With TGS starting in just a few days there's been just a little more information about the new Umihara Kawase game coming out. It's apparently not like any other Umihara Kawase game, but rather a metroidvania style platformer where you take on quests.
I'm okay with this. I think that's one of the biggest problems with metroidvanias is they're far too rigid and the core movement mechanics tend to be very poor, with additional ones being just as rigid. The gameplay in the UHKS games naturally lends itself to skill based mastery before simple solution insertion. I'm really curious to see where the game play is taken. The game is also being considered for other platforms besides the Switch after launch. I really like the look they're establishing and Kawase's new style is really cute, a big improvement over the n64-tier 3D model of Sayonara.
There will be more shown soon.

Since there are already many other games in the original style I do not mind a change. I'm very interested to see how they translate the game play to something more exploration focused.

I dunno, I just feel like everything tries to do Metroidvania now of days and Umihara Kawase was always about challenging levels and beating your time on them. I don’t think that gameplay style will lend itself well to a metroidvania but we’ll see. I’m a little disappointed though. I planned on getting it day 1 but seeing as it’s a quest based metroidvania there will be things I’ll have to read to progress so I’ll have to wait for a localized version which may suck pretty bad.
Not the best news to go to sleep on, but I’ll just have to see how it pans out.

Nothing yet, but considering it's English/Chinese/Japanese it may just be internally handled by Success. I am unsure of Saizensen's involvement.

Hopefully so, I’ll wait till day 2 to pick it up just in case now. I’m a little less confident in the game, but I still think it should be pretty fun. Guess worst case scenario happens and the localization is pozzed to shit I can just import a Japanese copy and use an English guide.

The Metroidvania news and thirst/hunger info puts me off a bit, I really preferred the structure from the original games especially the way they handled in Sayonara Umihara Kawase
But I'll give it a chance.

Yeah, we’ll see how it goes. I’m put off for the same reasons, but I do like metroidvanias, just not to keen on Umihara Kiwase being turned into one. Still, I love the dev and their previous games so I’ll also give it a chance.

All the better metroidvanias are also about speed running though. And mastering the level design and your abilities to quickly navigate through the world. I bet there will be a bunch quests where you have to bring a sandwich that is going to spoil or something quickly to someone.

More likely Sushi, as Kawase works with the preparation by day. Swinging by night. Maybe some 3AM tofu deliveries along the beat of the rising sun. None of which I would be opposed to.

Speedrunning is a meme challenge applied to a game after mastering it, not to the core gameplay. No Castlevania or Metroid game encourages you to rush through the levels (at least none of the ones which named the fucking genre).

I never have that much of an issue with that sort of thing. Sometimes you gotta die a lot to git gud, and if it’s that much of an issue just git gud, delete your save, then do a run trying not to die that much.
I cant even imagine the amount of times I died in classic mega man before I got gud around 3.

It's probably not really a "Metroidvania" since Kawase's movement is already so powerful that it's almost impossible to add upgrades like you'd find in Metroid. An exploration based game might be interesting, and since we know it's still Saizensen working on it I'm hopeful about this. The style's different but her new look is still cute. Kawase for smash when?

I don't think they'll ever recapture that beautiful pencil case droppings weirdo of a game that was the original, but the mechanics are amazing and I'm glad to see them still going ahead with the franchise. This series died once, came back, died again, and now it's going bigger and I'm just happy for them.

I just want to know more about the hunger and thirst meter, then I'm 100% happy. The Hunger meter seems to only drop when you get damaged but the Thirst meter did fucking nothing during the preview.

It was a little odd that the thirst meter didn't seem to do anything. I've really got no idea how they're going to use that, especially since I don't remember any of the concept art of the food items including any drinks.
It's pretty wild that you can actually damage the tadpole with your hook now. I wonder if good players will just be able to rodeo it to death in one shot?

I fucking hope so since that will speed up boss fights a lot. The boss fights were the only thing I never really cared about in the series, like they were fine but they slowed the pace of the game down to a grinding halt

Now I look at it further, the art is a little bland. I like her new design, but the backdrop has more of a generic fantasy vibe and less of the surreal Japanese look of the prior games. The environments could just be more varied though.

Yeah, it definitely isn’t my favorite but it isn’t the worst thing. Like I said, it just looks like a straight ripoff of Cave Story and I wonder if that’s what they are going for with the decision to make it a Metroidvania.
Either way it’s the gameplay that matters and so far it looks like what we’d expect. We’ll see if they can add anything interesting or new to the formula though I would have been fine with more of the same, but then, I suppose we’ve had several games that have done the same thing with slight differences.

I liked the surrealism of the other games, but I'm OK with the way this looks (even if they might as well put "Featuring Sue from Cave Story" on the box). It's OK for them to be doing something "Fresh" though. Maybe it isn't going to be the Mario 64 of Kawase games but it should be fun in its own way.
There are still things I need to do in the other games, too, so if it's a different spin on it it might be relaxing in between trying to master the hardest parts of Shun and Sayonara.
