I don't know if you've noticed, but the Mobile market is trumping old vidya in terms of income because of three main reasons:

3) It creates a competitive aspect that draws people to play against each other or look up leaderboards or idolize certain players and buy the product they're advertising - mobile games tend to be multiplayer or have some shady ranking systems with your friends so that they skinner box you into becoming better or paying to pretend you are.
E-sports follows the same logic of all the three points for mobile. Large crowds of normalfags and kids watching high level play in a safe for work environment full of ads and sponsors with a minimum entry fee in both time and effort.
