I feel like skyward sword is more of a game for the younger audience than anything. I'm just a 3D modeler who appreciates the 3D Zeldas more than the 2D Zeldas. Especially the most recent ones, given their scope and complexity. Given that I'll one day be making games that'll try to emulate them.

My absolute favorite because it had the most endearing romance between Link and Zelda (and of any game for that matter), my favorite artstyle (impressionism) that absolutely nails that dreamlike aesthetic, and was the first game that fully capitalized on the motion control promises. Making everything from the swordplay to the flying to everything in between the type of immersion that Twilight Princess (Wii's first Zelda game) should have been in the first place..

With SS having an experimental artstyle/gameplay + a very personal story, those are only the chief reasons of why I loved it so much.

Gameplay wise, it's the only open world game that doesn't make me want to kill myself. While the armor/hearts can be optionally upgraded and the weapons can break, this game thankfully lacks the one crap feature I fucking loathe in all open world games. An EXP/LVL up system. I just absolutely hate this rpg element to the deepest fiber of my being. It just drains all the skill from a game's challenges if grinding and being overleveled solves everything. While BotW may lack the same charm of something like Wind Waker, this game is undeniably my top inspiration for the type of gameplay I want to create. Beautiful open worlds you can fully explore, but unhindered by grindy EXP mechanics. Until I played it, I never knew how much I wanted this kind of game all my life.

I've emulated Wind Waker once, but that's not enough to formulate an opinion on the game. Anyways, my list is all over the place so I figured that I should explain that these are from my memories, and the game I most fondly remember playing is LA. I actually prefer the approaches to exploration in Zelda 1 and BotW to all the other Zelda's which are far to linear, but neither of them could fully articulate the vision the developers had for them.

Switch version has more plot and a better final boss than the Wii U version. but its the adventure maps that the real tricky fun stuff is at. It doesn't get all that difficult. It can get a bit stressful when the mission wants you to be ten places at once, but it's pretty easy, otherwise, assuming you're using a character with a decent level. Enemy hp can feel bloated as hell if you're too weak.

I'm only metioning the ones that I've played. I don't have hot takes on games that I haven't. My comments are mostly subjective.

Majora's Mask is my absolute favorite. If you examine the game mechanics in a vacuum then they seem pants on head retarded, but when they are all put together they make a great game. The unorthodox design, creepy visuals and haunting music make the game feel oppressive. This is one of my favorite games, and I'm not entirely sure if I have fun playing it. Failing to reach a goal within three days sets you back without any reward and even if you do get a key item, any good that was done for another person is lost. It feels simultaneously futile and hopeful. As a last note, the dungeons are fewer, but better designed.The snow temple with the pillar in the center is my favorite in the series.

Windwaker is my second favorite, which is odd because it's the polar opposite of Majora. It's super comfy, it's pleasant to see and the puzzles are piss easy. I suppose that I prefer when a game takes one aspect to the extreme as opposed to ending up in the middle ground.

Ocarina of Time is the one with the most universal appeal and didn't appeal to me personally. I enjoyed it, but not to the extent of the last two. The inconsistent time travel mechanics, Gerudo fortress and skultula hunt were the parts which irritated me. I felt that I had to fling shit at a wall and hope that something stuck. Those are only parts of the game and all in all it still holds up to day.

I got through the Legend of Zelda on the gameboy version. It didn't impress me very much, but for the the time of its release it was impressive. The one thing that I did like was how it expects you to just wander arounf and figure things out for yourself. I was able to blast through it by experimentation and never needed a guide.

I played Twilight Princess for a bit. I didn't enjoy it and didn't get very far. I felt that it was trying to be dark like Majora's mask but couldn't pull it off. The porn is alright.

That's exactly why it's good. Later Zelda games became more and more bloated with forced dialogue and cutscenes that get between you and the dungeon crawling/adventure. Zelda 1's simplicity makes it more fun to replay, especially since there's a lot of freedom in when you go to which dungeon or which items you pick up. Not to mention the 2nd quest mixing things up. ALttP feels like it's on rails in comparison, and its shitty story doesn't make up for the lack of freedom. Link's Awakening and the Oracle games might be more linear than ALttP, but they actually have interesting stories and NPCs to make up for it, and OoT is the best middle ground.

Zelda 1 was an actual adventure. You had to find everything on your own. You had to make your own map, your own notes, so on. It was the first Zelda I played and it was an experience unlike any other game I had ever played. It's certainly outweighed by a lot of mediocre decisions, but LttP was the beginning of the end. The map was detailed, bombable walls were marked with cracks and so on. Link to the Past introduced the formulas that were reused and overused and driven into the ground by every single damn game after that. Something like LA has an interesting story with interesting characters, and in particular, unique dungeons compared to LttP, and small stuff that I enjoy, like bombable walls with no indication, that you have to find by hitting with your sword. That in particular was a big part of why I loved Zelda 1, just looking at the map layout, trying to figure out where hidden rooms could be.

It feels like shit, not like an adventure. Wandering around burning random trees, bombing random walls to find secret entrances is not good gameplay. In contrast, there are loads of hidden heart pieces and other secrets that are actually fun to collect in Lttp that require the use of items in interesting ways and the whole world doesn't look 100% identical. Zelda 1 has 1 primitive tile set for all the dungeons and the whole map and the items basically do fuck all but give you an extra way to shoot, whereas in Alttp the items actually enable access to different areas giving you a reason to actually explore the world to find what the fuck you can get access to and collect. There are also several dungeons you can do out of order in Lttp. You're way exaggerating when you say it's on rails. Zelda's 1 world and dungeons are dogshit, bosses are dogshit, everything is dogshit. It's only good as a relic because at the time it came out there were no other games besides simple arcade style platformers on the NES.

TP was bad because the story shit kept getting in the way of the game, among other things. I like a lot of the things it did, but there's too much crap to wade through around those things. Tears are even worse than the Triforce shards, in my opinion, the art style is ugly as hell, especially for the majority of the characters, and the overworld is one of the biggest in the series, yet its design just wastes your time and there's not enough content to justify the size. The combat, dungeons, and minigames are great, but you have to slog through so much shit to get to them, all while your eyes are constantly offended by the muddy textures and people missing chromosomes.

Haven't played Link Between Worlds or Spirit Tracks and I have very little experience with Breath of the Wild. Phantom Hourglass as a game is among the likes of Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess for being piss easy. If I had to be critical I would say Link to the Past is the greatest, and Skyward Sword doesn't deserve a lot of the hate it gets.

I want Phantom Hourglass's concept redone, I enjoyed a lot of the ideas, it was just executed poorly. Also because Linebeck is one the best characters and needs to be used more.
