I did once when it was new. 'Sealark' was meant to be a cute fishing rpg in the spirit of legend of the riverking.
Usual thing happened. Lone dev had a suspiciously timed breakdown and shut it down. Cucks said 'keep the money, apology accepted' i just refunded the charge and never touched kickstarter again.

At least did get everything that was put out digitally saved though, because he up and deleted everything eventually, and doesn't even acknowledge his unfinished masterpiece.

People have been making games for free for decades. If someone thinks their idea is really hot shit they will make it happen even if that means self funding or GOD FORBID taking out a loan from an actual bank.

There has never been a single game worth backing on Kickstarter, and if there were, it's 50/50 whether you get the game, it will be late by anywhere from one year to three, and it's never going to live up to any expectations. If it turns out good, buy it once it comes out. If it turns out average, pirate it once it comes out. Nothing good can come from backing a Kickstarter.

The worst part of it is that for some people it can absolutely demolish their incentive to actually DO anything. Maybe they had good vision and work ethic in the beginning, but if they get an unbalanced amount of support for what they're doing, they could turn into total layabouts, since they technically already got the payoff.
Maybe if KS held it in escrow, maybe it could work.

The thing is that people won't take kickstarter projects seriously if their goal is asking for peanuts. Kickstarters these days are often used as a form of "announcements" for indies because it's an extremely good marketing tool, but if the goal is too small it won't gain enough traction to matter. You need to at least get to 5 figures to make an impression, so around $10.000. Same sentiment when indie games actually being sold; oddly enough the ones that ask for $20 do a lot better than the ones that are sold for under $10, at least when looking at statistics. When the asking price is higher people seem to perceive it as a more serious, fleshed out product.
I agree with the rest of your post though, asking for more than what is necesary is shooting yourself in the foot in the long run. You're essentially taking away part of your sales up front.

>Hover (released)
It's okay, but it's not the Jet Set Radio spiritual successor it claims to be. Needs to be updated and patched a bit more, to really make it a decent game, but it's passable for what I paid.
>Little Devil Inside (unreleased)
They post updates once a month and missed their deadline by 2-3 years. Apparently they decided to rebuild the whole game in a different engine partway through.. and move to another office.
>Witchmarsh (unreleased)
Even fewer updates. Missed the deadline by 3 years. They claim to still be working on it, but they didn't get all that much money in the first place.
>Shantae (released)
Everything I expected and then tons of free DLC updates.
>TUG (kind of released)
They got to early access and got playable copies to the backers, but the game isn't even a fraction of what they promised.
>Shovel Knight (released)
Also pleased with this one. Released in a timely manner and kept the free updates coming.
>Delver's Drop (unreleased)
They had a playable demo a few years back, then they decided to switch engines, and they've been dead quiet for the past year or so. They missed their deadline by 5 fucking years. Just checked, apparently they're still posting apologetics in the comments of the kickstarter.
So, 4 released, 3 unreleased, one dud. Better than expected, worse than it should be. Nearly all of these were done 3-5 years ago on my end, when Kickstarter was still considered viable and new and interesting.. and it has only gotten worse in recent years. Wouldn't bother kickstarting anything these days unless it's a tabletop game, because they're the only things that seem to reliably deliver, as long as they actually have a product ready, instead of not even started.

I was a pre-kickstarter backer for Elite Dangerous. I wished I'd saved a copy of the original website because nobody ever believes me when I tell them that originally it was planned to be a single player game that was going to be like Elite 2 and 3 but with modern graphics. But then two things happened, the Star Citizen kickstarter and the "dads" started making suggestions on the ED forum. Braben wanted that SC money so he turned the game into a pseudo MMO and completely compromised the fully newtonian space simulation (which relied on speeding up and slowing down time for long distance travel) as a result. The dad's dreamed and whined on the forums about their days playing Elite 1 unable to realise that unlike the AI in Elite 1, another player would never deliberately stop turning to let the dad have a chance at killing them. The result was an empty, pseudo lobby "MMO", with clicky inter system travel and a combat system designed to emulate arcade physics in an engine fully capable of newtonian physics via arbitrarily nerfing the players ability to move in several ways, i.e. yaw compression, a sweet spot blue point and no stabilisation thrusters in free flight. The result was a system that the Elite 2 and 3 fans loathed and the Elite 1 dads quickly ran away from when they realised that the years they spent shooting AI in a BBC Micro games back in the 1980's didn't translate to "leet skills" when faced with real players. Ironically the dad's now complain the most about PvP, despite being the ones responsible for it being so horrendously shit in the first place. I never played more than about 20 hours of Elite Dangerous before going back to 3; I still have the big £90 premium box sitting somewhere in mint condition, maybe I can sell it to some dad and get my money back.

The devs assigned themselves another three or four months until release, so you never know what mechanics might change, but as of now they’re super-solid—all the backer updates I’ve gotten recently have been more about polish and adding content than any big fundamental changes, which is nice. They pretty much add a big area, stuff it full of art and words, take feedback on what’s good and what’s not, then go back and improve all the existing content to match the refinements, so it’s only gone upward in quality since Early Access started. With that said, it’s basically Sunless Sea but combat is actually fun and ship customization is more impactful than just making damage numbers higher (grapeshot cannons vs. chainguns depending on your playstyle, for example). If you didn’t like Sunless Sea because of the slow travel/repetitive deaths/bad combat then you should give it another chance; if you liked Sunless Sea this is just more but better. If you didn’t like Sunless Sea because of the words words words narrative structure then you won’t like this either, but I love the lore, so it’s a big hit for me.

Too bad it doesn't even have 64 players left to fill up a server because the only people who do play it are so autistically devoted to being good at the game that they make the game unfun for anyone who isn't as autistic as them and have driven everyone off and killed the game before its even released.

never have i even entertained the thought. it's investing into something without getting any returns. that's also why kickstarters can scam people with no legal repercussions. it's classified as a donation and not an investment. if kickstarters allowed me to invest in their games and i'm guaranteed a return on the profits then i would. until then they can fuck right off

Because they need money and don't want to get a proper job. They throw together an idea, take money and rarely if ever actually do the idea. Actual devs using crowdfunding also get poisoned, because now they have thousands of paying fans to appease and pander to.

Yeah, I've Kickstarted projects before. As in I kicked the developers in the ass until they started working. ~ Peter "Get the fuck out of my office" Moore.

Who cares when it's released as long as it's a solid game? I honestly don't give a fuck whether they met the promised delivery date.

Yooka-Laylee and Bear Simulator.
Both times I was sorely dissapointed.
