Grandia II is basically based on the Anniversary edition, but also adds JP text support and "fixes audio/video desync".
As for the final surprise, the collection is not coming out in Japan despite the fact that both games will have a switchable EN/JP text setting. Well, good for those wanting to learn JP I guess?
Grandia I was one of my 'holy grails' to get in my pirate laden 3rd world land back in the early 2000s. And when I finally was able to get it, it turns out it was the JP version. I still managed to push onwards, learning initial bits of Japanese along the way. I couldn't progress because the 2nd disc was badly damaged and hanged up early on. Couple years later I finally found an English copy.

If it was Legend of Dragoon, it wouldn't be on the Switch, or even be the same companies involved, being that it was Sony owned and developed. Speaking of which, I'm still not clear on why they're taking a series that was formerly for Sega and Sony systems (with Grandia II also having been PC) and exclusively putting it on Nintendo for the remaster.
>>15475448
Landstalker series was Climax Entertainment, some of whose staff went to form Matrix Software (who made Alundra I and II, Dual Hearts, Avalon Code, got stuck as Square's port bitch for half a decade, and now make the neverevers that are Omega Labyrinth).

Shame the PS2 port of the second was apparently abysmal. Combine with not having much reason to get a Dreamcast nor knowing anyone with one, and a toaster-tier computer, it's a game I've had to write off. And I don't have a Switch either (and fuck NoA, while I'm at it), so this doesn't necessarily help.

Seriously though, why did Ubisoft pick that one up to begin with? Did it review well in Japan somehow? Were they forced to due to standing GameArts relations (Grandia I in PAL, Grandia II, Lunar Legend across the entire west)? I just find it baffling.

That must've been it. They probably had a contractual obligation to release Gamearts titles up to a certain point. I guess after Dragon Shit was finished, Maybe that's why GA went to Square to publish Grandia III. But that's speculation.

That still doesn't make that much sense though. Between them handling Grandia I for PAL and Lunar: Dragon Song, other companies had their hands on Silpheed: The Lost Planet, Gungriffon Blaze, and Bomberman Generation, the former two being Working Designs and the latter being Majesco (Vivendi in PAL). At least Enix and subsequently Square-Enix publishing Grandia Xtreme and III worldwide makes some semblance of sense: Enix owned the rights natively to the series going back to Grandia II on the Dreamcast.
Doesn't explain why they'd pick up LDS, or why Marvelous would actually deem it worth clearing for overseas fans to suffer through enjoy.

I would assume it's just going to have the existing scripts ported over, for better or worse. Most companies would rather just buy the rights to prior work if they pick up a port to save time and money on their end, unless the prior translation is really egregiously bad (and even that may not be enough of a factor for some).

The existing Grandia script is fine, there's no poz since it's from a nicer era for JRPGs. They'll reuse it for sure - the only changes in the translation were about alcohol: The pub that 'only opens at night' became a 'café' (seriously) and Jin the drunk old man became 'Java' the coffee chugger.
I'm expecting all of these will be intact:

Japan already saw the games rereleased for the PS3 out there. I think they were based on the PS1 and PS2 versions though. Part of why I'm curious as to the state of their PS2 port, as they have the entire series (minus Parallel Trippers, obviously) on their PSN while we've only had 1 and 3 on account of Grandia II PS2 being shit. Not the same as a remaster, obviously, but still. Or maybe it's a series deemed to have more of a western base, or the version they might get natively could wind up being for the PS4 instead.

I honestly don't get how they could have felt it was acceptable to do, outside of sheer laziness, being cheapskates, or having massive contempt for fans of a series the western branch wasn't wanting to push more. The original being a notoriously bad script and all, having a better one on the port would have made for selling point. And all that in an era when, as competition to the BoF ports, Square was actively working to revise scripts for their RPG ports to not be as shit.

It does seem to have a noticeably strong base in the west at least, despite being fairly hit or miss from what I've seen over the years. But I'm not sure if it's popular because of its actual quality, or if it was marketed to popularity back in the day. Doesn't surprise me that there's some demand for a remake (though at modern era quality, who knows if that would actually be good), though obviously this is the wrong thread to lament the absence in, being that it has nothing to do with GA or GungHo.
>>15479745
Even in Japan, huh? While I'm not big on Working Designs, I always found it a bit odd that neither PS1 Lunar had made it onto the NA PSN; it's not like GW didn't retain rights to some of their old stuff, given that Alundra, Arc the Lad series, and Vanguard Bandits made it up there (though it might be worth considering the first two are SCEJ owned in Japan). But it's odd to hear that even in Japan rerelease is apparently iffy, and having only the second game makes less sense than having neither. Did the PSP remake of the first game have a PSN version out there they might have wanted to push instead?
While on the topic, something I've never understood has been why there's been such difference in the PSN PS2 JRPG offerings between the west and Japan. Obviously PAL is fucked over (that's not unusual), but it seemed like there is very little overlap between what we got rereleased in NA and what Japan got. I don't know if it's just difference in preference, and clearly what we never had come west we wouldn't be seeing rereleased, but why did Japan see no rereleases of the PS2 SMT or Persona games? Why did they get Rogue Galaxy on the PS3 but we had to wait until the PS4? Why did they get WA5 but apparently have had no interest in a rerelease of the third? That sort of stuff. With PS1 PSN JRPG offerings, if we got a game rereleased, chances were they got it too, so it just seems like a weird disconnect.

Working Designs lost those rights either before or during the time they closed down (good riddance btw). Ireland never did the footwork to reattain said rights when he created Gaijinworks (again, to our benefit), which by then XSeed had long-since snapped up the rights to distribute Lunar. Thus you'll never see the old Working Designs localization on the English PS Network. It's all contract disputes. Ireland also hates the XSeed localization and won't do business. So again, never ever.
Japan-side, iirc it had something to do with Sony's policies about games being on the online store. Can't recall exactly. Trust that anytime you don't see a title in Sony's store, it's usually bullshit bureaucracy or it's a licensing fight taking place.

My memory is weak on who in GameArts designed Dragon Shit, but I do know he died before that point. Japan Art Media were the helm runners for Dragon Shit, though GA staff did assist (to what extent I don't know because my moon isn't good enough to pick through the various JPN wikis). I'd heard the PSP version was hit or miss, but I guess the cancermonger wouldn't like that XSEED didn't buy up the rights to his teams "creative" writing. >Trust that anytime you don't see a title in Sony's store, it's usually bullshit bureaucracy or it's a licensing fight taking place.
Even for shit Sony owns directly? Because they own the entire Wild Arms series in Japan, so that shouldn't be stopping them from rereleasing 3 out there.

Yup. Graphical asthetic, 1:1 porting issues, shift in management thoughts or philosophy decide where titles go. It's why Wild ARMs is a moba, now. And why Wild ARMs 3rd is on PS4 as a trophy-supported game instead of just a 1:1 PS2 port for the PS3. It's also why WA4 and 5 are nowhere to be seen anywhere on any iteration of the PS Network.

I'd at least heard that with the PS3, it was a bit of a pain trying to get PS2 games working right as a PSN rerelease since they'd culled the native compatibility (and thus rereleases would need to play reasonably decently on any PS3 model), compared to how the PS4 apparently has been. I think I've heard something about XSEED having tried to port the PS2 ones over, but it proved too much of an issue. Also, 5 is on the PSN, just that it's only on the JP PS3 store as of 2014.
