What are some video games that you think are very quality, but for some reason you couldn't really play through them? For me it would be the Thief games, although I think they are very good games, filled with quite thought out mechanics, great atmosphere and very good levels, I couldn't really play the game until the very finish for two main reasons, that play into one another.

First of all, the games are just simply far too fucking tense for me. I know that sounds stupid, but I feel like I'm getting a fucking heart attack while playing them this game is scarier than any horror game I played, and the guards have scared me more than I really find enjoyable. I feel that I'm too bad at stealth to play through those games properly, but improving myself enough feels more stressful than it is fun for me. Though I would probably be more likely to try to finish it if not for all the ruin-plundering, which makes the game even more overly tense for me because of the slightly confusing outlay the ruins often have and the shit-pants inducing things that are there.

What are some games that you feel about similairly /v/?

I will need to play that game, maybe it will be an RPG that will change my weird distaste to WRPGs. I don't even know why I don't seem to like them, they are games that seem like I would like for all they do, but at the same time I just often don't seem to be having much fun with them.

>First of all, the games are just simply far too fucking tense for me.

It's a reasonable issue.

There were some roguelikes I've beaten that would become so tense at times it got genuinely unpleasant.

There is nothing wrong with this technically, but sometimes it's just not worth it for a game.

You know how sometimes people seek out a comfy RPG? It's like the antithesis of that feeling.

You never get a chance to smell the flowers, and there is this sour feeling you are doing actual work.

It almost feels like a redpill on adventuring, which IRL would be a terrible way to live. The anti-LARP.

This with most RPGs in general. I know games are "time wasters" or whatever, but I actually feel guilty and like Im wasting time with most RPGs. I also just find them way too boring. The only way I can get into it is if I really enjoy the story, lore, and characters. If my character in an RPG is just a silent husk for me to play, Im already out.

There was only two turned based rpgs that I enjoyed and even that was because of a gimmick they had with the turns. Even then, one of them sorely under preformed and left me wanting a hell of a lot more than the shit dev could have ever given.

Dragon's Dogma

I know there's a good game in there somewhere, I can feel it, but the combat just feels like shit, the "climbing on monsters" is fun a couple of times but soon becomes a chore, weapon and magic skills are all over the place, the balance is fucked, the game is obviously missing a ton of content.

I just couldn't grok Dragon's Dogma.

I find it extremely difficult to like games that have AI that feels wonky and unnatural for the setting rather than some barrier. I hated playing Thief and Deus Ex because of this. STALKER's AI was not disappointing, but that game requires a certain amount of investment that I can't give. I've come to accept that games are time-wasters, so I try to chose ones that will enhance my life like simulators or puzzles.

>this game is scarier than any horror game I played

Sounds like you didn't even get to Down in the Bonehoard, when the game starts making an actual genre shift to horror elements. Fucking tons of unkillable zombies. Stealth properly or die. In the later levels Thief has more creepy horror shit. Thief 3 probably tops out in the horror department though, courtesy of the "Robbing the Cradle" level.

Personally Half Life series never really appealed to me. I like arena shooters but the other kinds of FPS just don't really do it for me.

>>15454214

Have you played Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri? It's got a lot more going for it than the average 4X. I'd rate it as the best 4X ever.

>>15452702

Nah, Obsidian is kinda known for its combination of dull and plodding gameplay combined with good writing and quest design. I'm not a fan of most Obsidian productions for that reason. Pro tip if you ever play KotOR 2 (another game with good writing and tons of plodding, lengthy combat-heavy level segments in a game where the combat isn't that fun), get fucking Force Speed asap. You will want it just for the movement speed bonus. Later on it's also a must-have for bonus attacks (unless you are going full-blown force magician and attacking with force powers all the time, but you will want that double-speed walking anyway).

>>15455368

There's no RPG system in STALKER. Your accuracy is determined by your gun, aiming and stance. The starting guns are bad, scopes make it much easier to land shots, and aiming for the head is very important.

>Fire Emblem

Way too reliant on RNG. I've played almost every game in the series by now except the DS ones but I hate all of them except for Sacred Stones. There are simply too many enemies, the enemies are too strong (because the game expects you to know that you must use the arena to grind or else you will surely lose) and it seems like the only way to get gud is by buying the strategy guide that holds all the information the game decides to withhold from you.

>Etrian Odyssey

Too grindy. Couldn't sit through this garbage any longer than the first few floors of a stratum. You grind so you can beat the floor's resident FOE in order to continue but then by the time you get to the next floor you're underpowered again and must grind. Nevermind the fact that you almost forced to either use the one winning strategic team lineup or you lose, plain and simple.

>Bravely Default

Same problem. Expects you to grind and then beat a hard boss and then you're underleveled again. Buy the strategy guide to get gud, goyim!

>Xenoblade Chronicles 2

I hate this shitty game so much but the only reason I am playing it is for the girls. The combat is so fucking boring that - and I am not even kidding - I've fallen asleep 'playing' that 'game' more than twice now. The worlds are 'large' yet empty, and even when you're overleveled, combat takes much too long against even weak enemies. Also has a similar problem of the difficulty curve rises exponentially for each boss. The grunts are easy as fuck but then you get to the boss who is dramatically tougher, requiring you to grind even more to stand a chance.

0bedb5  No.15456302

>>15456287

I see, but still, by the time I get a gun with a scope it still just doesn't have the accuracy, yet an enemy with the same gun seems to have no problem killing me in 3 or 4 shots.

I just don't think it's the type of game for me sadly. I don't get much fun from having to creep along, hiding, and peekshotting everything. At it's worst I'll take on an entire group of bandits behind one tree trying to headshot all of them and trying to change cover means almost certain death. I have to wonder if I don't play it right.

Any Paradox GSG. Tutorials are never good and you are just left to work so much shit out for yourself or look things up before you even get to play the game. Once you "get" a new mechanic, there's something else behind that mechanic that doesn't let you do the thing you wanted to do. I want something larger and more in depth than Total War, but not something where I spend more time reading about what to do than playing.

I think some people don't understand this thread. If you think a game is "trash", then it doesn't fit here.

As for me, I'm gonna have to mention Thief 1 too. Yes, the "zombies and magic" reason. Morrowind too, kind of. Though it has a lot of great things about it - the skills are just too unbalanced. You almost can't play thief classes. Sneaking and pickpocket just suck. Lockpicking is outclassed by "open chest scroll". And to clear the first dungeon of the main quest (the one with the centurions), you have to get your hands dirty. Can't sneak past them, so it forces your thief into being a warrior anyway - not good for roleplaying…

There are a shitload. Most RPGs, these days. I tend to binge games for a while and then get bored and go to something else. Made it to the 2nd act of Divinity: OS 2, then never touched it again. Morrowind, made it halfway and then never got back to it - and that was the furthest on probably a half dozen attempts. New Vegas, figured I'd do a bunch of the DLC before wrapping up main quest, then ended up never going back to it.

And then there are games where I just don't have the autism anymore. I spent years in high school playing Dorf Fort and can still read the default ANSI tileset, but I can't touch that game anymore.

Last game I actually sunk my teeth into for a long period of time was Kenshi. Last game I actually completed was DX:MD.

Webm unrelated.

Did you get past Garbage in stalker? Enemies will flinch on heavy damage, but you should be going for headshots anyway.

Honestly, just install the Autumn Aurora mod. Damage and balance is nicely fine-tuned, it's challenging, it looks amazing, and it doesn't go TOO far from vanilla. Mostly new guns added, as well as the basic shit every mod has like repair kits. It's fairly polished, and I had a ton of fun with it.

No idea how matchmaking worked on consoles, but PC had server browser and I never had trouble finding randoms up until they shut down the servers. As for exploits, I rarely ever met anyone using those unless we all agreed to just fuck around. People enjoyed the game too much to kill the fun during a match. It had so many intricate mechanics, like listening in on the other team's mics or headshotting mercs to disable their huds temporarily.

Besides, what people usually praise is the singleplay, and as far as that goes, it's as good as it can get. It takes all the mechanics of Thief (light, sound and quick deaths when spotted) and puts them in a modern spy thriller setting with similarly cocky protagonist. What's not to love.

Valkyria Chronicles. Its a mediocre turn-based strategy game that doesn't have good gameplay. The story was ok, but everything else sucked. The only reason I beat the damn game was just to see what happens at the end. I don't get why people would play it again or give it a sequel then another one and then another one. I get that a lot of people like because of the fan service or waifus or whatever, but if that's all then its just a precursor to fucking Overwatch and how people only like it because of the porn made from it.

Another game I don't get is the Rance games. Yeah, I know its porn with gameplay, but the porn sucks and the game parts were annoying, grindy and meticulous. Yet people hold them up like they're the pinnicals of gaming.

Oldschool JRPGs in general. Other than the cringy animu shit, it's the combat that really keeps me from enjoying those. I very much like the Mario&Luigi RPG series because the combat actually requires some non-spreadsheet skill and allows you to avoid taking damage. Same with grid-based combat, it requires some strategic thinking which is a general skill, not one specific to a single game. Classic JRPGs piss me of because being "good" at one means memorizing loads of useless information and crunching numbers, as in the least fun parts of any other game, and any "skill" you have at one game doesn't translate to others. And your immediate reward in combat are more numbers appearing above the enemies, or sometimes a completely non-interactive animation.

Also, my pet peeve in games in general is not being able to avoid or mitigate taking damage, and JRPGs are basically built around that.

>Metal Gear

>Stealth

Dude, at least mention Splinter Cell when talking about good 3rd person stealth games.

I suppose this one fits into the thread.

I will never understand the love for Metal Gear (other than the story). Gameplay-wise, MG has to me always been a glorified version of that one Ocarina of Time minigame. Cover-based stealth is the most boring kind, made even more boring by every third person shooter out there using it in the last decade. It's more of a puzzle game than anything else.

Unlike the light/sound-based stealth, cover-based kind makes you feel weak and vulnerable, running and hiding from the enemies' sight. In Splinter Cell and Thief you feel empowered, you're the hunter, you feel as though you are the one in control, being able to spook guards and create more darkness, forging new paths via ropes, jumps etc. What does Metal Gear use? Hiding behind cover in an almost 2D environment? Walking in a box and dropping cardboard cutouts like in a Loony Tunes cartoon? It doesn't make me feel powerful, it makes me feel like my enemies are just dumb AI programmed to fall for stupid stuff the programmers put in to give me "more stealth options".

> Classic JRPGs piss me of because being "good" at one means memorizing loads of useless information and crunching numbers

That's a large part of many, if not all strategy games as well though. You need to know your units and do some usually minor number crunching to understand what will be the most efficient way of aquiring victory.

>Also, my pet peeve in games in general is not being able to avoid or mitigate taking damage, and JRPGs are basically built around that.

In those games you need to stop thinking about damage being punishment for making a mistake and instead think of it as something akin to a soft timer on your actions, that you can influence with you skills, equipment and so on and so forth. The battles are basically puzzles that you need to solve, and the solution is the most efficient way of destroying the enemy, you need to solve that puzzle before your resources run out and the more of them you save the better you are.
