If only I could count the amount of times I wanted to piss in the Cheerios of some stodgy old irrelevant fuckwad and the starry-eyed kid interviewing them.
And guess what, they succeeded. In fact they succeeded so much that Hollywood is now overshadowed by their industry and getting smaller every year. The games industry is now more "Hollywood" than Hollywood ever was. Horrible business ethics, abuse of personnel, constant fucktarded management decisions made in a vacuum of C-level executives in a closed conference room which override every creative and design instinct in each of their subordinates. The only thing missing is old Jewish producers forcing female actresses to suck their cock for a role, and the only thing that saves us from that is that women don't want to make fucking video games.

Nerd Culture was becoming popular long before then. Pretty much the moment people realized that you could make serious fucking cash with technology, then "geeks" were in high demand. It started with widespread recognition of "icons" like Bill Gates, and spread to the early .com boom when everybody and their brother was putting up websites to make a little cash. Geeks weren't cool, but you didn't really want to piss them off. You wanted to employ them. Being generally soft touches themselves, as well as a decade of being groomed for producing mass-market goods and services - it was only a matter of time before it reached this point.
I wouldn't blame Bazinga theory. That show is too insipid to make anyone want to emulate or connect with any of the characters. A large part of the humor of that show was in having the audience laugh at "quirky" geeks and their culture, not with them - using that one blonde bitch as a straight man for their antics. (Compare it to early Futurama which had some good geek humor)
If anything really punctuated it - it was the iPhone. Apple had long been cultivating a hipster audience of ready-made soygolems with their "think different" campaigns and angling their marketing towards the "creative" crowds since they couldn't compete in utility against Linux or Microsoft in the business space. The popularity of the iPhone gave these chucklefucks validity in the mass market, and the casuals looked up to the "Apple Geniuses" who passed themselves off as tech gurus (despite being a shitty easily controlled closed system). To a lesser extend, I guess the iPod was a precursor to this - but that didn't have it's own OS the way the iPhone and iPad did. You still had to use windows, since it wasn't worth owning a Mac to load music onto your mp3 player.
Steve Jobs/Apple actively pandered to progressives, hipsters, and "artists" - and brought them into the tech space. They were always a bit of a running joke, until the iPad/iPhone - when they gained legitimacy in the eyes of the masses.
The other contributing factor, is social media - which is a whole other rant in itself, but the short version is that by stripping away anonymity - they've made every individual their own brand. A brand that must be cultured and marketed - whether to make money as a personality (PewDiePie, etc), to get a job (employeer spying), to keep family and friends from seeing your shitposting, whatever the case may be. It has created a perfect storm of mob hysteria (amplified by retweets), peer pressure, and all the cancer that comes with focus testing and marketing in the business world - now applied to the individual. There's an episode of Black Mirror called Nosedive that highlights the problem, though far from being a dark ironic twist on a mundane aspect of everyday life, it's pretty much unfiltered reality at this point.

When things get popular enough among a core audience, a culture starts to come from it. Once that culture starts growing, suddenly it becomes very interesting to normans and the just HAVE to be part of it. So they slowly force their way in and start complaining about things they don't understand and start whining that the culture doesn't cater to normans. Thing start to change to suit them and before long, the normans far outnumber the core group. At that point, the normans have essentially won and there's nothing left for the core so they move to some other niche interest. That next niche is only safe for so long too though.
