GBA thread.

Looking for some hidden gems for the platform, something that isn't Castlevania, Megaman or Super Robot Wars or any other well-known shit that all of us have played.

Preferably action games, but platformers are fine too.

it's a bit unfortunate you want action games; there's little in the way of good shit outside the norm

Drill Dozer (a non-pokemon game from GameFreak)

Astro Boy: Omega Factor (from Treasure. The only good Astro Boy game. When you beat it, sit through the credits and reflect on your actions)

Sigma Star Saga (action-adventure and sidescrolling shmup. Multiple endings including ones locked behind beating it at least once)

Mario vs Donkey Kong (play DK'94 for GB too; MvsDK is its sequel (okay, DK'94's ending leads directly into DKjr, but still))

Sonic Battle (sanic beat'emup with a decent story)

Moving outside of action:

Fire Emblem: The Sealed Sword/Sword of Seals/whatever has a translation patch so if you like the GBA FE games, give this one a go

I trust you've played Mother 3?

Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart

Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak

there are plenty of Pokemon romhacks. Try one

Riviera: The Promised Land is a neat RPG with an interesting battle system. The PSP port has higher res CGs (pics related) but they butchered the sprites with >filters

Yggdrasil Union is an SRPG from the same devs but the PSP version is better in every way.

I haven't played them but the Klonoa GBA games are supposed to be pretty good puzzle platformers.

Rhythm Tengoku is a must play rhythm game. I think there's an english patch but it isn't necessary

I don't remember much but I think the Summon Night games were RPGs with a neat action battle system.

>>15449341

The DS still had a good amount of solid 2D games on it, but it could also do 3D to a better degree than the GBA as well. It was a balanced system at least, same with the PSP, whereas with the 3DS and Vita the push was on how handhelds could handle 3D much better than even the prior iterations.

My favorite games on GBA :

platform : Lady Sia, Kirby, Action Man Robo Atak, Crash Bandicoot the huge adventure, Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure. There was a Metal Slug type of game starring Lilo & Stitch which as I remember was quite good too. (no kidding)

Beat'em up: Jackie Chan Adventures and Shrek-Hassle at the Castle.

Races : Konami Krazy Racers, Demon Driver. I also have good memories of Nicktoon Racing.

RPG : Bomberman Tournament (yes, it was a RPG and it was really good) , Hamtaro Ham-Ham Heartbreak (only if you liked the show). My brother liked the Harry Potter RPGs on it, I prefered the GBC versions.

There was a stupid weird little known game we always had fun when playing two players : Elf Bowling .

I wouldn't say it's a really great classic, but the concept of using solar energy to play the game is pretty unique. I assume the only big issue is the thing inside for that to stop working.

>>15449195

dbdda5  No.15458629

>VBA

>not even VBAM

VBA is stupidly outdated and hasn't been updated in almost decade and a half (2004). The DS wasn't even out in Japan when it stopped updated and 3 years of GBA titles were released after that. It doesn't detect save types correctly and flat out can't run a lot latter games because of this (late lifespan titles deliberately used this failure as anti-piracy.*). Even VBAM can't do this, it just brute forces past it with a list of problem titles and their correct save types. VBAM is only worth using for linking to Dolphin.

*There are actually a few pieces of Wii shovelware that deliberately exploited Dolphin problems. The difference is these problems were extremely minor quirks that don't break anything else.

>>15458535

>I just want retro games to be fucking cheap, the market has to crash for it at some point.

I lurk like a croc and some local places and every so often come away with stuff that's of interest that was heavily underpriced. Though, it works both ways there, and sometimes I'll see things going for a lot more than anywhere else at the same time. But the point is that patience, perseverance, and no small bit of luck help me out (I suppose it's also heavily subject to the environment you live in as well). And for what I can't find at a cheap price, or find at all, there's always downloading and using emulators or loaders.

Faggot e-celebs with large viewerbases (who have too much money to drop and not enough common sense or patience) and a subscription perk of telling people in advance the next game they're going to shill does not help matters for anyone but resellers.

There are cheaper carts than the everdrive, but I decided it was a "buy once, cry once" deal. Especially for consoles that can't be emulated like the n64. I'm also thankful that they're so available so i don't have to hunt down risky asian flash carts.

I remember i was at a yard sale and i asked this person how much something costed (because no price tag) and he said "wait, let me check ebay".

I think you can hold the select key while you're starting a game up to stop the video from scaling, but yeah, if you have the taste and good sense to not just run the games on your computer, you're definitely going to want something better.

>Because for some reason only cartridge games retain their value over time

I don't know. While some cart based systems certainly have their scalper scenes, like the SNES, there's plenty of disc based games that have gone up a lot too. Even looking at Nintendo the Gamecube is like SNES 2.0 these days in terms of aftermarket, albeit with a smaller amount of worthwhile games.

>>15462755

Similar happened with me a while back, albeit about a PS2 game. They'd had it marked as $30, because that was the going ebay price, and when questioned on why they were asking that much at a yard sale, they said they couldn't find a buyer for it on ebay previously. Makes you wonder, if it didn't sell for that much within a wider net, so to speak, why did they think it would go for that much just amongst locals as a yard sale? game wasn't even a popular or well known one either. Talked them down to $20 because they wanted it gone. Game's reached $70 or so since then.

Probably doesn't count as homebrew, but there's a trio of finished games (Anguna, Broken Circle, World Reborn) that were ultimately never published, but still saw their ROMs freely uploaded by their creators. Can't speak of if they're good though; I haven't played them, and I rarely ever see them brought up.

I don't like how the everdrive sticks out, that's why I got an EZ-Flash.

Everything has been working wonderfully with it.

I might even mod the battery holders to stick a pair of SP batteries there.

>700mAh capacity

with some pretty simple modifications you can get some modern phone batteries into your SP. largest capacity one I've seen with my own eyes was 2200mAh but I've heard/read stories of 2700mAh batteries in there

I don't mind it but it's a common criticism. Not sitting flush with the hardware hasn't bothered me in my pocket or my GCN GBA player, but to me there is the nagging worry that the SP itself will serve as a fulcrum upon which the case will break should I land from a fall in just the wrong way. It is sturdy as hell though. I hear EZ-Flash is pretty good. What is it, the EZ-Flash IV?

>>15462831

Oh yeah, you cut the little plastic tabs off the batteries or something, yeah? Or maybe that was with the DS battery? Maybe a DS battery is what I ordered (since it fits). For some reason I am paranoid about having batteries that big (capacity wise) in a device not made for them, but now that I type that it looks pretty retarded. I worried about stability, but considering I walk around with a cell phone right next to my dick all day, if I was really worried about Li-ion shit I probably wouldn't do that. Might upgrade to that when my 700 dies. My default battery is still kicking so I haven't even installed the other one. I've seen batteries that big on eBay but they all seemed like Chinese lies–which isn't to say I didn't buy one sourced from there, but I did a lot of reading up on shit before I did. I've forgotten it all now. With the amount of capacity you're talking about it seems like it could run for days.

i actually ordered a 2700mAh battery and as far as I understand, since the voltage lines up it's completely safe to use in the SP. if the measurements line up I'll need to cut out the little side-tab in the battery compartment itself and shave the plastic nubs off the battery itself, but in theory it seems pretty simple. the battery is most definitely on the slow boat from china though so i have no idea when it'll arrive; i'll post when it does and let whatever gba thread is up at that time know if my game boy turned into a tesla coil or if it worked. seems pretty simple and easy though

One of my favourite games for the GBA that never gets mentioned is Kuru Kuru Kururin. It's an odd platformer that's very unique, don't be put off by the childish presentation as the later levels are incredibly hard.

When it comes to DS batteries this is the way to go. Cheap huge capacity 18650 batteries and you can print it along side a handle to fit your own hand.

https://hackaday.io/project/38525-18650-battery-adapter-for-nintendo-ds-lite

If it weren't for the tiny dpad the DS lite would be perfect for playing GBA games. Going from an SP to a super bright screen makes a world of difference and you get a headphone jack. Another good mod is to take off the proprietary charging port on the back and switch it with a more conventional USB micro or mini port. That way you can use any USB charger/battery pack and wire you want.

If you like FPSes, Sever and Ecks might be up your alley. But a true hidden gem on the GBA is Tactics Ogre: Knights of Lodis, but that's not an action game or Platformer. The only one of those that fits the criteria you set is Drill Dozer off the top of my head

Take any review you see on that with a MASSIVE grin of salt if you absolutely have to get info from that site and just flat out ignore the ones made after about 2013-2014. I've heard rumors that these faggots don't even play the games they review to completion and just look up info on it in Wikipedia and GameFAQs. That's believable since they are the type of people who probably don't like video games in the first place.
