Just dropped today, Haven't got it yet but I plan to because I've been looking for this kind of game for awhile. Its a sci-fi dark-meme game with guns and real weapons instead of powertools and larp-sticks. Anyone try it yet? Is this your first time hearing of it? The Surge was set in a factory, hence no guns. This is why you don't deserve games with creative design. Because you start crying about muh realism right out of the gate instead of appreciating some cool designs. Journos knocked LOTF for being rip-off Souls (mostly true) so they branched out and created a unique and varied industrial aesthetic. Then the journos and soulscucks got mad that it wasn't a fantasy game and that the levels were "too samey". The bosses might have done it, but the marketing material show'd little of them and what little was shown… was vastly overshadowed by Nier: Automata. If you were shopping from a game back then, you'd see two options on the market. The Surge, a series don't know (or know as a sucessor to LOTF which doesn't strike confidence) or Nier, a series that's well known and has 2B's butt.

Remember how Warframe was on release? This shit looks and feels exactly like that, but single player. And yes WF was quite similar to dark souls with stamina bar and you being fragile as all fuck early in the game with ultra simplistic melee and guns being the focus.
You can also dismember enemies and they will try to attack you in different ways.

It's janky indie dark souls clone with guns and shitty graphics hidden by huge amount of post processing. And by dark souls I mean stamina bar, shitton of stats with only one to raise per level, losing your exp on death and needing to pick it up, enemies dealing shitton of damage but being slow and predictable etc etc.
You can't block or parry, but you can see enemies' own stamina like in Nioh so it all boils down to figuring how to stunlock new enemy type.
There is next to no dress up, no online component, no melee combos or even different weapons, everything is just dual dildo doing one single swinging animation.
The only selling point is the setting and the atmosphere of some post-human space horror where you have no idea what the fuck is going on.
But since E.Y.E already did that, and did that much better, I don't think you can really sell it just for that.

You can shoot off arms to disable enemies' corresponding attacks. If you shoot both arms off enemies will try to kick your ass literally.
Shooting in the legs makes them lose stamina faster, but you can't actually shoot legs off while enemy is still alive. But if you kill them by shooting legs, they will fly off just like upper limbs.
Shooting in the face does good ol higher damage than on average.
I don't think it applies to bosses though.

It could be an ok game if the central point of it was dismembering enemies like in Dead Space but right now it's mostly shooting them in the head / running around them and putting a couple of bullets in their glowing weak spots on their backs. Also, the environments are very repetitive. Everything is gray and the plot is obtrusive enough to be boring. I would rate it 5/10 but overall it sadly is a wasted potential.

Whether or not you use the lock on feature will drastically change how you play. If you rely on locking on, where you don't have to aim and can focus on dodging, your strategy will likely be to attack the yellow-glowing parts, usually on their backs, to do the most damage. Everything is extremely bullet spongey. The first assault rifle I got had a 21 round mag and fired in 3 round bursts. It took about 2 mags to down a basic AR enemy, and it only carried 9 or 10 mags.
It looks horrible. Graphically it's not that bad, looks like a console port and seems to run pretty well, but it's easy to get lost because everything looks the same. Everything is grey and green so far, and the environments are claustrophobic. Things have glowing bright weak spots, but since it's impossible to flank them you just fire bursts, missing 1-2 of the 3 rounds due to recoil, into their head or center mass. You can upgrade weapons and it seems to do nothing but flat damage bonuses. There seem to be two ranged weapon scaling schemes. One is called "Common weapon scaling" and the other "Special weapon scaling". The AR I got had 35% of each. A state gave a percentage for each. Does that mean I get 35% of the 20% bonus I get from the stat? I don't know.
Also there's estus flask clones but they take a long time to use (with a stat reducing the time I think), and you also get a grenade that is refilled on bonfires. I literally can't remember the game's name for bonfires, but they're bonfires. The AR is literally an AR-15 with a silly looking thing glued to the top of it and green spraypaint, which made me laugh since the aesthetic is comical space fantasy. The first boss was more bullet spongey than usual and took me 6-8 tries because the timing of dodges felt very strange. He would charge me and if you waited until he was close he'd catch you somehow, but if you dodged as soon as he started charging you'd get away, sort of the opposite of dark souls. There are alternate fire modes for weapons that seem to be assigned randomly because a pistol caused me to spit freezing gas at dudes, an AR just fired a 6 round burst that did double damage, and a shotgun fired a grenade.
There's my stream of consciousness for the first hour or so. I may play some tomorrow. The combat is miles ahead of Elex, but it's still pretty bad.

You only had 2-3 seconds tops after dodging, a lot of which would be taken up by the animation, to hit the glowing spot. I never even got a full burst to hit it. Since he took so long between charges I just mag dumped him as much as possible. I would do like 6 damage with a normal hit and like 40 with a weak spot hit, so a mag would do more damage than a cycle of dodging and weak spots.

The weak points are hard to get at because instead of moving normally enemies will literally pivot towards to face you. If you can't cope with that you can try to lower their stamina bar to try and stun them to get behind, but the window of opportunity even then is ridiculously small. Its like the developer saw elements of Dark souls and Nioh along with GoW-clone shooters and tried to reproduce them without really understanding the true depth of how those games work with what they have.
I was also suprised with how much your initial class-choice matters. It determines what your melee weapon will be, what your armor will look like, since "armor" in this game are just defensive buffs that progressively put more layers of armor on your character, and what gun you get in the first level. Besides raising your statistics and finding consumables, you have to upgrade your weapon quality and find passive bonuses from "shrines" in the world so exploration is a must, which wouldn't be so bad if everything didn't look so samey and just a clusterfuck of geometry laid over itself to make it look like a cohesive level.

I went with the high agility class (forgot its name), with starting SMG and pistol. Easy to dodge this way, and the guns were accurate enough to put a burst, but he gets back up fast.
It didn't feel like there was a use in reducing his stamina bar, it needed to much ammo imo, Tried it a bit too much, and I was down to my last pistol mag when I finally got him.
The combat is really bad, I'd say. It's like they really wanted to make a Dark Souls with guns, but the guns can't reach 40 meters, shoot the ceiling when you fire more than 3 bullets, but don't do damage that justifies this much recoil, stunning/disarming/dismembering the enemy felt useless and ammo consuming because they were already on the brink of death when it ever happens, it just feels tedious overall, it needs to have more oompf and to not let most of the gameplay mechanics go to waste.

On paper it sounds promising, but I can't get my head around how it should play. A gameplay like Dark Souls feels too slow in my opinion for a shooter, as demonstrated in Immortal, but if we get it any faster, how should we go with the dodging mechanic to not make it impossible to follow the action, but also make it feel satisfying and important so it's not down to hugging walls all the time to not get peppered? Should we just play it like Max Payne and put dives and bullet time? Go crazy and put wall runs on it like Total Overdose? I just don't know, I'm not good at this.

The idea that I have is that it's you vs shit that can tank bullets, monsters, mechs, you name it. The big cornerstone should be the movement and how the fights go. In my opinion it should be deliberate, but not slow. Your character should be able to go from one position to another quickly and without much hassle or scripting, like a lot of cover based TPSs, from lunging into a dive into rolling into a crouch into jumping, vaulting over ledges, etc. The whole ordeal should be similar to a dance where you're simultaneously attacking and dodging, and enemies and bosses should be similar to Ys where you're being constantly bombarded by attacks and the way to go should be finding a way to disengage( which would require excellent level design that allows for multiple routes) or finding an opening.
I don't know, I guess the whole idea of a TPS with loot, equipment, stats, classes and so on interests me since so little in the TPS category does anymore.

I envision it as an extremely detailed, tactical shooter with the basic gameplay similar to Tarkov or Insurgency, except in a fantasy world. Maybe a GATE scenario, except there's only one guy. Enemies pretty much don't have guns, but they do have magic and primitive ranged weapons.
An example of how this would work would be something like creeping through some ruins and seeing a mage guarded by two golems and a knight. The golems basically ignore bullets, the mage will likely die to one shot if you catch him off-guard, but can probably raise a shield if you miss, and the knight can tank a few hits. Choosing when to engage them and in what order would be the main source of depth here.
I don't really think that RPG style guns (so bullet spongey enemies and one gun doing 40 times the damage of another) could really work that well.

The method of attacking is different if you're used to melee in soul like games, but there's still melee, but melee is almost used for bringing down an enemy's stamina or saving ammo, as it's weak leaves you vulnerable as you're attacking, with guns on the other hand there's no recovery frames to worry about and you're limited to ammo and reloading, aiming reduces your movement speed despite the fact you can lock onto enemies and shoot from the hip. The guns do not feel satisfying on tankier enemies as they deal weak damage unless you are mag-dumping with an automatic shotgun or shooting weak spots. The games does provide a tip that shooting the legs can stumble an enemy more likely, so free aim has some use and lock-on aim isn't the go to method of killing enemies.
The movement in this game is very slow and sprinting levitates that a tiny bit, however rolling and dashing is fast and snappy. You can always roll when you're not locked onto an enemy, if you're locked onto an enemy or aim with your gun, your side rolls become sidesteps which does not cover as much distance but takes less frames to get out of way and back to shooting.
Some of the enemies or bosses can be annoying, until you solve it they become easy to manipulate, for example: the second area of the game introduces these suicide enemies that emit gas if not killed, if you're a fucking pussy you would lure them and make them suicide leap and wait for hours for the gas to go away, if you run forward you ignore waiting as they dont lock on towards you and leap. None of the bosses or enemies can spin around fast towards you like dark souls 2 when attacking, that is nice. But I have to say, introducing a new trap in a boss encounter is NOT OK and was completely confusing until I figured out it was skeletons grabbing me from below. The only exception was a boss that can be cheesed hilariously with a sniper rifle.
The weapon variety is generic but there are primary weapons and secondary weapons (I think later in the game you can get two primary weapon slots and two secondary weapon slots, you start out with one primary and one secondary weapon slot).
Your submachine gun is best saved for critting enemies/bosses, shotguns can be automatic shotguns and i have seen a pump shotgun yet, rifles are the most boring weapons, you can get a grenade launcher. Handguns can be swapped to a lot faster than a shotgun or a submachine gun. Sniper rifles can deal a lot of damage, accurate but they're not too accurate, they can one-shot enemies but larger enemies, you have to hit the glowing weakspot or hit headshots. All of these weapons have an alternative fire that might spit out acid, or shoot an explosive projectiles or my favorite being able to dump the entire magazine in one go, that one is great against bosses.
The weapon loot-system almost reminds me of borderlands but there's no heavy amount of randomness in terms of drops, it seems like there's fixed amount of weapons with different rarity between weapons. You can also upgrade weapons to increase only their damage but I don't see the point of upgrading common weapons when you could find chests of more rare weapons, unless you're having a trouble with a boss.
There's no armor to equip but there's I think it's suppose to be items that can dye your model's armor, but you get "armor upgrades" that range from more ammo, more weapon slots, less damage taken, etc.
What could have been good graphics is soiled by a high amount of post-processing/filters, the game is in love with the fog, unnecessary bloom, unnatural color correction, overuse of cool colors and lack of contrast in general. This really hurts the game as there's caverns with water over the ground, but sometimes there's a cliff and you need to be almost close to your death, forcing you to not sprint because of the shit amount of distance to reveal its a fucking pit of water and there's fog and the water all looks the fucking same while also being dark in colour, fucking indie devs.
I have to agree with another anon and rightfully say that the concept is interesting but the execution is not the best but if you're really looking into dark souls but in SPACE, this game would be fucking epic for you.

People are saying the gameplay is stiff. I don't think it's THAT stiff. The movement/animation is smooth enough for you to dodge bullets and the shooting feels fine, guns could do with a bit more "oomph". Fighting against more than 2 enemies at a time can get pretty crazy, maybe I'm underleveled for the area I am atm because everything does so much damage to me holy shit.
It's a neat Souls like, I'm liking it a lot more than The Surge. It's challenging, it's decently fast paced and the setting is cool. I'm glad I bothered pirating, so far.

Just gotta keep in mind that the game is supposed to be played using guns, hugging/staying too close to some of the enemies can be pretty bad. I kept going for melee hits whenever I could but they are so slow and consume so much stamina that they are only good for finishing enemies with low health.

You can get an aspect that increases your damage in close range and melee damage, a gun with a bayonet to increase your initial swing's damage.
Melee is bad compared to not using guns because you can't fine aim your swing to deal more damage, reloading your weapons is in many cases faster than recovering your stamina.

This game is trash, and let me tell you why in detail.
It starts with the character design. I can overlook that by itself, but it's the first strike here. Both male and ESPECIALLY female characters seem made to be deliberately ugly, and customization is limited to a degree that you can't even hide it. Minor complaint overall, but the first thing to notice.
The second is the story. It's fucking dull. This might well be the first game I've ever played where even I have struggled to even pay attention to the expodump. Some undead menace is destroying the universe and you are a badguy hero set loose to fix it and I don't fucking care. It's probably more in the delivery than the story itself, but it sucks.
Easily the worst part of course is the gameplay. It's an extremely slow shooter CLEARLY developed for consoles. I don't really care that its slow, unlike most people here I enjoy a slow paced game, but the shooting is just ass from both sides. It technically works, but all I can say is it feels like shit and the console influence shows. Also because this is Dark Souls the TPS, there's a lock on button, that's all I gotta say.
Level design is so bad I could probably break it into two points. First, it's visually indistinct. Navigating is a chore because it's impossible to see where you're going, where you've been and even what the fucking doors look like. The hazard design is even worse. I hope you enjoy practically invisible, completely undodgable traps. You can avoid them if you see them, but unlike Dark Souls there's no getting out of the way once you hear the "click". Very trial and error. Most of them aren't instant-kill but they will if your health is low.
Enemy design is worse than The Surge. I didn't personally think The Surge was that bad on this front, but it was a common complaint. This game lacks anything equivalent to the non-bipedal mechanical enemies. It's all dude with gun and/or dude with armor/melee. Maybe there's something to change it up late game, but this seems like a thematic choice.

You've clearly never played Megaman Legends. It works here as an alternative to free-aiming, which has its own advantages, and to let you focus on dodging. Every other criticism is fair, especially about the lack of customization which is vital in this sort of genre and the female characters look like the males with a few body part ratio adjustments and a chestwrap.
