Besides WOW, which is fucking shit, there is a surprisingly little amount of games that allow you to play as these funny little critters. For an iconic DnD equivalent of a goomba, there is barely anything. The Styx series is a fairly fun stealth game but I want something like Dungeon Keeper or Overlord, where I can build my own nest from which to operate from, stealing and killing livestock from the local dirty peasants. Luring dumbass adventurers into traps and ambushes who would try to come and loot the place and then raping their women and using them as broodmothers to increase the nests numbers and strength. (And as emergency rations in a pinch.) Are there any trash mob simulators like that where you beat challenges by zerging by using expendable units or clever tactics?

They're the raw material for your weapons and armor forge. You can't feed them to eachother but they're 100% loyal to the point where you can send hundreds of them into the fire for a weapon you might never use again when you find something better. They're actually reasonably charming and the second game allows you to revive your favorite minions, they get names. The revival obviously done at the cost of other minion souls.
