Here's a thought. Make a game of almost any genre where you are controlling a characer on foot (top-down, fps, tps, action-adventure platformer, etc) and have notes spread about that give more exposition to the story and as you read each note or skip some the character's opinions can sometimes be changed and even outright change the direction of the plot/narrative.

But wait! Let's not stop there. Let's have reference keyframes for how far you scroll down each note and if you don't scroll all the way down the character might change their mind about something but if you had scrolled down fully it would outright drive them to a specific action!

Since games are a unique interactive medium story is a part of it so maybe you can make today's games more bearable by adding in something like this. Also it shouldn't be in your face like 'LOOK AT THIS FEATURE' nor should the game be built solely around it. It should just be a noticeable extra.

If the game is well designed the note should change your opinion, not your character's opinion.

I'm trying to be realistic here anon. You and I know that mainstream devs don't care about player driven experiences anymore. Or have you forgotten most 'gamers' think like pic related

> change the direction of the plot midgame

Will never happen in a pre-scripted game. Why do you think none of your choices actually matter in The Walking Dead interactive movies? The developers create one script which you can only barely deviate from, and put all their work into that script. If you could fork the plot near the beginning of the game, the developers would need two create two entirely separate "campaigns", and that's only for a single choice. Creating an entire "tree" of different routes for the player to take in the plot would require a tremendous amount of work. The closest game to what you're sperging out trying to describe would be the different ending mechanics in Silent Hill 2, but that only affects the ending, not the route to it. The reason why a single choice can drastically alter the plot in VNs is because they require nothing more than one dedicated writer to create various routes in the story– you don't need an entire development team to create that.
