I have no knowledge about this series but I want to get into it. I was wondering if I should start with the PS1 games or skip to the PS2 trilogy

Do you like jets? Do you like arcadey combat because fuck reality? Do you like dramatic war stories filled with motherfucking heroes? This is the series for you

PS1 trilogy:

Ace Combat 1/Air Combat is okay

AC2 is good but it's fucking amazing on 3DS (Assault Horizon Legacy is a remake of 2)

AC3's international version is kind of crap. Project Aces's director has actually apologized for this, citing that localization was a difficult thing for them at the time

AC3's Japanese version is fucking great and there's a translation patch

PS2 trilogy: I don't have the /v/ recommendation chart image so I'll just quote it here "Lest you be blessed to find a better game than these"

AC4 lacks route select in favor of a damn good linear story. You will cry a little

AC5's story goes into black ops territory and has you fighting to uncover a shadow war while your superiors completely forget how a plane's black box works

AC0 goes into the past conflict detailed in 5. Belkans want their clay

others:

AC6 on X360. Haven't played it due to not having a 360

ACX on PSP is pretty good but not amazing

AC Assault Horizon series:

ACX2 Joint Assault on PSP is not terrible but it was the first to take place in the real world, opening the door to the series's greatest shame:

AC Assault Horizon "Hey Project Aces, make the next one like Call of Duty" "No" "Come on" "Okay, but you'll regret it"

If you don't like the newbie-friendly jet controls that autolevel you, etc, you you can almost always set realistic control in the menu

Friendly reminder for those wanting to play AC3, the Japanese version has a fan-translation as of a couple years ago due to Namco having cut out the plot and some levels for the western release.

Actually got a question for you since you seem more familiar: Is there a reason AC0 tend to be a good 2-4 times the price of 4 or 5? I know piracy is an option, but it's just something I've been curious about since noticing that's the case where I am. Did it not sell well in comparison, is it just that much higher demand, a better game, whatever? 4 and 5 are about $4-8 each where I live, but 0's been close to $20 in comparison and slowly rising.

Start any franchise chronologically

Both Ace Combat 1 and 2 are great arcade games, 2 specially.

And then there's Electrosphere

>tfw can't emu AC4 and have been postponing my playthrough of it indefinitely until I get a fat ps2

Honestly, it's probably just scalpers. That and I think it didn't get a Greatest Hits release while the other two did

>Honestly, it's probably just scalpers.

Wouldn't shock me, but $20 is still pretty low as far as games being scalperbait or whatever, to the point I'd have to question if it's really worth their effort to try their luck with. In comparison, saw a copy of BWT priced at $150 while out earlier.

>That and I think it didn't get a Greatest Hits release while the other two did

Makes me wonder why it didn't sell as well then.

>Makes me wonder why it didn't sell as well then.

Probably because it was competing with the Xbox 360, which launched the previous year.

It didn't get the hype that God of War 2 and Okami got so as a swan song for the PS2 it underperformed

Ah, being that late on the system would kind of make sense, especially with the PS3 coming out later that year. Though at the same time, the PS3 having it's own NOGAEMS issue for a while, I'd think there'd have still been a good amount of interest in sixth gen until things got better. But I suppose that's more hindsight than anything.

Haven't played since I switched to pc flight simulation games.

I recommend anyone who loves Ace combat to do this, IL 2-1946 runs on a toaster and a quality stick is 100$.

Ace combat is like a arcade racer while combat flight simulators are like Gran Turismo.

They look pretty boring, but it is actually extremely rewarding to learn how to fly and even landing a aircraft can be fun, like riding a bicycle.

There's isn't a much a upgrade tree or something, you get better by simply playing it more and more and doing research.

I'm not saying to not play ace combat, but if you guys have a PC and some spare cash for even a used stick I recommend giving it a try.

They don't have complex storylines or soundtracks but they are extremely deep, like a racing simulation.

I recommend Lock on modern air combat 3 and il-2 1946 first, they are very cheap and not so complicated as the other games (they don't have cockpits with every button clickable).

>AC4

>Dat mission where you directly engage Yellow Squadred for the first time. Took me 15 minutes of chasing locks and evading before I got a splash.

>AC5

>Dat Tom Clancy mission where transport planes take over an air port in the capital.

>Dat race against time mission to save Edge.

>Dat entire storyline.

>AC0

>Demon of round table.

>Pixy as wingman

>"Here comes the snow" to flamingo music

It's all good.

>no ps2

>emulators still shit the bed

>PSP has no second analog stick

Why the fuck did they only put one stick on the PSP?

I just started this series for the first time with Assault Horizon Legacy and I knew I was missing out, but not this much. I think the game's a little easy, but that might be from playing on normal mode.
