Depends entirely on how its executed. Done badly, power of friendship is extremely trite (especially when the player's character should be perfectly able to deal with things themselves), but when it fits the theme of the game, especially in cases where it's worked into the game's actual mechanics (such as Okami's "faith is a god's power" stuff), it can make for a very nice climax. Also doesn't necessarily require them to get their ass unavoidably kicked via cutscene first either; can be as little as the protagonist suddenly finding themselves completely alone, at least physically, and then have the support pulled in as the battle continues.
