Okay, so I'm interested in getting into dark souls, and I've never touched nor played any of the games. However, I see opinions on the game so fucking divided. It seems to me, at least, like the fans can't come to a unanimous agreement on which ones are good and which ones are bad. Opinions are even split for the remastered port. It might just be me though because I only see glimpses of the dark souls fanbase.
So how do I go through this fucking series? What do I start with? Which ones should I avoid? Why does it seem like the fans are so separated?
Also, what of the remastered port of DS1? I have a switch and PC, and the original PC port of DS1 is gone. Should I just get remastered, or should I buy the vanilla version on 360 or PS3?

Demons Souls isn't Dark Souls but it's a damn fine game. I don't think any are worth avoiding, even 2 which is pretty fucking shitty compared to the other games. Playing it yourself is the only way to know what it is like, and playing Demons and 1 before it will help you see why some people don't like it. I would recommend the original versions of all the games at least for first plays. The newer versions aren't shit exactly, just different and not really any better.

Demons and dark were great games, but we all finished them a few times, there is nothing more to see, it sucks there aren't a lot of games that are that good, but you have to fucking move on with your life eventually.

Never listen to /v/. Literally play all of them. And most fans think 2, though good as a game and definitely worth at least one playthrough (which will still be an enjoyable 100 hours or so), is the weakest of the series. Start with Demon Souls or Dark Souls (I recommend Demons if you have a PS3, it's great and you can see the series progress before your eyes). Play them in release order, as always (so Des, 1, 2, 3, and Bloodborne). As for which is the best, play them and form your own opinion. Everyone prefers different things in their souls games, saying something "is shit" is such a loaded statement. As for the remaster, eh, maybe get it for 1 because it really revitalized the multiplayer base which is really fun in one of the forest areas. It isn't like it's detrimental to get the remaster, it just isn't necessary if you already own the original which it seems you don't. Enjoy! One of the greatest rides I've ever been on.

Dark Souls 1 is the most solid game of the 3, and is generally a great game and worth at least one playthrough. The "remastered" edition is really just what the original PC port should have been, and it's also the only one available now. The issue with it is that it's all very basic features that didn't deserve a full re-release (especially when you consider that a 24 year old game recently got a free fucking source port update). Either way, if you've never played it before, DS:RE is your best option.
Dark Souls 2 is usually seen as the worst in the series, and is also fairly irrelevant to the lore - it's only worth playing if you really want to experience something "different". It does, however, have some overall pretty good balance, so there's that. Just don't expect a cohesive world, great lore, interesting enemy variety, or most other elements that made DS1 a good game.
Dark Souls 3 is a mixed bag. The combat sees a bit more polish (and is much faster paced), but it's still just as imbalanced as Dark Souls 1. It also basically removed poise, the mechanic which lets you shrug off wimpy dagger hits when you're in full heavy armor (which DS1 has). The game itself is a fair bit more linear, and it has less originality (due to being, well, a sequel, but also developer laziness). The lore is probably the most interesting bit, since it ties up some nice loose ends from DS1. It's personally my favorite in the series (even if it's not as good of a game overall as DS1), but I would recommend playing Dark Souls 1 first.

Also OOPS I forgot, Bloodborne came out between 2 and 3 (so before 3). I played Bloodborne after 3 and I was glad I did, it's the best. So do DeS or 1 first, then 2 and 3, then BB. I really think you'll like BB more than 3. 3 is underrated though, it's a fantastic action game with great boss fights.

It should be noted that experience with DS3/BB will ruin the play through of the other a bit. I played 3 before BB, found speed and aggression trivial to acclimate to, and had an overall easy experience. Managed to beat the hardest boss of the DLC one life.

Dark Souls 1 is objectively the best, and should be played first. Don't bother with the remaster, it was a bamco cashgrab that somehow turned out worse than the original one. The pvp is good, the best in the series, but it has a lot if flaws and not many people play anymore. If you do want to do pvp then you should be able to find a ptde key on one of those reselling sites, otherwise just pirate it. You should also inmediatly get dsfix, and a kbm mod if you don't have a controller as the game is nigh unplayable without them.
Dark Souls 2 is a mess in nearly every regard, but it still has its moments and you might be able to enjoy it. Scholar of the First Sin is more difficult because B-team's idea of balance is throwing 5 or more damage sponges at you every room. It also attempts to shoehorn in a bunch of 1's lore without much success, so I generally consider the base game to be better. The pvp is decent, generally on par with 1.
Dark Souls 3 feels good gameplay wise, but is essentially a rehash of Souls 1 when it comes to the visuals and levels. It needs to have a poisen swamp, it needs to have a skeleton rape dungeon, it needs to have an onion knight, it needs to have anor londo because look goy remember this, wasnt this cool, dont forget to buy your solaire amibo ehehe.
Its pvp is terrible due to how little stamina required to roll, resulting in long boring chases only to get cucked by the hosts 2 phantoms and their 100% reddit approved straight swords. Don't buy it, and maybe dont even play it.
You should try going in as blind as possible for the best expirience, but it is good to get an idea for how the mechanics function and what the stats do since you dont accidently ruin your build. Demons Souls is also top tier, but difficult to play if you dont own a ps3.

Demon's Souls was my favorite but its unfinished and unrefined in a lot of ways. Dark Souls was much more refined and more finished thanks to DLC but I felt they went a bit overboard with stuff like New London and Tomb of Giants. Dark Souls 2 is trash. Bloodborne is great. The graphical changes are unnoticeable at best and worse than the original at worst. The addons make the game more like the shittier games in the series. Other than being able to use more than one consumable at a time, that one's a nice addition. The main benefit of the remaster is 60fps that works better, and not having to install dsfix, if you care about that.

2's best quality was it's ridiculous PVP at really high Soul Memory. People got really creative with their builds and you mostly fought against Nips at that point. On the PS4 cersion anyways.

for DaSII, go with Scholar of the first sin. It's got everything in it for cheaper. You'll miss the original experience of the original areas, as enemies and items ahve been shuffled around, but overall, it tends to be better. It's probably the largest of the games, or, if not, it feels like it. It's a bit wonky compared to the others and is certainly the black sheep of the franchise, but that doesn't make it bad on its own.
DaSIII is Darks Souls fanfiction. Its faster, its more anime, and you can tell it's on the bloodborne engine
