Welcome to the /v/ Fortress!

In this thread, we will attempt a community-run game of Dwarf Fortress. ""NO KNOWLEDGE OF DF IS REQUIRED. ALL ARE WELCOME TO PARTICIPATE.""

Dwarf Fortress is an ascii strategy sandbox where you struggle to manage a colony of dwarves. Its level of depth is unrivaled, the things you can do in this game are endless.

As the host, I am not allowed to make any major decisions for the fort myself, and instead must take decisions from /v/. I will do all the boring parts [labor, most production, minutiae of fortress management], then post updates to the thread in the form of screenshots and detailed descriptions. Then you guys will put forth ideas and vote on what happens next. I'll be using Strawpoll for this, but feel free to offer alternatives so we can smooth out the process.

Our fortress's name is ""Ugog Ziril Locun"", in english that's ""Bane the Fire of Rising"".

We're embarking upon a nice little spot near a river, directly bordering to a human town but also somewhat near to a necromancer tower, and reachable by goblins and elves as well.

This little spot is rich in minerals and peaceful. For now.

Sort of. You can't close the walls per se but there are retracting spear-traps that can impale you from the floor and walls, and you can always build a drawbridge that closes and literally erases whatever's underneath from existence forever [DF players call this "atom smashing".]

Forts usually only last a few ingame years unless you play it really smart, which we most certainly won't. We're in a savage biome teeming with large creatures, neighbors with goblins, we're directly bordering a human town that will surely be a military target, in range of a necromancer tower, and we will probably instigate a fight with the elves. On top of that, randomized megabeasts can come along and fuck your shit up anytime.

In short, it's us versus the world. Our only allies will probably be the nearby human town.

We have landed.

We're on the side of a steep hill, with the river on the north of the map. Ponds and dense forestry cover the landscape.

Our first order of business is digging out some rooms. I'm going to dig out a meeting hall, farms, and storage areas. Once that's done, we can start digging down and getting stone, and other valuable stuff. Any other ideas for rooms? Should we go to the effort of giving dorfs beds or do they just sleep on the fucking floor?

Also once the fortress is somewhat established, I think some time needs to be devoted towards constructing a proper dwarven daycare. Childcare is very important for the long-term health and stability of dwarven society.

If you want a straight vertical tower with a fully walkable interior floor per z-level, it's not so bad. Just build the interior floors, then the wall corners, then the wall edges.

Building a giant statue / obelisk / penis still sucks though, you have to build and demolish all the exterior scaffolding floors for each z-level.

Sounds good, Overseer. Regarding thee tower, my only word of advise would be, don't make it too wide or each floor will take forever. The top floors can always be wider if needed (especially since that'll make it look more phallic in Armok Vision). 6x6 per floor including walls is probably more than enough for the spire, but that's just my personal thoughts on the matter.

By the way, what animals so we have? Any war beasts?

turns out the place I was gonna put the farm isn't soil so we had to dig a side room next to the stockpiles. Updated floor plan here.

Anyway, now that our living situation is fully squared away [for the most part] what is our next objective? Keep in mind, grand plans start small. Elf slavery starts with cage traps and a trade depot. Fort defense starts with metalsmithing, making weapons and such. A tower starts with a large population and lots of raw material.

I propose we dig a channel from the river to get drinking water in the fort. We could also pump that water up, and create a system wherein we flood any rooms where problems arise. That way if something dangerous escapes our containment, we can just drown that wing of the fortress. Potentially dangerous but useful.

I believe this version of DF also supports sending squads out on expeditions, so we can create a special forces group to rival the likes of Foxhound, and send them to kill goblins and kidnap elf children.

God I wish it worked like that. Instead they just go insane, die and now their corpse spreads the trauma like a disease. Plus you missed the point of suicide squad. They don't get jackshit for good gear or training we just chuck their asses out first so they get targeted instead of the actual military, literal meatshields whose only purpose is to die exhausting the enemy.
