A quick guide to some of the different series you can try out.
>Harvest Moon
Avoid any of the newer titles, usually anything on the 3DS is dangerous territory due to a different development team that don't care. Friends of Mineral Town is my personal favourite though anything around that era is considered some of the series golden stuff.
There's a reason Harvest Moon was known as the king of this for a while, it used to get a lot of it right.
There's a PSP spinoff called Innocent Life that's not… terrible. But other games in the series (and genre for that matter) far, far outshine it.
>Rune Factory
If you want a more Harvest Moon with RPG element experience, play the older titles. As the games progress the farming gets dumbed down and the combat becomes more of the focus, 4 actually has no love rivals whatsoever and all character events are done with RNG. If you're looking for some casual fun with light farming elements and a waifu sim then this does nicely.
Don't play Tides of Destiny, farming takes a massive back seat and dungeons are the primary focus. You also cannot beat the story (or marry anyone) until you max everyone's friendship levels.
>Story of Seasons
The new definitive Harvest Moon experience. Gets farming right, far more than the other series and it's pretty well made to boot. If you've ever played Harvest Moon and thought to yourself you wanted more to farming, then pick this one up.
>Stardew Valley
A pretty well made game given it's a one-man indie project, with some reasonably well done farming mechanics. Since this one is on PC there's mods for it, although the character designs are kind of ugly (and well, diverse tumblr-esque) and there's lack of depth to mining when you unlock the second mine.
It's not a bad game by far, better than the new Harvest Moon games but there are better farming sims out there. Already explored the other farming sims and want more? Check this one out.
There are other games that pop up, inspired by Harvest Moon but they're usually not good. Wild Season was a kickstarted game but they decided to turn it into an episodic game (and it really wasn't good to begin with). Another one that crops up on some lists is World's Dawn but this one is also kinda bad, it's probably the least "farming sim" out of any of the games on this list and i'm even including Rune Factory Tides of Destiny on that. Well, second least "farming sim" only to My Time at Portia which is more about crafting than farming. Portia also really poorly optimised and not even finished, with a lot of work needing to be done before that can even be considered playing yet.
My advice would be to avoid any of these games in this section, they're either unfinished, really bad or both. Stick to the four series outlined above.
Also enjoy best girl for your troubles.
