You don't need to register to play. Just log in and play as a guest on the game.

Yeah don't waste time trying to register and get the log in to work. You can just username and password completely blank and it'll log you right in.

COMMANDERS

you can order players to build, not just workers; use players for frontline building because workers can't defend themselves

outposts/burrows dont give you mined resources until you either demolish them or upgrade them

don't make players run across half the map to get everywhere: build a heavy transport/gateway when you have the gold and put it somewhere useful; build garrisons/lairs close to the enemy if your team is on the offensive and you have the stone

the counter in the top right corner shows you the number of idle workers and it selects them when you click on it

PLAYERS

kill neutrals for gold if your team is low; if there are no gold mines on the map they are the only source besides enemies

don't be afraid to request things you can't afford if your team has lots of gold

don't all go seige at the same time; defend the people who do go seige

It just takes practice. It can be hard because of the arc of the projectile, and it's surprisingly small hitbox but it's probably the best unit furry side.

It was released in 2004 as a multiplayer only game, mostly distributed online, they made it freeware in like 2007 when they realized Savage 2. It's actually my favourite among the games from that time, kept playing despite there not being any sort of MMR stuff implemented. From what I've heard people who dislike it often complain about things that we all know how to counter. Or the melee combat system, while most people who kept playing kept playing it precisely because of the melee combat.

I remember playing this game ages ago. Fun times. I wanted to join you so I downloaded the Linux client and actually managed to make it work, but I forgot that my udp connectivity is nonexistent at the moment due to my isp's shitty broken firewall, so I can't see any servers. Fuck me.

There was Nuclear Dawn, but that's been dead as fuck for years. The RTS element was kind of neat because the buildings need power to function so the commander has to build relay stations to expand. You can really fuck the enemy by punching a hole in their power grid and pushing their spawns way back.

I tried putting a password on the server, but it doesn't look like it worked. The configs in this game aren't very straightforward

Other games like this:

Sacrifice (2000), primarily an RTS where the commander also plays the game as an action game, clicking on the ground to order units around.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto(2000), Third person shooter where the player switches between command apparently.

Natural Selection 1&2, Very similar to Savage with the Alien/Human, speed/firepower assymetry, it doesn't take place on RTS type maps with huge fields though, but in tactical FPS style maps.

Savage 2(2008), Sequel that didn't appeal to hardcore fans, added more unappreciated MOBA-elements, abilities with cooldowns and such. More like an MMORPG less like a shooter.

Samurai Wars, Full-conversion mod for Savage 1, symmetric teams in a feudal Japan setting. It's integrated in the Savage XR client and can be played by loading any map titled samurai_mapname, you do this in Savage XR by clicking "vote/ignore" at the team selection screen(accessed by pressing escape). You can also open a vote for kicking players this way.

Gunz: The Duel, not an RTS/FPS hybrid but had a hybrid melee/shooting game type combat.

Semi-old fag on this game (played a bunch when it was "new", kept playing on-and off over the years).

My advice: don't bother learning it.

Password the server, dick around with other anons for a while, then kill it before the next game night.

Let me tell you something about the "community" in this game. I'm not gonna point names, they know who they are and what they've done.

The biggest fuck up the devs made was the horrible netcode. Even your 50 Ping behaves like 250. And the 250 behaves like 1250.

Now you gotta remember, the community has played with this shitty netcode for years.

They grew with it, and got used to it.

A common sight new players encounter is turning a corner, suddenly 6-7 shots hit them at once, he rubber bands 2 meters back, stops for a second and dies.

THIS IS PAR FOR THE COURSE. And pretty much accepted as is by the old community.

If you can put up with that, good for you. If you can't, I got some news: it's never gonna improve.

You used to have two options. An American server and an Euro server. They were active at different times of the day. Usually, if less Euro's were up than Americans, they'd play on the America server and vice versa.

I went some months without internet, when I came back the American server was pretty much dead (with the Americans gone besides I think 3 guys) and the Krauts wouldn't talk to me. Eventually, one of the Murricans told me there was some sort of spat between both communities and one had to go. And go they did. You'd expect such a small community to drop the elitism and do their best to bring in fresh new players, but as you've seen in >>15425177 , they play to win, not to have fun. Even after all these years, the autism gets the better of them, and they HAVE to win. They play hard, and they play fast.

Word of warning: the "teaching" they can give you guys is 20% tactics (some of you legitimely could do with more "thinking" before doing retarded shit like taking lvl 5 heavies with no equipment) but the other 80% is how to time your shots/attacks around the shitty Netcode.

Tactics will only carry you so far, if you can't play around the horrible hitreg, you can be a lvl20 heavy with any gear you want, a normal worker can kill you with a basic weapon.

I also had a friend that worked with some 10 other guys to try and port this game to another engine so they could un-fuck the netcode, but they got bullied by the "community" because that would "split the playerbase!", aka: they couldn't exploit the bad netcode to pubstomp anymore. Shit got bad enough one of the team killed himself and the rest sorta gave up. Take everything I said with a grain of salt, I might be a bit FUCKING ANGRY after losing a friend like that.

Addiction is a very appropriate expression in this case.

I play like shit nowadays, but when I was semi-regular, I was half-decent at it. Which means I destroyed newer players with ease. So I took it upon me to pick the chaplain and buff/heal the new players.

One funny thing you learn over the years is that you can't really direct other people. I can try to give orders to new players, but it's a 10% chance he follows them (angrily) and 90% he flips me off and does his thing.

The way I see it, healing him will keep him alive, allowing him to make more mistakes and learn from it.

This is also one of the reasons I stopped playing. One guy in particular got ultra buttfucking mad when he was on my team. He knew I was gonna buff/heal the newbies, and according to him, I was reinforcing bad behavior. They should, in his opinion, be berated and told what to do every time. If they failed to follow orders (or Heaven's forbid, think for themselves), the correct option was the kick them out of the team. Keep in my, there's people like these on BOTH teams.

But hey, one booty-blasted autistic giving me shit doesn't bother me.

It bothers me when 3-4 of them start making fun of the newbies for having a "pocket medic". This got bad enough that the newbies requested I didn't heal them. The oldfags licked their lips and proceed to massacre them. Or I kept healing them and the match text became high-school tier drama.

This was 3 and half years ago, I was still in college. Took me a while to accept that this sort of shit would eventually push away any and all new players while burning out everyone but the most hardcore oldfags.

I could have kept playing, just less, but the rust would eventually make me prey for the oldfags that play 16 hours a day and the dwindling supply of new players put me off.

He was dealing with actual dark family shit IRL, the online stuff was just the little push he needed, I guess. Can't really blame a bunch of autists for saying means words, on the other hand I don't want anything to do with them anymore.

Best solution I've seen offerered in this sort of "high-octane autismal shitfest" is to revamp the game every now and then. Change it drastically so the oldfags gotta re-learn it along side new players and everyone's on the same field (kinda, oldfags will always have an advantage).

For instance, the infamous SS13. People played for years, oldfags can easily turn a new player inside out (literally). Shit was declining (very slowly though) and BOOM, Colonial Marines shows up. Devolves into another autismal shitfest for a while, for a good while it was fresh, new and attracted players. Then BOOM, Fallout 13 and then some custom FTL schtick that noone had any idea how to fire a single gun and were just experimenting things.

Even Lifeweb (albeit having fallen in the "I paid 500$ to pay this class, I have the right to rape you" schtick) share the same common theme: both old and new players tossing their arms in the hair screaming "WHAT THE FUCK, HOW DO I X".

Password locks don't always work. This board's minecraft server, for instance, has attracted all manner of lolcows, redditors, and halfchan browsers (all self-admitted, by the way). One of the main reasons why I don't play minecraft with /v/ anymore. The worst part is that a lot of people put up with the foreigners and even defend them.
