I actually thought the civil court case was refreshing even if they fucked it up and made it another "Phoenix loses because Maya is kidnapped" episode. I also enjoyed the case where you have to handle a witness with Dissociative Identity Disorder. It was also somewhat interesting that the father of the dancer girl has that condition where he can't recognize faces and has to rely on what kind of clothes people wear. I think that could have been handled better, though. All in all I thought SoJ was pretty fresh in what they attempted to do.

While I can agree with you on the physical part, and even then she didn't really change much, I was really disappointed. What was the point of re introducing Maya after 12 years of absence from a GBA standpoint if she's almost the same as she was 9 years ago? And that flashback doesn't count

It is stale. The 3DS games were super gay and both Apollo and Athena a shit characters with shit gimmicks in shit stories.
We'd need to go back to Phoenix and Maya or maybe back to Edgeworth and the thief girl whose name escapes me at the moment.
I feel the games started to really only focus on the cases and everything else has been brushes aside. Where in the original trilogy you could interact with next to any object or person and actually get information, useful or not, the 3DS games rush you through the story, even telling you when you're done investigating everything rather than having you move around and make sure you got what you need.

Also the only thing I really worry about is where do they go now? Like, technically isn't Maya going to be able to just solve lots of crimes with spirit channeling now that she's back in full power?
Also I liked DD, not my favorite but it hit all right notes, and 5th case was really fun.
>>15456357
I don't like that, I'll admit youtube was what got me into the series like 10 years ago but part of the fun is in "solving" the mysteries yourself and it's not the same when you watch someone else. That's why I still managed to have fun playing the first game despite having already watched it.

4c3fa5 No.15464300
DD sucked but they really found their rhythm with SoJ.
The franchise lives and dies on the plot, and DD really fucked up. Introducing Athena when Apollo was still underdeveloped and forcing the team to deal with Phoenix as an attorney was a huge mistake. SoJ rectified this in part by removing Phoenix from the agency to deal with legal issues abroad – something that other characters like Franciska have already done – and gave us an interesting setting in Ku'rain. Making Apollo and Athena carry the agency by themselves back at home was a great choice since it forced them to develop, and dropping Apollo at the end of the game was even better. He's fairly unpopular and his backstory is stupidly convoluted.
Moving forward into AA7 there are two real issues:
>Working with Athena as the only other attorney since she's not a very strong character
She's marginally less annoying than Apollo, but her relationship with Blackquill isn't a very compelling. They're going to have to give her some kind of crisis to overcome without quitting the agency since Phoenix needs at least one protege.
>Introducing something new to keep the formula fresh
The legal system breaking down has already been done, going back in time to Mia has already been done, jury system has already been done, adding new partners has been done twice. Going abroad could work again but it would feel like a rehash.
They could stand to expound on the jury system but they've completely dropped that plot thread for whatever reason.
I have a pet theory on what they'll do next – a new partner joins the office under Athena, she treats them like a little sibling, and it turns out they're the criminal in the final case.

Official Ranking:
AA5 <<< AA4 =< AA2 (is higher by virtue of having a great final case) << AAI1 =< AA1 (higher at least by virtue of being the first one) < AAvsPL (bar the stupid Laytonesque ending) < AA6 < AA3 < AAI2 < Ghost Trick
Haven't played any of the 'Dai' spin-offs, so can't judge.
That said, I've come to form a more complicated opinion about Apollo Justice, especially taking the ending in consideration. It actually feels like an attempt to deconstruct (sorry for using the word) the narrative and the black/white dichotomy of the AA series, albeit it falls flat, but the idea is there. Even the subdued colors and music of AJ hint at this, as if AA1-3 were more of a fairy-tale, with AA4 snapping you back into reality. It's some interesting shit. Too bad it didn't accomplish that much and then AA5 made the seeds planted by AA4 a complete joke, reminiscent of a saturday-morning cartoon (far from the only reason for AA5 being that low, though).

1f4ec1 No.15481254

I hardly care about it being an 'adventure' game. All it amounts to is very basic pixel-hunting in all the games of the series.
The only thing I remotely care about gameplay-wise is cross-examinations and them actually making you think for at least a little without being too stupid. But most games in the series deliver on that more or less except for AA5.
It's got one of the best and most ambitious stories in the series, with no 'ups-and-downs' or 'third case syndrome' or god-awful pacing.
e4c84f No.15483197
>>15481254
To retiterate, I do care about cross-examinations and general 'logical' segments handled well quite a lot, as they create a certain 'tension' which seeps into the story itself and helps me stay engaged with the narrative.
AA5 having god-awful logic segments contributed to my enjoying its story the least.
At the same time, I don't expect it to be a full-on adventure game and AAI2 delivers on what it should as part of this particular series, even going as far as meshing several different mechanics at once (all of them being a bit underutilized, but that's also par for the course for the series).
(Coudn't post for the whole day for some reason).

Well, the first thing would be to introduce a dynamic campaign. You should be able to fail, miss evidence, or win/fail in a short/longer period of time. I also know that in Ace Attorney lore, the jurist system was abolished, but if they could find a way to bring it back, you could do jury selection as part of pre-trial. There could also be a versus gamemode where you and a friend can play against each other in a short, one-day trial.
Another interesting thing that will never ever be implemented is a murder system where you kill a victim in a particular way and upload it online, exactly like what they do in nuHitman.

I'm sure if the procedural generation is good enough, you could pull something off. The trickiest thing would be character design as well as having the computer correlate testimony and evidence, which is one of the reasons why I think they should do a system like Hitman 2016's contracts mode.

This. Some of the best moments in the series are the alternate bad endings like the justified self-defense plea in JFA and the Ema going to jail in Rise from the Ashes. The series can be painfully linear – they should definitely have a dedicated bad ending route for trials.
>miss evidence, or win/fail in a short/longer period of time.
I like the idea of being able to win trials within a day but I don't ever think that they'll do this. The amount of writing that they'd have to do to make this work would be enormous.
Missing evidence sounds interesting at first glance but if people starting missing a case-winning piece of evidence because of a pixel hunt they'd be salty as hell. It'd also be a nightmare in trial because you'd get the urge to reset if you fail an objection. Rather than think outside of the box, the first instinct would be 'Fuck, back to the investigation phase.' Investigations themselves would be anxiety-ridden because of all the paranoia about missing things.

https://files.catbox.moe/31y8u2.zip

All the evidence you need to prove your client innocent is eventually produced and during the trial, but being thorough in investigating will allow you to complete the trial more quickly, find contradictions in testimony that otherwise would go unnoticed, and accuse the real culprit. Of course, there would be some indicator that you have an ample amount of evidence. There'd be some inner monologue and the protagonist would say to themselves either "I'm completely unprepared for tomorrow's trial," "I think that's a good amount of evidence," and "My case is air-tight" so you're not going around in circles. It would also be cool to have a world-timer. Each movement you do takes up a certain amount of time, so you have to choose which leads to follow.
Another feature that would be nice would be to organize evidence by who you retrieved it by, the time it was retrieved, and to be able to organize testimony and evidence into a timeline.

You've probably already heard the story of how the autistic management ran the vidya server into the ground with their feminine personality politics. They drove away anyone with better managerial skills or technical skills with their frothing retardation, boys pretending to be girls, witchhunts and backbiting, and wondered why the community gradually shrank to only particularly vile people.
And why for that matter did they ever let a middle aged feminazi take the reins towards the end, when it was obvious from the start she was only interested in feeling important? At that point, people should have realised that there was a cycle of nepotism between people who really ought to have permabanned, and the incompetent mods.
Well, at least it's over. I say that with regret, because the first year was great, and there were lots of decent people around, even if the moderation was a train wreck. It was when neets, and people from noname countries in eastern europe took too much of an interest in it, and decided to make the game their own personal escape from reality, that the community degraded into /v/tier constant hostility and paranoia, because without a moderation willing to remove them - and in this case most of the moderation should have been removed from the start - these people ruled the roost.
