as an element in a game it's blue fire, aka just deals damage but is worse than the alternatives. Just the only upside usually being some pretty pathetic debuffs. Hell it almost always seems to just be a shittier version or something else, or is multiple things in the game crippled and then glued together.

About the best I can think of is Subzero.

a70004  No.15494602

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic lets you freeze enemies and shoot ice on the floor that they can slip on. Can make a platoon of orcs slide right off a cliff.

e8840c  No.15494666

I know this will result in Toddposting but Skyrim. Ice is probably the strongest of the basic elements as it has two fairly big debuffs of slowly down enemies and draining them of their stamina. This is a lot better than fire which gives enemies slip damage and deals increased damage if the enemy is on fire (this sucks because a lot of enemies resist fire, namely dragons, the iconic enemy of the game). And is way better than lightning because all lightning does is sap MP.

The ice slows enemies which is useful because it keeps enemies away from you for longer and the stamina drain means enemies won't get out many heavy attacks. It's so much better than the other basic elements it kept me from ever investing into a mage build for that game.

The main benefit to lightning is the faster projectile, I think it might even be hitscan. Plus Chain Lightning dual cast is one of the few genuinely fun things to do in that game. Shoot the ground next to an enemy and watch it ragdoll into the air when it dies because of the angle coming up from the ground.

>>15494577

In general, Ice does direct damage and trades the DOT fire has for slow effects. Depending on the game it might actually do higher damage on hit than fire at the cost of not doing damage over time, which is usually preferable. The most iconic, useful ice mage would probably be sorceress in Diablo 2, Frozen Orb was a pretty common build.

Also worth noting, mid-high level draugr resist frost (50%). Dragons may be the "iconic" enemy, but draugr are the most numerous and annoying.

8aa023  No.15494809

>>15494666

You're forgetting the game is skyrim, damn near everyone's a nord who also resists ice. I did try it once though, maybe it was because I didn't spend a ton of time playing but it felt like fire just dealt with the average enemy faster to the point I never needed to worry about power attacks.

>>15494675

Isn't frost mage like the worst one? I had one when I still played and got chewed out a few times for not being a fire mage.

>>15494754

See I don't get that. Yeah the typical thing is like blow snow at a dude and slow him down, but ice is a hard material. No game really has cryomancers impaling people with ice spikes, or even doing anything to do with terrain (Aside from Dark Messiah apparently). Maybe its because I play tabletops a good bit, but ice seems like a crazy versatile thing that no game uses.

Playing as Frost in Warframe might do it for you. You only get 4 abilities to use, but each one is pretty useful in its own way. Throw in ice modded weapons that can freeze enemies and shatter them into a thousand pieces for some more fun. But it's on the grindy side and getting Frost might take a while for a new player unless you have somebody helping you out. Useful for both solo play and team play when defending an objective or two.

The Tales of… games don't really have an ice specialist, but ice spells are good and certain annoying enemies are gladly weak to it, plus they looked neat. Freeze Lancer and Absolute could be nasty spells to cast or receive damage from.

I could also mention Rimururu from Samurai Shodown, if only because her Fatality with a giant ice hammer looked cool, no pun intended.

d75bfe  No.15496485

>>15494666

I think the reason that ice gets two debuffs is because more enemies are resistant to it, as others have said. It is the snow level of tamriel, after all. It's still fun to use ice spells though, especially modded ones.

thanks for fuck, multiplayer balance. luckily its not too hard to mod back in.

>The Tales of… games don't really have an ice specialist

Celsius says hello, though she's not usually playable outside of RM2 (though a summon spirit being playable at all to begin with, it's noteworthy she got picked), using her ToE "Greater Craymel" incarnation.

>Freeze Lancer and Absolute could be nasty spells to cast or receive damage from.

Former is a lot better in the 2D games, being a linear attacs that benefits from lack of player/enemy ability to free roam to shred across the field. Absolute's more of a fit for the 3D ones, being a radial AoE, but even then there's delay for the foe to manage to get out of range before it snares them.

Tree of Savior, even though it's a shitty game. Cryomancers have an ability that pulls in mobs and freezes them, which is extremely useful. They also have some OK damage despite being a low level job and have other utility, as well as being fairly tanky.

In Underrail you get a few good cryomancy powers from the metathermics class, which also gives you fire powers. If you invest a bit into it you get guaranteed long ass stuns with cryostasis, your regular cryokinesis attacks lower the target's max HP due to hypothermia and stuff like that.

There's like a hundred items and a hundred spells. They're about to add a 4th area and boss, and a pile of new enemies. Plus new supers. They added in the last update an NPC that will randomize your entire build for super-blind playthroughs. I don't play many roguelikes, but it's got a lot of stuff relative to others I've played like Risk of Rain. I'm not sure what you consider enough, though.

I like the series, but as of late I've been questioning more if I might just have shit taste. Anyhow, Berseria's got some weird "always free roam combat" compared to the usual "line of approach with optional free roam" (for the 3D games anyhow, minus Symphonia), and I always had some trouble trying to figure out how to really read the soul gauge and costs, beyond just min/max souls. Most of the rest of the series either utilizes straight TP as a resource (with gels to restore 30/60/100%), straight CC in a few games like Destiny PS2/DC and Graces (each action costs 1-4 CC with max CC determining how many actions can be taken in a combo; CC restores fairly fast on its own, but playing well can net mid-combo returns instead of needing to break combo/turtle), and mixed TP/CC style like the Xillias (each arte costs [X] TP, and every offensive action costs 1 CC out of the total; AC, as it's known there, restores fast once a combo breaks, while TP still uses gels to restore and activated skills to manage better). The real-time combat handles reasonably well enough in my opinion (and with Graces f, the combat is a major reason to play it, along with the skits, being the only sole-CC entry available in English, though in turn it's not an entry you're playing for a good story, as the writing's rather subpar even compared to Tales' usual plotting). But I've seen others over the years just deride the series as "button mash tier." I suppose whether or not its a good style of combat depends on who you ask.
