I've been dreaming of a new JSR or JSR-inspired game with modern cel-shading and 2.5D animation for years now. It was really boring, and the whole ball mechanic for how foghting works was stupid. It felt like a glorified game of racquetball/squash with faggy designed characters and terrible coloration.

The problem is that most people get bored of fighting games after an hour of playing. If you want to truly enjoy a fighting game it requires you to master the gameplay. You will probably never get good enough if you play against one person or the CPU forever. So it requires you to live in an area where lots of people play fighting games, which isn't very many places. Therefore most people just stick to casually playing online or they just don't play fighting games. But they want to seem part of a group, so when a new fighting game is announced they act hype for it, despite actually not caring.

I think the big thing that separates Lethal League from DiveKick is that DiveKick is a joyless experience. From a game design perspective, there is nothing fun about a game where you're both constantly whiffing until you're not. DiveKick has no moment-to-moment buildup of tension, it's just whiffing constantly until someone makes a mistake.

Lethal League hit on a really solid rhythm of escalating tension and climax. There's a juicy back and forth as stakes are raised and the ball gets faster before someone slips up. Seeing how a player out-plays someone in Lethal League is a lot easier for normal people, which adds to its appeal.

Don't even get me started on how amateur everything is on the artistic side, DiveKick is super amateur. You need characters that appeal to a variety of players. DiveKick's characters were pretty much all FGC in-jokes that nobody outside the hardcore circle would get. It's fine if that's what you're going for, but it's just cringe-inducing for outsiders.

I wanna add to this by saying that trying to fake your opponent out by whiffing the right way is normal gameplay, whilst faking your opponent out with that… stent, I think it's called? The thing where you kill the ball's speed suddenly? That's a ton more fun and tricky to setup and a lot more involved than Divekick's usual thing. I've played a ton of the online and the amount of stupid kills you can sneak in with that is pretty high.

I think players call it bunting. Honestly I continue to be impressed by how far the devs can stretch the mechanics of the game. There are a limited number of variables that can be tweaked between characters (jump height, hit angles, and special ability) but the way these things interact leads to characters having some unique combos that only they can pull off. They've added some new mechanics to the game that differentiate it from LL1, too, so we'll see how it plays out.

Long and short: It's not that good, but not so bad that it's worth talking about. The overall look is kind of off-putting, but the general flow of movement is pretty alright, although it's not polished and fine-tuned enough to feel natural and excitingly fun. The storyline is crap and the gimmick of being JSR's "spiritual successor" isn't true. It's a game about running around on laser rollerblades with level design that's just not that great.

Not exactly an industry veteran, but here's what I can say:

A) Don't sell yourself as an actor. The reality is that there are simply more talented voice actors out there than there are jobs. Sell yourself as a director, use a public forum to conduct auditions, learn the equipment and tools of the trade and make sure your actors have adequate equipment before directing them live via whatever VOIP service you prefer, or in real life if you have access to them.

B) Take an acting class. Directing other actors is a skill you start building by first performing for your peers in a constructively critical environment. Your friends telling you that you "do" good voices is not going to make you better. Don't "do" voices. Act. It might sound rich coming from the guy who played Candyman, but there is a difference between just doing a funny voice and using one for a performance.

Sorry if there was a misunderstanding, I'm strictly the director for voice acting, not a director for the game itself. Being a game director is not really a role you get hired for so much as one you will more likely appoint yourself to if you have the money to hire a team.

Learn how to program if you want to make your own games. If you want to work on games, you need to bring some skill that is indispensable to a team- writing is generally not considered one of those skills unless you are writing a story-heavy game, and usually in this case the creator will see fit to do the writing themselves.
