To explain it a bit more detail, there's an interview somewhere out there on a defunct website with this info.
>NoJ doesn't think the west like turn based gaming, they think westerner want button press = exciting action (jump, shoot, etc)
>So AW and FE stay in Japan only for years because of this
>Even to the point where Sakurai was supposedly going to remove FE characters from Super Smash Bros Melee western release until the localization team told him to keep them
>Advance Wars get seen by Treehouse for localization work for GBA launch and they really like it, especially with the in depth tutorial for newcomers
>Advance Wars launches on GBA and is still one of the highest rated GBA games on meta critic and sells well.
>This causes a change to get more turn based series like AW and FE for the west.
>FE6 (starring Roy and what Melee was promoting) western release doesn't get localized but FE7 with it's in-depth tutorial/prologue chapters serves as a good starting point for newcomers to get into the series, leading to FE get a foothold into the western market.
Nintendo fans seem to think that Melee (and it FE characters) is what lead to FE stateside when it was actual the turn based strategy AW high sales and praise that lead to FE turn based strategy RPG also being given a western release.
From a business perspective, seriously bringing FE to the west because of two cameos in a crossover fighting game just sounds utterly retarded.

Also a hidden gem people never talk about is Gameboy Wars, the ones made by Hudson for the GameBoy and GameBoy Color. Personally, I think the change to the CO system in and of itself was a necessary step that will never get a follow up.
I'm not the most technically minded when it comes to turn based games so I can't really articulate how these shifts changed the overall play of games. But from my experiences, building a core of units protecting, or being spearheaded by a CO-unit made play between me and my friends more offensive as opposed to turtling up and then waiting for CO gauge to be filled for a counterattack. I like the idea of juggling the benefit of a CO zone, and using your CO power.
I would have liked to see them expound on this new system and introduce more abilities.

I'm just bummed that we won't get any more cool Black Hole weapons like the Neo-Tank.
I always wanted them to make a Mech/Walker type unit that could be really versatile on the battlefield.
>Armed with an Autocannon and Short Range Missiles
>Autocannon can fire on ground units and ships directly
>Missiles can fire on air directly or indirectly, and ground units indirectly up to 2 Spaces away
Basically a stronger version of the Anti-Tank from DoR with the ability to hit more air than just A Choppers. Between a Tank and MD Tank in terms of direct firepower, and about as strong as Artillery when firing against air. Unit is comprised of a 3 mech squad which gradually gets destroyed as its health is reduced. Has slightly longer movement range than an Infantry unit, but can also be transported by Rigs and Lander ships. They'd be hella expensive.
I also thought it would be cool if there were buildings on maps that you would have to capture in order to build more advanced units. So starting off you can build up to Tanks and Artillery.
Capture a Munitions Depot and you can build up to MD tanks and Rocket Artillery. Capture an Advanced Weapons Plant and you can build War/Mega Tanks, Missiles, and Neo Tanks.
Of course this requirement could be turned on or off on a map by map basis with the justification of "We have a steady supply line in the region and can build whatever" or whatever.

Well they'd basically be VOTOMs so it's not like they're enormous.
In DoR the Rigs were a lot bigger and had the stuff to build temporary airports and naval bases. I figure you could shove 3 VOTOMS in there no problem. Though maybe just going full VOTOMs and giving them wheel skates would be a better idea. Have em chug fuel to compensate.
I was thinking having them transportable by T Chopper but that would make them a bit too OP.
Now something that would be cool would be a way to transport infantry via Bomber. A Paratrooper unit. Can load into Bombers only at Airports, but when unloaded they can drop up to 2 tiles away from the bomber. They'd do a ton of damage to other infantry type units, and have grenades that they can use against tanks and vehicles.
259415 No.15457307
>>15457273
Gameboy Wars 3 did that by adding a T plane. Can load 2 infantry and other low armored units, but heavier stuff will give it a speed malus, and they where really expensive, at least in the materials department (100), although the money needed was that just that of a tank. They where also quite fragile compared to other air units.

Japan has always baffled me for reasons like this: They've got all these IPs, these absolutely fantastic games, sometimes entire franchises of games, many with many above average and even great entries, like Advance Wars for instance… and then they just stop. They give up. They shelf it. They split the studio 10 ways or just boot every employee overnight.
Likewise, they've got so many series, so many sources of inspiration and fully developed settings and premises that would make amazing games, but they just turn into retards and make subpar, wonky fighting games out them. How many Shounen Jump crossover games have there been and how many have been anything besides utterly awful? One Piece is pretty much the unofficial religion of Japan and they've still yet to make a single fucking 10/10 One Piece game. How can they not amass the resources and support and the dedication of any and every game dev in the country for something like that?

The reason they probably cancelled Famicom Wars it's because it brought troubles in Japan. It began with Advance Wars, it came to America and Europe on September 10th, and they where thinking about releasing it in Japan the day after, but 9/11 happened and they delayed it. AW didn't get to Japan until 3 years later, and they sold it bundled with AW 2 in the same cartridge.
AW DS didn't have any problems at Japan, but for some reason, DoR didn't get there until 2013 through the DSiWare for Club Nintendo users. What's weird enough is the fact that they had the game perfectly translated to Japanese and said texts can be unlocked via hacks and patches. As ironic as it seems, it was the Japanese the ones who wouldn't get really into said strategy turn based games, opposed as to what the developers thought, that westerners wouldn't like Nintendo Wars.

Nintendo locks games away that underperform and only takes risks in the form of gimmicky consoles. One Piece has games that are said to be great, but they're just great for a One Piece game. Really just average shit otherwise. I think it's less "Westerners don't like tactics/strategy games" and more like " The domestic market doesn't like tactics/strategy games". Outside of Disgaea and Fire Emblem, I can't think of any major tactics/strategy game to come from Japan in the last 5 years and most of those that I can think of were made in the 1990s or 2000s like the Ogre Battle series, Final Fantasy Tactics, Langrisser and Front Mission (I especially remember this one since 4 was the last tactics-based Front Mission we received in the US and that was like in 2004. All the other ones were Japan only except for that third person shooter game in 2010 which was so-so) . The current new craze is based around gatcha games over there right after the mobile craze of the last 10 or so years, so until that changes I doubt that it'll come back.

To be fair, unlike Sony, Microsoft and their subsidiaries, Nintendo and their subsidiaries almost never deal with "current year politics" on either side of the isle, because alienating half your audience cuts your profit in half. It's really more of the vocal fanbases surrounding their games that tend to be libtarded degenerates that hate Orange Hitler Grumpt. "Polluted" tiles make units lose 1hp per turn. 2 new units are added, nuclear infantrymen (they cost as much as mech infantry, have less fuel and just armed with assault rifles, although they are immune to the toxicity of the nuclear wastes) and radioactive tanks (like light tanks, but a bit swoler and more expensive, they also withstand radiation). Maybe you could add more stuff regarding this, like a bomber that throws nuclear waste around and a vehicle that can also clean said wastes. This area of effect gimmick can be quite interesting.

Dirty bombers eh? Good thing most of the warefare is proxy resource wars on asteroid mines. Also like this combined with gravity and atmosphere affecting how math works in battle. Lower gravity means more infantry mobility but less accuracy for example. Heavier gravity makes certain aircraft and tanks impossible to use.
No atmosphere means no always air units. Dense atmosphere makes air pressure too heavy for infantry to survive. Also almost every environment has no breathable air. So it'll be interesting.
