Character's class is a mix between two modes, tank mode, a melee character whose high defense and attack power comes at the expense of speed and attack rate, with a focus on healing allies and incapacitating his enemies, and dps mode, a ranged character who is the exact opposite, and who heals themselves by penetrating enemies with rapid fire projectiles and life-draining aura, depending on how much health the character has, they can be completely one or the other, an equal mix of the two, or a mix that is more to one side than the other, the closer they are to one of the ends of the spectrum, the more effective the traits of the associated mode will become, the opposite is also true, the further away from a given end of the spectrum, the less effective the traits of the associated mode will become.
tank mode (health 100%):
+ High resistance and defense (attacks do less damage and negative status effects are less effective on you, at 100% resistance, you are immune)
- Low speed and evasion (move slowly, low chance to avoid attacks)
+ High damage per hit (high strength, you do a lot of damage)
- Low damage per second (low attack rate, you attack slowly, duh)
+ Wide range attacks hit all enemies around tank within melee distance, knocks enemies back and immobilizes them, while also increasing damage they receive from all sources, stun length extends and weakening stacks with additional hits to stunned enemies
- Short range attacks require being within melee distance of enemies to hit
+/- Produces passive aura effect that drains tank's health to heal all allies while buffing them in all stats, effect is automatic, health only drains when healing allies, allies with full health will not be healed, but will receive the buffs at no cost to the tank's health
Possessed (0% health):
+ High speed and evasion
- Low resistance and defense
+ High damage per second
- Low damage per hit
+ Attacks in straight line with infinite range, penetrates multiple enemies (but not walls) and causes continuous tick damage lasting until death, which also healing the dps by all enemy health lost in this way, damage and life drain is reduced by half for every enemy previously penetrated by the projectile, but the life drain effect stacks upon itself for enemies hit multiple times.
- Attacks are pinpoint rather than wide, requiring accuracy to hit enemies with them, actually, given the rapid fire nature of the ranged attack, you can still afford to spam it, and spray n' pray the enemies away.
+/- produces aura that drains health from enemies and uses it to heal the dps, while also debuffing enemies in all stats, projectile moves more slowly through the aura, causing it to become able to hit an enemy within the aura multiple times, with each hit being reduced by half, and also making it harder to aim, but since you are spamming your rapid fire attacks, you really don't need to aim anyway.
playstyle:
unless you are at full health, or on the verge of dying, you will have the effects of both the tank and the dps modes active at the same time, you will knock away and stun enemies who get up close to you, while launching ranged attacks that penetrate enemies and steal you their health, meanwhile your aura will drain your health to heal allies, while draining the health of enemies to heal you, buffing all the stats of your allies while crippling those of your enemies, if you are at 50% health, both characteristics of the paladin and the demon will be 50% of their maximum effectiveness, and the stats balance out completely, leaving the character as a versatile jack-of-all-trades.
With the right items and abilities, including those unique to the character, their playstyle can change dramatically, opening up a wide variety of roles for them to play among a team of dungeon crawlers.

While I prefer warrior, I like playing a wizard or rogue as well. While there are deviations like archers, healers, different kinds of mages, tanky warriors, speed and damage warriors I really don't like mixing and maxing different classes and coming up with some Frankenstein, jack of many trades, Swiss army knife of a character that plays inconsistently and lacks a focus. I'm not opposed to making up new classes, I just really rather not play them.

PvP components kill balance. As for PvE, developers don't want to give the advantages to the magic class/classes. They want all classes to be equally viable and fun so gimp magic. Either say fuck it to balancing in a single player game or perhaps make the magic classes a much steeper hill to climb to master the skills. Similar to a real mage, having to study and train endlessly until they are proficient enough in magic.
I'd still love a game like Dragon's Dogma that does even more for magic users.

Dragon's Dogma is a good example because it has two mage hybrids that work well in balancing their dual natures. If everyone is a mage of some sort its easier to make sure every class is sufficiently empowered rather than making mages gimped. DA:O had good mages but they get alot of power choices which allows you to get stupid OP and be better at everything, but if it were the "only class" with even more choices it would have been an entirely different creature.

OP here, bu "aura", I'm obviously talking about some generic field around the character, which affects everything within it, imagine lucio's passive field, I mean to say nothing about the range of the field.
projectiles have two attributes, impact, and life drain, both are halved each time they are applied to an enemy, but life drain can stack upon an enemy unlimited times, i tend rate of fire of projectiles to be really high, and their range to be really far, so high that the damage done by the projectiles could be low and their movement speed could also be low, but the attack can still be devastating to the enemy, especially with the accumulating and permanent life drain effects.
also remember that the character will also have additional life drain on enemies within their radius of effect ("aura"), and they get hit multiple times per projectile, applying the life bleed over and over again, albeit halving each time, the purpose is to create a constant fount of health to the character from life drain at all times, which is important since your field drains your life to heal your team.
at the same time, the character has a melee attack going which, while at a much lower rate of attack, has a much higher level of damage, simultaneously attacks all enemies around them within melee range, including those behind them, knocks them back, and stuns them, with stun length capable of stacking upon the same enemy an infinite amount of times, this is time spent in the radius where their lives are getting drained, they are weaker in everything statwise, including the aspect of them taking more damage from all sources, and they will spend that time as prisoners in their own bodies, able to do fuck all to help themselves.
melee and range attacks are activated by pressing or holding down the attack button, so you don't need to worry about using one of the other, you always use both, finally, the field enhances your allies and weakens your enemies in all areas for as long at they stay within it, since you will be fighting as a part of a team, and your projectiles pass through allies without doing anything to them or to your projectiles, as does your melee attacks, you are intended top be a support character in team vs mass mobs of enemies (lots at once, think zombie hordes, but monsters generically).
Remember that they aren't fighting alone, also remember that items and upgrades can greatly alter this character, allowing them to do things like, say, have melee attacks that temporarily make enemies into allies instead of stunning them, and only apply damage once the charm period ends, a period that can be extended by hitting them with melee again, the damage from which will also be delayed until the end of the charm duration, and stacked upon other delayed melee hits, it does not make them immune to your projectile attacks or the attacks of your allies, though.
but since you seem concerned with the projectiles, here's some ideas for possible mods for them: how about an alteration to your projectile that no longer penetrates enemies, but instead fires a ring of projectiles out of an enemy on impact, each of which has only been halved once, and each of which does the same thing with the enemy they hit as well, ad infinitum?, or projectiles that are homing, and seek out the next closest enemy on penetration, or projectiles that apply a slow to en enemy on impact, slows which can stack enough to reduce even the fastest of them to a crawl with enough hits.
and on top of the single alterations from items and upgrades, you can mix multiple alterations together for really crazy shit (remember, you are fighting hordes with a team, you need to get really crazy to do anything).

If you want to ramp up all the classes, Mages gotta mage, Warriors do Guts level feats and have huge speed with great endurance, and theives are just really, REALLY good at sneaking, misdirection and sniping from long range.
Don't need to add magic to make a badass. They just need to be good, even if you have to exaggerate beyond known reality. Mages can break the game because they have shitloads of tools, but warriors and rouges are just really, really, REALLY good at honorable and dishonerable combat and skills.
A Warrior might be a blacksmith and good with people, a Rouge might be a good fletcher and lockpicker, and a mage might only know about magic and not much else. The only weakness you should give a mage is that he SUCKS at something the others excel at. He might be clumsy or not have very good stamina.
